Deuteronomy — Chapter 18

1The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance.
2Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
3And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.
4The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.
5For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
6And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose;
7Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
8They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.
9When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.
14For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
15The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
16According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
17And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
18I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
19And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
20But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
1The priests the Levites, [even] all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of Jehovah made by fire, and his inheritance.
2And they shall have no inheritance among their brethren: Jehovah is their inheritance, as he hath spoken unto them.
3And this shall be the priests` due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep, that they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.
4The first-fruits of thy grain, of thy new wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.
5For Jehovah thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of Jehovah, him and his sons for ever.
6And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourneth, and come with all the desire of his soul unto the place which Jehovah shall choose;
7then he shall minister in the name of Jehovah his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, who stand there before Jehovah.
8They shall have like portions to eat, besides that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.
9When thou art come into the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10There shall not be found with thee any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one that useth divination, one that practiseth augury, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer,
11or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12For whosoever doeth these things is an abomination unto Jehovah: and because of these abominations Jehovah thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13Thou shalt be perfect with Jehovah thy God.
14For these nations, that thou shalt dispossess, hearken unto them that practise augury, and unto diviners; but as for thee, Jehovah thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
15Jehovah thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
16according to all that thou desiredst of Jehovah thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of Jehovah my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
17And Jehovah said unto me, They have well said that which they have spoken.
18I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
19And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
20But the prophet, that shall speak a word presumptuously in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.
21And if thou say in thy heart, How shall we know the word which Jehovah hath not spoken?
22when a prophet speaketh in the name of Jehovah, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which Jehovah hath not spoken: the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously, thou shalt not be afraid of him.
1The Levitical priests—indeed, the entire tribe of Levi—will have no allotment or inheritance with Israel; they may eat the burnt offerings of the Lord and of his inheritance.
2They will have no inheritance in the midst of their fellow Israelites; the Lord alone is their inheritance, just as he had told them.
3This shall be the priests’ fair allotment from the people who offer sacrifices, whether bull or sheep—they must give to the priest the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach.
4You must give them the best of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, as well as the best of your wool when you shear your flocks.
5For the Lord your God has chosen them and their sons from all your tribes to stand and serve in his name permanently.
6Suppose a Levite comes by his own free will from one of your villages, from any part of Israel where he is living, to the place the Lord chooses
7and serves in the name of the Lord his God like his fellow Levites who stand there before the Lord.
8He must eat the same share they do, despite any profits he may gain from the sale of his family’s inheritance.
9When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must not learn the abhorrent practices of those nations.
10There must never be found among you anyone who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, anyone who practices divination, an omen reader, a soothsayer, a sorcerer,
11one who casts spells, one who conjures up spirits, a practitioner of the occult, or a necromancer.
12Whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord, and because of these detestable things the Lord your God is about to drive them out from before you.
13You must be blameless before the Lord your God.
14Those nations that you are about to dispossess listen to omen readers and diviners, but the Lord your God has not given you permission to do such things.
15The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you—from your fellow Israelites; you must listen to him.
16This accords with what happened at Horeb in the day of the assembly. You asked the Lord your God: “Please do not make us hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore or see this great fire anymore lest we die.”
17The Lord then said to me, “What they have said is good.
18I will raise up a prophet like you for them from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth and he will speak to them whatever I command.
19I will personally hold responsible anyone who then pays no attention to the words that prophet speaks in my name.
20“But if any prophet presumes to speak anything in my name that I have not authorized him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die.
21Now if you say to yourselves, ‘How can we tell that a message is not from the Lord?’—
22whenever a prophet speaks in my name and the prediction is not fulfilled, then I have not spoken it; the prophet has presumed to speak it, so you need not fear him.”
1The priests the Levites, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion nor inheritance with Israel. They shall eat the offerings of Yahweh made by fire and his portion.
2They shall have no inheritance among their brothers. Yahweh is their inheritance, as he has spoken to them.
3This shall be the priests’ due from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep, that they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the inner parts.
4The first fruits of your grain, of your new wine, and of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep, you shall give him.
