1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2On the first day of the first month shalt thou set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.
3And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and cover the ark with the vail.
4And thou shalt bring in the table, and set in order the things that are to be set in order upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof.
5And thou shalt set the altar of gold for the incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the hanging of the door to the tabernacle.
6And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.
7And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and shalt put water therein.
8And thou shalt set up the court round about, and hang up the hanging at the court gate.
9And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that
10And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.
11And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot, and sanctify it.
12And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.
13And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
14And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:
15And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.
16Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.
17And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first
18And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and fastened his sockets, and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up his pillars.
19And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the LORD commanded Moses.
20And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:
21And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the vail of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony; as the LORD commanded Moses.
22And he put the table in the tent of the congregation, upon the side of the tabernacle northward, without the vail.
23And he set the bread in order upon it before the LORD; as the LORD had commanded Moses.
24And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.
25And he lighted the lamps before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
26And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail:
27And he burnt sweet incense thereon; as the LORD commanded Moses.
28And he set up the hanging
29And he put the altar of burnt offering
30And he set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and put water there, to wash
31And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet thereat:
32When they went into the tent of the congregation, and when they came near unto the altar, they washed; as the LORD commanded Moses.
33And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work.
34Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
35And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
36And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys:
37But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.
38For the cloud of the LORD
1And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,
2On the first day of the first month shalt thou rear up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.
3And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and thou shalt screen the ark with the veil.
4And thou shalt bring in the table, and set in order the things that are upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof.
5And thou shalt set the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the screen of the door to the tabernacle.
6And thou shalt set the altar of burnt-offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.
7And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and shalt put water therein.
8And thou shalt set up the court round about, and hang up the screen of the gate of the court.
9And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the furniture thereof: and it shall be holy.
10And thou shalt anoint the altar of burnt-offering, and all its vessels, and sanctify the altar: and the altar shall be most holy.
11And thou shalt anoint the laver and its base, and sanctify it.
12And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tent of meeting, and shalt wash them with water.
13And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments; and thou shalt anoint him, and sanctify him, that he may minister unto me in the priest`s office.
14And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them;
15and thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest`s office: and their anointing shall be to them for an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.
16Thus did Moses: according to all that Jehovah commanded him, so did he.
17And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up.
18And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and laid its sockets, and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up its pillars.
19And he spread the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
20And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy-seat above upon the ark:
21and he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
22And he put the table in the tent of meeting, upon the side of the tabernacle northward, without the veil.
23And he set the bread in order upon it before Jehovah; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
24And he put the candlestick in the tent of meeting, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.
25And he lighted the lamps before Jehovah; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
26And he put the golden altar in the tent of meeting before the veil:
27and he burnt thereon incense of sweet spices; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
28And he put the screen of the door to the tabernacle.
29And he set the altar of burnt-offering at the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered upon it the burnt-offering and the meal-offering; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
30And he set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water therein, wherewith to wash.
31And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet thereat;
32when they went into the tent of meeting, and when they came near unto the altar, they washed; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
33And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So Moses finished the work.
34Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of Jehovah filled the tabernacle.
35And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of meeting, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of Jehovah filled the tabernacle.
36And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys:
37but if the cloud was not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.
38For the cloud of Jehovah was upon the tabernacle by day, and there was fire therein by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
1Then the Lord spoke to Moses:
2“On the first day of the first month you are to set up the tabernacle, the tent of meeting.
3You are to place the ark of the testimony in it and shield the ark with the special curtain.
4You are to bring in the table and set out the things that belong on it; then you are to bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps.
5You are to put the gold altar for incense in front of the ark of the testimony and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.
6You are to put the altar for the burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting.
7You are to put the large basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it.
8You are to set up the courtyard around it and put the curtain at the gate of the courtyard.
9And take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and sanctify it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy.
10Then you are to anoint the altar for the burnt offering with all its utensils; you are to sanctify the altar, and it will be the most holy altar.
11You must also anoint the large basin and its pedestal, and you are to sanctify it.
12“You are to bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and wash them with water.
13Then you are to clothe Aaron with the holy garments and anoint him and sanctify him so that he may minister as my priest.
14You are to bring his sons and clothe them with tunics
15and anoint them just as you anointed their father, so that they may minister as my priests; their anointing will make them a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.”
16This is what Moses did, according to all the Lord had commanded him—so he did.
17So the tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month, in the second year.
18When Moses set up the tabernacle and put its bases in place, he set up its frames, attached its bars, and set up its posts.
19Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it, as the Lord had commanded him.
20He took the testimony and put it in the ark, attached the poles to the ark, and then put the atonement lid on the ark.
21And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, hung the protecting curtain, and shielded the ark of the testimony from view, just as the Lord had commanded him.
22And Moses put the table in the tent of meeting, on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the curtain.
23And he set the bread in order on it before the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded him.
24And he put the lampstand in the tent of meeting opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle.
25Then he set up the lamps before the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded him.
26And he put the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the curtain,
27and he burned fragrant incense on it, just as the Lord had commanded him.
28Then Moses put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.
29He also put the altar for the burnt offering by the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and the meal offering, just as the Lord had commanded him.
30Then he put the large basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing.
31Moses and Aaron and his sons would wash their hands and their feet from it.
