23And thou shalt make a table of acacia wood: two cubits [shall be] the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.

39Of a talent of pure gold shall it be made, with all these vessels.

40And see that thou make them after their pattern, which hath been showed thee in the mount.

1The Lord spoke to Moses,

2“Tell the Israelites to take an offering for me; from every person motivated by a willing heart you are to receive my offering.

3This is the offering you are to accept from them: gold, silver, bronze,

4blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats’ hair,

5ram skins dyed red, fine leather, acacia wood,

6oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for fragrant incense,

7onyx stones, and other gems to be set in the ephod and in the breastpiece.

8Let them make for me a sanctuary, so that I may live among them.

9According to all that I am showing you—the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings—you must make it exactly so.

10“They are to make an ark of acacia wood—its length is to be 45 inches, its width 27 inches, and its height 27 inches.

11You are to overlay it with pure gold—both inside and outside you must overlay it, and you are to make a surrounding border of gold over it.

12You are to cast four gold rings for it and put them on its four feet, with two rings on one side and two rings on the other side.

13You are to make poles of acacia wood, overlay them with gold,

14and put the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark in order to carry the ark with them.

15The poles must remain in the rings of the ark; they must not be removed from it.

16You are to put into the ark the testimony that I will give to you.

17“You are to make an atonement lid of pure gold; its length is to be 45 inches, and its width is to be 27 inches.

18You are to make two cherubim of gold; you are to make them of hammered metal on the two ends of the atonement lid.

19Make one cherub on one end and one cherub on the other end; from the atonement lid you are to make the cherubim on the two ends.

20The cherubim are to be spreading their wings upward, overshadowing the atonement lid with their wings, and the cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the atonement lid.

21You are to put the atonement lid on top of the ark, and in the ark you are to put the testimony I am giving you.

22I will meet with you there, and from above the atonement lid, from between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will command you for the Israelites.

23“You are to make a table of acacia wood; its length is to be 36 inches, its width 18 inches, and its height 27 inches.

24You are to overlay it with pure gold, and you are to make a surrounding border of gold for it.

25You are to make a surrounding frame for it about three inches broad, and you are to make a surrounding border of gold for its frame.

26You are to make four rings of gold for it and attach the rings at the four corners where its four legs are.

27The rings are to be close to the frame to provide places for the poles to carry the table.

28You are to make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold, so that the table may be carried with them.

29You are to make its plates, its ladles, its pitchers, and its bowls, to be used in pouring out offerings; you are to make them of pure gold.

30You are to set the Bread of the Presence on the table before me continually.

31“You are to make a lampstand of pure gold. The lampstand is to be made of hammered metal; its base and its shaft, its cups, its buds, and its blossoms are to be from the same piece.

32Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand, three branches of the lampstand from one side of it and three branches of the lampstand from the other side of it.

33Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, and three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on the next branch, and the same for the six branches extending from the lampstand.

34On the lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms,

35with a bud under the first two branches from it, and a bud under the next two branches from it, and a bud under the third two branches from it, according to the six branches that extend from the lampstand.

36Their buds and their branches will be one piece, all of it one hammered piece of pure gold.

37“You are to make its seven lamps and then set its lamps up on it, so that it will give light to the area in front of it.

38Its trimmers and its trays are to be of pure gold.

39About 75 pounds of pure gold is to be used for it and for all these utensils.

40Now be sure to make them according to the pattern you were shown on the mountain.

1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2“Speak to the children of Israel, that they take an offering for me. From everyone whose heart makes him willing you shall take my offering.

3This is the offering which you shall take from them: gold, silver, brass,

4blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats’ hair,

5rams’ skins dyed red, sea cow hides, acacia wood,

6oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense,

7onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate.

8Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.

9According to all that I show you, the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all of its furniture, even so you shall make it.

10“They shall make an ark of acacia wood. Its length shall be two and a half cubits, its width a cubit and a half, and a cubit and a half its height.

11You shall overlay it with pure gold. You shall overlay it inside and outside, and you shall make a gold molding around it.

12You shall cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in its four feet. Two rings shall be on the one side of it, and two rings on the other side of it.

13You shall make poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold.

14You shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry the ark.

15The poles shall be in the rings of the ark. They shall not be taken from it.

16You shall put the testimony which I shall give you into the ark.

17You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold. Two and a half cubits shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its width.

18You shall make two cherubim of hammered gold. You shall make them at the two ends of the mercy seat.

19Make one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end. You shall make the cherubim on its two ends of one piece with the mercy seat.

20The cherubim shall spread out their wings upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces toward one another. The faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat.

21You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I will give you.

22There I will meet with you, and I will tell you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the testimony, all that I command you for the children of Israel.

23“You shall make a table of acacia wood. Two cubits shall be its length, and a cubit its width, and one and a half cubits its height.

24You shall overlay it with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it.

25You shall make a rim of a hand width around it. You shall make a golden molding on its rim around it.

26You shall make four rings of gold for it, and put the rings in the four corners that are on its four feet.

