Summary

Bezalel constructs the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and the altar of incense.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses (see Chapter 1 notes for full authorship details).
Historical Context: Exodus 37 records Bezalel's construction of the most sacred furnishings of the tabernacle: the Ark of the Covenant (vv.1–9), the Table of Showbread (vv.10–16), the Golden Lampstand (vv.17–24), and the Altar of Incense (vv.25–28), along with the holy anointing oil and incense (v.29). These are the items that would occupy the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place — the innermost rooms of God's dwelling.
Each piece of furniture carries rich typological significance pointing to Christ. The Ark represents God's throne and the place of atonement; the Table represents God's provision and fellowship; the Lampstand represents God's light and revelation; the Altar of Incense represents prayer and intercession. All are made of gold or gold-overlaid acacia wood — deity (gold) united with humanity (wood), a picture of the incarnation.
Bezalel is named specifically as the maker (v.1), emphasizing that the Spirit-filled craftsman personally constructed the holiest objects. The chapter parallels the instructions in chapters 25 and 30, demonstrating precise obedience. Every measurement, every material, every design element matches God's original specification. There is no human innovation or improvement — only faithful execution of the divine pattern.
Section Summaries: vv.1–5 — The Ark of the Covenant: acacia wood overlaid with gold, with poles. vv.6–9 — The Mercy Seat with two cherubim of hammered gold. vv.10–16 — The Table of Showbread with its vessels. vv.17–24 — The Golden Lampstand of hammered pure gold (one talent). vv.25–28 — The Altar of Incense: acacia wood overlaid with gold. v.29 — The holy anointing oil and pure incense prepared.

Map & Geography

  • Israel remains encamped at Mount Sinai. Bezalel constructs the ark, table, lampstand, and incense altar — the furniture of God's dwelling place.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik traces the typology of each piece: the Ark as God's throne, the Mercy Seat as the place of propitiation, the Table as fellowship, the Lampstand as Christ the Light, and the Incense Altar as prayer.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Mercy Seat" on v.6 (MTP Vol. 7, No. 390) "The mercy seat was of pure gold — nothing but mercy, solid mercy, precious mercy. It was the exact dimensions of the ark beneath it — mercy covers the whole law. The cherubim looked down upon it — angels wonder at mercy. The blood was sprinkled upon it — mercy comes through sacrifice alone. And God spoke from above it — mercy is the throne from which God communicates with sinners. Come boldly to this mercy seat. It was made for you." Sermon: "The Golden Lampstand" on v.17 (MTP Vol. 11, No. 657) "Beaten work — the lampstand was hammered into shape. Christ, our Light, was perfected through suffering. Every blow of the hammer shaped the beauty. And from one piece — there is one Christ, one Light, one Source of all illumination. The branches are not separate; they grow from the central shaft. So we have no light apart from Him."

Reflection

  • 1. The Mercy Seat was the place where God met man through blood atonement (v.6). How does Christ fulfill this picture? How does knowing you have a "mercy seat" in Christ affect your confidence before God?
  • 2. The Lampstand was "beaten work" — shaped through hammering (v.17). Christ, our Light, was perfected through suffering (Heb 2:10). How does suffering shape and refine you? Can you see God's purposes in your trials?
  • 3. The Table of Showbread represented God's continual provision (vv.10-16). How do you experience God as your daily bread? Do you trust Him for today's provision?
  • 4. The Incense Altar represents prayer (vv.25-28). Your prayers rise before God like fragrant incense. How consistent and intentional is your prayer life? Does it ascend "morning and evening" (Ex 30:7-8)?
  • 5. Bezalel followed God's design exactly — no additions, no subtractions. Where are you tempted to "improve" on God's instructions in your life? What does faithful obedience to God's pattern look like for you?
