26And thou shalt make bars
27And five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the two sides westward.
28And the middle bar in the midst of the boards shall reach from end to end.
29And thou shalt overlay the boards with gold, and make their rings
30And thou shalt rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which was shewed thee in the mount.
31And thou shalt make a vail
32And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of shittim
33And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy
34And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy
35And thou shalt set the table without the vail, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side.
36And thou shalt make an hanging for the door of the tent,
37And thou shalt make for the hanging five pillars
1Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim the work of the skilful workman shalt thou make them.
2The length of each curtain shall be eight and twenty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits: all the curtains shall have one measure.
3Five curtains shall be coupled together one to another; and [the other] five curtains shall be coupled one to another.
4And thou shalt make loops of blue upon the edge of the one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling; and likewise shalt thou make in the edge of the curtain that is outmost in the second coupling.
5Fifty loops shalt thou make in the one curtain, and fifty loops shalt thou make in the edge of the curtain that is in the second coupling; the loops shall be opposite one to another.
6And thou shalt make fifty clasps of gold, and couple the curtains one to another with the clasps: and the tabernacle shall be one [whole].
7And thou shalt make curtains of goats` [hair] for a tent over the tabernacle: eleven curtains shalt thou make them.
8The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits: the eleven curtains shall have one measure.
9And thou shalt couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shalt double over the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tent.
10And thou shalt make fifty loops on the edge of the one curtain that is outmost in the coupling, and fifty loops upon the edge of the curtain which is [outmost in] the second coupling.
11And thou shalt make fifty clasps of brass, and put the clasps into the loops, and couple the tent together, that it may be one.
12And the overhanging part that remaineth of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remaineth, shall hang over the back of the tabernacle.
13And the cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, of that which remaineth in the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it.
14And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams` skins dyed red, and a covering of sealskins above.
15And thou shalt make the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, standing up.
16Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and a half the breadth of each board.
17Two tenons shall there be in each board, joined one to another: thus shalt thou make for all the boards of the tabernacle.
18And thou shalt make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards for the south side southward.
19And thou shalt make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under another board for its two tenons.
20And for the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, twenty boards,
21and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
22And for the hinder part of the tabernacle westward thou shalt make six boards.
23And two boards shalt thou make for the corners of the tabernacle in the hinder part.
24And they shall be double beneath, and in like manner they shall be entire unto the top thereof unto one ring: thus shall it be for them both; they shall be for the two corners.
25And there shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
26And thou shalt make bars of acacia wood: five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,
27and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the hinder part westward.
28And the middle bar in the midst of the boards shall pass through from end to end.
29And thou shalt overlay the boards with gold, and make their rings of gold for places for the bars: and thou shalt overlay the bars with gold.
30And thou shalt rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which hath been showed thee in the mount.
31And thou shalt make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: with cherubim the work of the skilful workman shall it be made.
32And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold; their hooks [shall be] of gold, upon four sockets of silver.
33And thou shalt hang up the veil under the clasps, and shalt bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall separate unto you between the holy place and the most holy.
34And thou shalt put the mercy-seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.
35And thou shalt set the table without the veil, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side.
36And thou shalt make a screen for the door of the Tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of the embroiderer.
37And thou shalt make for the screen five pillars of acacia, and overlay them with gold: their hooks shall be of gold: and thou shalt cast five sockets of brass for them.
1“The tabernacle itself you are to make with ten curtains of fine twisted linen and blue and purple and scarlet; you are to make them with cherubim that are the work of an artistic designer.
2The length of each curtain is to be 42 feet, and the width of each curtain is to be 6 feet—the same size for each of the curtains.
3Five curtains are to be joined, one to another, and the other five curtains are to be joined, one to another.
4You are to make loops of blue material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and in the same way you are to make loops in the outer edge of the end curtain in the second set.
5You are to make 50 loops on the one curtain, and you are to make 50 loops on the end curtain which is on the second set, so that the loops are opposite one to another.