27the rings shall be close to the rim, for places for the poles to carry the table.

28You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be carried with them.

29You shall make its dishes, its spoons, its ladles, and its bowls to pour out offerings with. You shall make them of pure gold.

30You shall set bread of the presence on the table before me always.

31“You shall make a lamp stand of pure gold. Of hammered work shall the lamp stand be made, even its base, its shaft, its cups, its buds, and its flowers, shall be of one piece with it.

32There shall be six branches going out of its sides: three branches of the lamp stand out of its one side, and three branches of the lamp stand out of its other side;

33three cups made like almond blossoms in one branch, a bud and a flower; and three cups made like almond blossoms in the other branch, a bud and a flower, so for the six branches going out of the lamp stand;

34and in the lamp stand four cups made like almond blossoms, its buds and its flowers;

35and a bud under two branches of one piece with it, and a bud under two branches of one piece with it, and a bud under two branches of one piece with it, for the six branches going out of the lamp stand.

Summary

God instructs Moses to receive offerings and build the Tabernacle — the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, and the golden lampstand.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses (see Chapter 1 notes for full authorship details).
Historical Context: Chapter 25 begins the Tabernacle instructions (chapters 25-31) — God's blueprint for His dwelling place among Israel. This is given during Moses' forty days on Sinai. The Tabernacle is not a human invention but a divine design: "according to all that I shew thee, after the pattern" (v.9). God's purpose: "that I may dwell among them" (v.8) — the holy God living in the midst of sinful people. The chapter covers: (1) The offering of materials (vv.1-9); (2) The Ark of the Covenant (vv.10-22); (3) The Table of Showbread (vv.23-30); (4) The Golden Lampstand/Menorah (vv.31-40). Every item points to Christ: the Ark (God's throne of grace), the Table (bread of life), the Lampstand (light of the world).
The Offering (vv.1-9): God calls for a freewill offering — "of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart" (v.2). Materials: gold, silver, bronze, colored yarns, fine linen, animal skins, acacia wood, oil, spices, precious stones (vv.3-7). Purpose: "let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them" (v.8). Instruction: "according to... the pattern" (v.9) — the earthly Tabernacle copies a heavenly reality (Hebrews 8:5).
The Ark of the Covenant (vv.10-22): Acacia wood overlaid with pure gold, inside and out (vv.10-11). Gold rings and poles for carrying (vv.12-15) — poles never removed. Contains "the testimony" — the stone tablets (v.16). The mercy seat: pure gold lid with two cherubim, wings spread, facing each other and looking down at the mercy seat (vv.17-20). God's promise: "There I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat" (v.22). The Ark is God's throne on earth.
The Table of Showbread (vv.23-30): Acacia wood overlaid with gold (vv.23-28). Gold dishes and utensils (v.29). "Thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway" (v.30) — twelve loaves representing the twelve tribes, always in God's presence.
The Golden Lampstand (vv.31-40): Pure gold, hammered from a single piece (v.31). Central shaft with six branches — three on each side (v.32). Almond blossom decorations (vv.33-34). Seven lamps giving light (v.37). Made from one talent of pure gold (v.39). Final instruction: "make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount" (v.40).

Map & Geography

  • Israel remains encamped at Mount Sinai. Moses receives the Tabernacle instructions on the mountain.
  • The Tabernacle is designed as a portable sanctuary — God's dwelling place to travel with Israel through the wilderness.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers each Tabernacle item as a type of Christ, the significance of the mercy seat, and the heavenly pattern that the earthly Tabernacle copies.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Mercy Seat" on v.22 (MTP Vol. 7, No. 390) "There I will MEET with thee — God meets man at the mercy seat. Not at the law (which is INSIDE the ark, under the mercy seat). Not at the cherubim (which represent judgment). But at the MERCY SEAT — the golden lid that covers the law and receives the blood. This is where God and man meet: where mercy covers law, where blood satisfies justice, where grace triumphs over judgment. Christian, you do not approach God at the place of law — you approach at the place of mercy. The blood is between you and the commandments you've broken. Come boldly to the throne of GRACE."

Reflection

  • 1. "That I may dwell among them" (v.8). God's deepest desire is to live WITH His people. The Tabernacle, the Temple, the Incarnation, the indwelling Spirit — all express the same longing. Do you desire His presence as much as He desires yours?
  • 2. "Of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart" (v.2). God wants willing givers, not reluctant ones. Is your giving — of time, money, talent — from a willing heart or from obligation?
  • 3. "There I will meet with thee... from above the mercy seat" (v.22). God meets you at the place of MERCY — not the place of performance. You don't have to be perfect to approach Him. Come to the mercy seat.
  • 4. "Make them after their pattern" (v.40). God's design is specific. He doesn't say "build whatever you think is best." Worship and service must follow God's pattern, not human preference.
  • 5. Every item points to Christ: the Ark (God's presence), the mercy seat (propitiation), the bread (sustenance), the lampstand (light). Jesus is the fulfillment of every shadow. Do you see Him in the details?