32Whenever they entered the tent of meeting, and whenever they approached the altar, they would wash, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
33And he set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and the altar, and put the curtain at the gate of the courtyard. So Moses finished the work.
34Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
35Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
36But when the cloud was lifted up from the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out on all their journeys;
37but if the cloud was not lifted up, then they would not journey farther until the day it was lifted up.
38For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, but fire would be on it at night, in plain view of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.
1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2“On the first day of the first month you shall raise up the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.
3You shall put the ark of the testimony in it, and you shall screen the ark with the veil.
4You shall bring in the table, and set in order the things that are on it. You shall bring in the lamp stand, and light its lamps.
5You shall set the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the screen of the door to the tabernacle.
6“You shall set the altar of burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.
7You shall set the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and shall put water therein.
8You shall set up the court around it, and hang up the screen of the gate of the court.
9“You shall take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is in it, and shall make it holy, and all its furniture: and it will be holy.
10You shall anoint the altar of burnt offering, with all its vessels, and sanctify the altar: and the altar will be most holy.
11You shall anoint the basin and its base, and sanctify it.
12“You shall bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and shall wash them with water.
13You shall put on Aaron the holy garments; and you shall anoint him, and sanctify him, that he may minister to me in the priest’s office.
14You shall bring his sons, and put coats on them.
15You shall anoint them, as you anointed their father, that they may minister to me in the priest’s office. Their anointing shall be to them for an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.”
16Moses did so. According to all that Yahweh commanded him, so he did.
17In the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, the tabernacle was raised up.
18Moses raised up the tabernacle, and laid its sockets, and set up its boards, and put in its bars, and raised up its pillars.
19He spread the covering over the tent, and put the roof of the tabernacle above on it, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
20He took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the poles on the ark, and put the mercy seat above on the ark.
21He brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
22He put the table in the Tent of Meeting, on the side of the tabernacle northward, outside of the veil.
23He set the bread in order on it before Yahweh, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
24He put the lamp stand in the Tent of Meeting, opposite the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.
25He lit the lamps before Yahweh, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
26He put the golden altar in the Tent of Meeting before the veil;
27and he burned incense of sweet spices on it, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
28He put up the screen of the door to the tabernacle.
29He set the altar of burnt offering at the door of the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and the meal offering, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
30He set the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water therein, with which to wash.
31Moses, Aaron, and his sons washed their hands and their feet there.
32When they went into the Tent of Meeting, and when they came near to the altar, they washed, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
33He raised up the court around the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So Moses finished the work.
34Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and Yahweh’s glory filled the tabernacle.
35Moses wasn’t able to enter into the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud stayed on it, and Yahweh’s glory filled the tabernacle.
36When the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys;
37but if the cloud wasn’t taken up, then they didn’t travel until the day that it was taken up.
38For the cloud of Yahweh was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
Summary
Moses assembles the Tabernacle; the glory of the Lord fills it so powerfully that even Moses cannot enter — God now dwells among His people.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Mount Sinai / the camp: The Tabernacle is erected on the first day of the first month of the second year (v.17) — nearly one year after the Exodus.
- The cloud covers the tent; God's glory fills the Tabernacle (vv.34-38). From now on, God's visible presence travels with Israel wherever they go.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that Exodus begins with Israel in bondage and ends with God in their midst. The glory filling the tabernacle is the goal of redemption — not just freedom from slavery but fellowship with God. He connects this to John 1:14 and Revelation 21:3.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Glory of God Filling the Tabernacle" on v.34 (MTP Vol. 10, No. 577) "The glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle! This is what God has been working toward since Eden. He made man for fellowship. Sin drove man out. Redemption brings God back. The tabernacle is God saying, 'I will dwell with you again.' And the glory that filled that tent was but a shadow of the glory that filled the body of Christ, and the glory that shall fill the new creation when God is all in all. Every act of redemption aims at this: God with us, God among us, God in us." Sermon: "The Pillar of Cloud and Fire" on v.38 (MTP Vol. 8, No. 452) "Cloud by day, fire by night — always visible, always present. God does not leave His people to guess. He guides. He protects. He illuminates the darkness. And He never departs. Throughout ALL their journeys — not some, but all. In the wilderness, in the battles, in the waiting — the cloud was there. So is Christ with us, always, even unto the end of the age."
Reflection
- 1. Exodus begins with Israel enslaved and ends with God dwelling among them (v.34). Redemption's goal is not just freedom FROM something but fellowship WITH Someone. Is your Christian life defined more by what you've been saved from or who you've been saved to?
- 2. "So Moses finished the work" (v.33). Faithful completion of God-given tasks matters. What has God called you to that requires perseverance to finish? Are you tempted to leave things incomplete?
- 3. The glory was so overwhelming that Moses could not enter (v.35). Have you ever been overwhelmed by God's presence? Do you create space in your life for encounters with His glory, or do you keep Him at a manageable distance?
- 4. The cloud guided Israel's movements — when it moved, they moved; when it stayed, they stayed (vv.36-37). How sensitive are you to God's leading? Do you move when He moves and wait when He waits? Or do you run ahead or lag behind?
- 5. "Throughout all their journeys" (v.38) — God's presence was constant, not occasional. He was there in the wilderness, not just at the destination. How does God's continual presence comfort you in your current "journey" — especially if you haven't yet reached your "promised land"?
