1Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the LORD had commanded.
2And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom,
3And they received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to make it
4And all the wise men, that wrought all the work of the sanctuary, came every man from his work which they made;
5And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make.
6And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing.
7For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
8And every wise hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains
9The length of one curtain
10And he coupled the five curtains one unto another: and
11And he made loops of blue on the edge of one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling: likewise he made in the uttermost side of
12Fifty loops made he in one curtain, and fifty loops made he in the edge of the curtain which
13And he made fifty taches of gold, and coupled the curtains one unto another with the taches: so it became one tabernacle.
14And he made curtains
15The length of one curtain
16And he coupled five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves.
17And he made fifty loops upon the uttermost edge of the curtain in the coupling, and fifty loops made he upon the edge of the curtain which coupleth the second.
18And he made fifty taches
19And he made a covering for the tent
20And he made boards for the tabernacle
21The length of a board
22One board had two tenons, equally distant one from another: thus did he make for all the boards of the tabernacle.
23And he made boards for the tabernacle; twenty boards for the south side southward:
24And forty sockets of silver he made under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for his two tenons, and two sockets under another board for his two tenons.
25And for the other side of the tabernacle,
26And their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
27And for the sides of the tabernacle westward he made six boards.
28And two boards made he for the corners of the tabernacle in the two sides.
29And they were coupled beneath, and coupled together at the head thereof, to one ring: thus he did to both of them in both the corners.
30And there were eight boards; and their sockets
31And he made bars of shittim wood; five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,
32And five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the tabernacle for the sides westward.
33And he made the middle bar to shoot through the boards from the one end to the other.
34And he overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings
35And he made a vail
36And he made thereunto four pillars
37And he made an hanging for the tabernacle door
38And the five pillars of it with their hooks: and he overlaid their chapiters and their fillets with gold: but their five sockets
1And Bezalel and Oholiab shall work, and every wise-hearted man, in whom Jehovah hath put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all the work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that Jehovah hath commanded.
2And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab, and every wise-hearted man, in whose heart Jehovah had put wisdom, even every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it:
3and they received of Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, wherewith to make it. And they brought yet unto him freewill-offerings every morning.
4And all the wise men, that wrought all the work of the sanctuary, came every man from his work which they wrought.
5And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work which Jehovah commanded to make.
6And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing.
7For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
8And all the wise-hearted men among them that wrought the work made the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim, the work of the skilful workman, [Bezalel] made them.
9The length of each curtain was eight and twenty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits: all the curtains had one measure.
10And he coupled five curtains one to another: and [the other] five curtains he coupled one to another.
11And he made loops of blue upon the edge of the one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling: likewise he made in the edge of the curtain that was outmost in the second coupling.
12Fifty loops made he in the one curtain, and fifty loops made he in the edge of the curtain that was in the second coupling: the loops were opposite one to another.
13And he made fifty clasps of gold, and coupled the curtains one to another with the clasps: so the tabernacle was one.
14And he made curtains of goats` [hair] for a tent over the tabernacle: eleven curtains he made them.
15The length of each curtain was thirty cubits, and four cubits the breadth of each curtain: the eleven curtains had one measure.
16And he coupled five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves.
17And he made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that was outmost in the coupling, and fifty loops made he upon the edge of the curtain which was [outmost in] the second coupling.
18And he made fifty clasps of brass to couple the tent together, that it might be one.
19And he made a covering for the tent of rams` skins dyed red, and a covering of sealskins above.
20And he made the boards for the tabernacle, of acacia wood, standing up.
21Ten cubits was the length of a board, and a cubit and a half the breadth of each board.
22Each board had two tenons, joined one to another: thus did he make for all the boards of the tabernacle.
23And he made the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side southward.
24And he made forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under another board for its two tenons.
25And for the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, he made twenty boards,
26and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
27And for the hinder part of the tabernacle westward he made six boards.
28And two boards made he for the corners of the tabernacle in the hinder part.
29And they were double beneath; and in like manner they were entire unto the top thereof unto one ring: thus he did to both of them in the two corners.
30And there were eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; under every board two sockets.
31And he made bars of acacia wood; five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,
32and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the tabernacle for the hinder part westward.
