3I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name ‘the Lord’ I was not known to them.
4I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they were living as resident foreigners.
5I have also heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.

8I will bring you to the land I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—and I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”

Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes the seven "I will" promises as a complete picture of redemption, the progressive revelation of God's name, and the tragedy of Israel's inability to hear due to suffering.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Seven I Wills" on vv.6-8 (MTP Vol. 28, No. 1672) "Seven times God says 'I WILL' — and every 'I will' of God is as certain as if it were already done. I will bring you out — deliverance. I will rid you — freedom. I will redeem you — purchase. I will take you — relationship. I will be your God — identity. I will bring you in — inheritance. I will give it you — possession. From bondage to inheritance in seven divine declarations. And not one 'you must' among them. This is grace: God does it all. Our part? Believe it. Receive it. Rest in it."
Reflection
- 1. The seven "I wills" (vv.6-8): God's redemption is comprehensive. He doesn't just free you FROM something — He brings you INTO relationship, identity, and inheritance. Which of these seven promises do you need to hear today?
- 2. "They hearkened not... for anguish of spirit" (v.9). Suffering can make us deaf to God's promises. If you're in deep pain right now, you may not be able to "hear" hope. That's okay. God's promises remain true whether you can feel them or not.
- 3. "I am the LORD" — repeated three times (vv.2, 6, 8). God's identity is the foundation of His promises. He can do what He says because He IS who He says. Do you know Him — not just His name but His character?
- 4. Moses objects again (v.12) — even after God's magnificent promises. We can hear God's word and still feel inadequate. God doesn't rebuke Moses — He provides Aaron. God meets us in our weakness.
- 5. The genealogy (vv.14-25) grounds the story in real history — real families, real people. God works through ordinary lineages. Your family history, however messy, is part of God's story.