6You are to make 50 gold clasps and join the curtains together with the clasps, so that the tabernacle is a unit.
7“You are to make curtains of goats’ hair for a tent over the tabernacle; you are to make 11 curtains.
8The length of each curtain is to be 45 feet, and the width of each curtain is to be 6 feet—the same size for the 11 curtains.
9You are to join five curtains by themselves and six curtains by themselves. You are to double over the sixth curtain at the front of the tent.
10You are to make 50 loops along the edge of the end curtain in one set and 50 loops along the edge of the curtain that joins the second set.
11You are to make 50 bronze clasps and put the clasps into the loops and join the tent together so that it is a unit.
12Now the part that remains of the curtains of the tent—the half curtain that remains will hang over at the back of the tabernacle.
13The foot and a half on the one side and the foot and a half on the other side of what remains in the length of the curtains of the tent will hang over the sides of the tabernacle, on one side and the other side, to cover it.
14“You are to make a covering for the tent out of ram skins dyed red and over that a covering of fine leather.
15“You are to make the frames for the tabernacle out of acacia wood as uprights.
16Each frame is to be 15 feet long, and each frame is to be 27 inches wide,
17with two projections per frame parallel one to another. You are to make all the frames of the tabernacle in this way.
18So you are to make the frames for the tabernacle: 20 frames for the south side,
19and you are to make 40 silver bases to go under the 20 frames—two bases under the first frame for its two projections, and likewise two bases under the next frame for its two projections;
20and for the second side of the tabernacle, the north side, 20 frames,
21and their 40 silver bases, two bases under the first frame, and two bases under the next frame.
22And for the back of the tabernacle on the west you will make six frames.
23You are to make two frames for the corners of the tabernacle on the back.
24At the two corners they must be doubled at the lower end and finished together at the top in one ring. So it will be for both.
25So there are to be eight frames and their silver bases, sixteen bases, two bases under the first frame, and two bases under the next frame.
26“You are to make bars of acacia wood, five for the frames on one side of the tabernacle,
27and five bars for the frames on the second side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the frames on the back of the tabernacle on the west.
28The middle bar in the center of the frames will reach from end to end.
29You are to overlay the frames with gold and make their rings of gold to provide places for the bars, and you are to overlay the bars with gold.
30You are to set up the tabernacle according to the plan that you were shown on the mountain.
31“You are to make a special curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine twisted linen; it is to be made with cherubim, the work of an artistic designer.
32You are to hang it with gold hooks on four posts of acacia wood overlaid with gold, set in four silver bases.
33You are to hang this curtain under the clasps and bring the ark of the testimony in there behind the curtain. The curtain will make a division for you between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place.
34You are to put the atonement lid on the ark of the testimony in the Most Holy Place.
35You are to put the table outside the curtain and the lampstand on the south side of the tabernacle, opposite the table, and you are to place the table on the north side.
36“You are to make a hanging for the entrance of the tent of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine twisted linen, the work of an embroiderer.
37You are to make for the hanging five posts of acacia wood and overlay them with gold, and their hooks will be gold, and you are to cast five bronze bases for them.
1“Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim. The work of the skillful workman you shall make them.
2The length of each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits: all the curtains shall have one measure.
3Five curtains shall be coupled together to one another; and the other five curtains shall be coupled to one another.
4You shall make loops of blue on the edge of the one curtain from the edge in the coupling; and likewise you shall make in the edge of the curtain that is outermost in the second coupling.
5You shall make fifty loops in the one curtain, and you shall make fifty loops in the edge of the curtain that is in the second coupling. The loops shall be opposite one another.
6You shall make fifty clasps of gold, and couple the curtains to one another with the clasps: and the tabernacle shall be a unit.
7“You shall make curtains of goats’ hair for a covering over the tabernacle. You shall make them eleven curtains.
8The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits: the eleven curtains shall have one measure.