33And he made the middle bar to pass through in the midst of the boards from the one end to the other.
34And he overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold for places for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold.
35And he made the veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: with cherubim, the work of the skilful workman, made he it.
36And he made thereunto four pillars of acacia, and overlaid them with gold: their hooks were of gold; And he cast for them four sockets of silver.
37And he made a screen for the door of the Tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of the embroiderer;
38and the five pillars of it with their hooks: and he overlaid their capitals and their fillets with gold; and their five sockets were of brass.
1So Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person in whom the Lord has put skill and ability to know how to do all the work for the service of the sanctuary are to do the work according to all that the Lord has commanded.”
2Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person in whom the Lord had put skill—everyone whose heart stirred him to volunteer to do the work.
3They received from Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to do the work for the service of the sanctuary, and they still continued to bring him a freewill offering each morning.
4So all the skilled people who were doing all the work on the sanctuary came from the work they were doing
5and told Moses, “The people are bringing much more than is needed for the completion of the work which the Lord commanded us to do!”
6Moses instructed them to take his message throughout the camp, saying, “Let no man or woman do anymore work for the offering for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing any more.
7Now the materials were more than enough for them to do all the work.
8All the skilled among those who were doing the work made the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twisted linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarn; they were made with cherubim that were the work of an artistic designer.
9The length of one curtain was 42 feet, and the width of one curtain was 6 feet—the same size for each of the curtains.
10He joined five of the curtains to one another, and the other five curtains he joined to one another.
11He made loops of blue material along the edge of the end curtain in the first set; he did the same along the edge of the end curtain in the second set.
12He made 50 loops on the first curtain, and he made 50 loops on the end curtain that was in the second set, with the loops opposite one another.
13He made 50 gold clasps and joined the curtains together to one another with the clasps, so that the tabernacle was a unit.
14He made curtains of goats’ hair for a tent over the tabernacle; he made 11 curtains.
15The length of one curtain was 45 feet, and the width of one curtain was 6 feet—one size for all 11 curtains.
16He joined five curtains by themselves and six curtains by themselves.
17He made 50 loops along the edge of the end curtain in the first set and 50 loops along the edge of the curtain that joined the second set.
18He made 50 bronze clasps to join the tent together so that it might be a unit.
19He made a covering for the tent out of ram skins dyed red and over that a covering of fine leather.
20He made the frames for the tabernacle of acacia wood as uprights.
21The length of each frame was 15 feet, the width of each frame was 2¼ feet,
22with two projections per frame parallel one to another. He made all the frames of the tabernacle in this way.
23So he made frames for the tabernacle: 20 frames for the south side.
24He made 40 silver bases under the 20 frames—two bases under the first frame for its two projections, and likewise two bases under the next frame for its two projections,
25and for the second side of the tabernacle, the north side, he made 20 frames
26and their 40 silver bases, two bases under the first frame and two bases under the next frame.
27And for the back of the tabernacle on the west he made six frames.
28He made two frames for the corners of the tabernacle on the back.
29At the two corners they were doubled at the lower end and finished together at the top in one ring. So he did for both.
30So there were eight frames and their silver bases, 16 bases, two bases under each frame.
31He made bars of acacia wood, five for the frames on one side of the tabernacle
32and five bars for the frames on the second side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the frames of the tabernacle for the back side on the west.
33He made the middle bar to reach from end to end in the center of the frames.
34He overlaid the frames with gold and made their rings of gold to provide places for the bars, and he overlaid the bars with gold.
35He made the special curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine twisted linen; he made it with cherubim, the work of an artistic designer.
36He made for it four posts of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold, with gold hooks, and he cast for them four silver bases.
37He made a hanging for the entrance of the tent of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine twisted linen, the work of an embroiderer,
38and its five posts and their hooks. He overlaid their tops and their bands with gold, but their five bases were bronze.
1“Bezalel and Oholiab shall work with every wise-hearted man, in whom Yahweh has put wisdom and understanding to know how to do all the work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that Yahweh has commanded.”
2Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab, and every wise-hearted man, in whose heart Yahweh had put wisdom, even everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to the work to do it:
3and they received from Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, with which to make it. They brought yet to him freewill offerings every morning.