5For Yahweh your God has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand to minister in Yahweh’s name, him and his sons for ever.
6If a Levite comes from any of your gates out of all Israel, where he lives as a foreigner, and comes with all the desire of his soul to the place which Yahweh shall choose;
7then he shall minister in the name of Yahweh his God, as all his brothers the Levites do, who stand there before Yahweh.
8They shall have like portions to eat, in addition to that which comes from the sale of his family possessions.
9When you have come into the land which Yahweh your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the abominations of those nations.
10There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer,
11or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh. Because of these abominations, Yahweh your God drives them out from before you.
13You shall be perfect with Yahweh your God.
14For these nations that you shall dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery and to diviners; but as for you, Yahweh your God has not allowed you so to do.
15Yahweh your God will raise up to you a prophet from among you, of your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him.
16This is according to all that you desired of Yahweh your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, “Let me not hear again Yahweh my God’s voice, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I not die.”
17Yahweh said to me, “They have well said that which they have spoken.
18I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you. I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.
19It shall happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
20But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.”
21You may say in your heart, “How shall we know the word which Yahweh has not spoken?”
22When a prophet speaks in Yahweh’s name, if the thing doesn’t follow, nor happen, that is the thing which Yahweh has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You shall not be afraid of him.
Summary
God provides for the Levites, forbids occult practices, and promises a Prophet like Moses whom Israel must hear — ultimately fulfilled in Christ.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Moses speaks from the plains of Moab. The Levites "shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel" (v.1) — they are scattered throughout the land in 48 cities (cf. Numbers 35).
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik identifies the Prophet of v.15 as ultimately fulfilled in Christ, noting that while there were intermediate prophets (Joshua, Samuel, Elijah, etc.), none was "like Moses" until Jesus — who was a mediator, lawgiver, deliverer, and spoke face-to-face with God. He emphasizes that the occult prohibition is absolute: Israel's alternative to divination is not ignorance but divine revelation through the Prophet.
- Charles Spurgeon: "'I will raise them up a Prophet like unto thee.' Here is the great promise of Christ in the Old Testament. Moses was the mediator of the old covenant; Christ is the mediator of the new. Moses spoke God's words to the people; Christ IS the Word of God to the people. Moses delivered from Egypt; Christ delivers from sin. Moses was faithful in God's house as a servant; Christ is faithful as the Son over His own house (Hebrews 3:5-6). Every prophet pointed forward to this Prophet — the final, complete, perfect revelation of God to man."
Reflection
- 1. "The LORD is their inheritance" (v.2). The Levites had no land because they had God Himself. This is the highest privilege, not a deprivation. Under the new covenant, every believer can say: "The LORD is my portion" (Lamentations 3:24). God Himself is better than any earthly inheritance.
- 2. The comprehensive occult prohibition (vv.10-11). Nine categories cover every possible form of supernatural consultation outside of God. This includes modern equivalents: horoscopes, tarot cards, psychics, séances, Ouija boards, and any attempt to access spiritual knowledge apart from God's word. The prohibition is absolute — not "be careful" but "there shall not be found among you."
- 3. "Because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out" (v.12). Occult practices are not harmless curiosity — they are the reason God judges nations. What destroyed the Canaanites will destroy anyone who practices these things. God's patience has limits.
- 4. The Prophet like Moses (vv.15-18). Israel's alternative to the occult is not ignorance but revelation. God does not leave His people without guidance — He sends His Prophet. In Christ, we have the final, complete word from God (Hebrews 1:1-2). We need no other source of spiritual knowledge.
- 5. "I will require it of him" (v.19). Rejecting Christ is not neutral — it brings God's judgment. The Prophet speaks God's words; refusing to listen is refusing God Himself. This is the most serious warning in Scripture: "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:3).
- 6. Two tests of a prophet: (1) Does his message lead to God? (chapter 13); (2) Does his prediction come true? (v.22). Both must be satisfied. A prophet whose signs come true but whose message leads astray is false (13:1-3). A prophet whose message sounds right but whose predictions fail is also false (18:22). Truth and fulfillment together.