9You shall couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shall double over the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tent.
10You shall make fifty loops on the edge of the one curtain that is outermost in the coupling, and fifty loops on the edge of the curtain which is outermost in the second coupling.
11You shall make fifty clasps of brass, and put the clasps into the loops, and couple the tent together, that it may be one.
12The overhanging part that remains of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remains, shall hang over the back of the tabernacle.
13The cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, of that which remains in the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it.
14You shall make a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red, and a covering of sea cow hides above.
15“You shall make the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, standing up.
16Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and one and a half cubits the width of each board.
17There shall be two tenons in each board, joined to one another: thus you shall make for all the boards of the tabernacle.
18You shall make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards for the south side southward.
19You shall make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under another board for its two tenons.
20For the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, twenty boards,
21and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
22For the far part of the tabernacle westward you shall make six boards.
23You shall make two boards for the corners of the tabernacle in the far part.
24They shall be double beneath, and in the same way they shall be whole to its top to one ring: thus shall it be for them both; they shall be for the two corners.
25There shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
26“You shall make bars of acacia wood: five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,
27and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the far part westward.
28The middle bar in the middle of the boards shall pass through from end to end.
29You shall overlay the boards with gold, and make their rings of gold for places for the bars: and you shall overlay the bars with gold.
30You shall set up the tabernacle according to the way that it was shown to you on the mountain.
31“You shall make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cherubim. The work of the skillful workman shall it be made.
32You shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold; their hooks shall be of gold, on four sockets of silver.
33You shall hang up the veil under the clasps, and shall bring the ark of the testimony in there within the veil: and the veil shall separate the holy place from the most holy for you.
34You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.
35You shall set the table outside the veil, and the lamp stand over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and you shall put the table on the north side.
36“You shall make a screen for the door of the Tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of the embroiderer.
37You shall make for the screen five pillars of acacia, and overlay them with gold: their hooks shall be of gold: and you shall cast five sockets of brass for them.
Summary
God gives detailed instructions for the Tabernacle's curtains, frames, and veil — the dwelling place where He will meet with His people.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Israel remains encamped at Mount Sinai. God gives Moses the Tabernacle curtain instructions on the mountain.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers the symbolism of each layer (beauty within, plainness without — like Christ), the veil as separation torn at the cross, and the silver bases as redemption (silver = redemption price).
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Rent Veil" on v.33 (MTP Vol. 34, No. 2015) "The vail shall divide — for centuries, this veil stood between God and man. Thick, heavy, embroidered with cherubim — guardians barring the way. No one passed through except the high priest, once a year, with blood. But when Christ died — 'the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the TOP to the bottom.' From the TOP — God tore it, not man. From heaven downward. God Himself opened the way. The barrier is gone. The separation is ended. 'Having boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way... through the veil, that is to say, his flesh' (Hebrews 10:19-20). Christ's torn flesh IS the torn veil. Enter boldly."
Reflection
- 1. "The vail shall divide" (v.33). Before Christ, a thick curtain separated humanity from God. At the cross, it was torn. You now have direct access to God's presence — through Christ's torn flesh. Do you USE that access? Or do you live as if the veil is still there?
- 2. The outer covering was plain; the beauty was inside (v.14 vs. v.1). Christ had "no beauty that we should desire him" (Isaiah 53:2) outwardly — but inwardly, He was glorious. Don't judge by appearances. The greatest beauty is often hidden from casual observers.
- 3. "It shall be one tabernacle" (v.6). Many parts, one structure. The church is the same: many members, one body. Are you contributing to unity or division?
- 4. The entire structure rests on silver bases — redemption (v.19). Everything in your spiritual life rests on the foundation of grace. You don't earn your standing; you rest on redemption.
- 5. "According to the fashion... shewed thee in the mount" (v.30). God's design is specific. Worship is not "whatever feels right to me" — it follows God's pattern. Are you worshipping God His way or yours?