4All the wise men, who performed all the work of the sanctuary, each came from his work which they did.
5They spoke to Moses, saying, “The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work which Yahweh commanded to make.”
6Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, “Let neither man nor woman make anything else for the offering for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing.
7For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
8All the wise-hearted men among those who did the work made the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twined linen, blue, purple, and scarlet, with cherubim, the work of the skillful workman, they made them.
9The length of each curtain was twenty-eight cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits. All the curtains had one measure.
10He coupled five curtains to one another, and the other five curtains he coupled to one another.
11He made loops of blue on the edge of the one curtain from the edge in the coupling. Likewise he made in the edge of the curtain that was outermost in the second coupling.
12He made fifty loops in the one curtain, and he made fifty loops in the edge of the curtain that was in the second coupling. The loops were opposite to one another.
13He made fifty clasps of gold, and coupled the curtains to one another with the clasps: so the tabernacle was a unit.
14He made curtains of goats’ hair for a covering over the tabernacle. He made them eleven curtains.
15The length of each curtain was thirty cubits, and four cubits the width of each curtain. The eleven curtains had one measure.
16He coupled five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves.
17He made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that was outermost in the coupling, and he made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain which was outermost in the second coupling.
18He made fifty clasps of brass to couple the tent together, that it might be a unit.
19He made a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red, and a covering of sea cow hides above.
20He made the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, standing up.
21Ten cubits was the length of a board, and a cubit and a half the width of each board.
22Each board had two tenons, joined to one another. He made all the boards of the tabernacle this way.
23He made the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side southward.
24He made forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under another board for its two tenons.
25For the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, he made twenty boards,
26and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
27For the far part of the tabernacle westward he made six boards.
28He made two boards for the corners of the tabernacle in the far part.
29They were double beneath, and in the same way they were all the way to its top to one ring. He did this to both of them in the two corners.
30There were eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; under every board two sockets.
31He made bars of acacia wood; five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,
32and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the tabernacle for the hinder part westward.
33He made the middle bar to pass through in the middle of the boards from the one end to the other.
34He overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold as places for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold.
35He made the veil of blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twined linen: with cherubim. He made it the work of a skillful workman.
36He made four pillars of acacia for it, and overlaid them with gold. Their hooks were of gold. He cast four sockets of silver for them.
37He made a screen for the door of the tent, of blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of an embroiderer;
38and the five pillars of it with their hooks. He overlaid their capitals and their fillets with gold, and their five sockets were of brass.
Summary
The craftsmen begin building the Tabernacle — its curtains, frames, and coverings — exactly as God commanded.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Israel remains encamped at Mount Sinai. Bezalel and the craftsmen construct the Tabernacle curtains and frames.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik marvels at the overflow of giving and notes that this is what happens when God's Spirit genuinely moves hearts. He draws the parallel between God's creative word in Genesis and the obedient construction here.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "More Than Enough" on vv.5-7 (MTP Vol. 19, No. 1108) "The people bring much more than enough! What a sentence! When did you last hear it in a church? The problem is never God's supply but our willingness. When hearts are truly stirred, hands open wide. The early church had all things common — not because they were commanded but because they were compelled by love. Oh, that God would so stir our hearts that the treasurer would cry, 'Enough! Bring no more!' That would be revival."
Reflection
- 1. The people gave "much more than enough" and had to be restrained (vv.5-7). What would it look like for your church community to give with such generosity? What holds you back from giving with abandon?
- 2. The craftsmen came because their hearts "stirred them up" (v.2). Are you serving in God's work from internal motivation or external obligation? What stirs your heart toward service?
- 3. The construction followed God's blueprint exactly (paralleling ch. 26). How important is it to do God's work God's way? Where are you tempted to improvise rather than follow His instructions?
- 4. The tabernacle was made "one" through clasps joining the curtains (v.13). How does this picture the unity God desires in His church? What role do you play in holding the body together?
- 5. The veil separated the Holy Place from God's immediate presence (v.35). Christ's death tore that veil (Matt 27:51). How does open access to God change your daily approach to prayer and worship?
