Ezekiel — Chapter 11

1Moreover the spirit lifted me up, and brought me unto the east gate of the LORD’S house, which looketh eastward: and behold at the door of the gate five and twenty men; among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, the princes of the people.

2Then said he unto me, Son of man, these are the men that devise mischief, and give wicked counsel in this city:

3Which say, It is not near; let us build houses: this city is the caldron, and we be the flesh.

4Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, O son of man.

5And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them.

6Ye have multiplied your slain in this city, and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain.

7Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Your slain whom ye have laid in the midst of it, they are the flesh, and this city is the caldron: but I will bring you forth out of the midst of it.

8Ye have feared the sword; and I will bring a sword upon you, saith the Lord GOD.

9And I will bring you out of the midst thereof, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you.

10Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the border of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

11This city shall not be your caldron, neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof; but I will judge you in the border of Israel:

12And ye shall know that I am the LORD: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither executed my judgments, but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you.

13And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord GOD! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel?

14Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

15Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel wholly, are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from the LORD: unto us is this land given in possession.

16Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come.

17Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.

18And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence.

19And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

20That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

21But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD.

22Then did the cherubims lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.

23And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city.

24Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.

25Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that the LORD had shewed me.

1Moreover the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me unto the east gate of Jehovah`s house, which looketh eastward: and behold, at the door of the gate five and twenty men; and I saw in the midst of them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people.

2And he said unto me, Son of man, these are the men that devise iniquity, and that give wicked counsel in this city;

3that say, [The time] is not near to build houses: this [city] is the caldron, and we are the flesh.

4Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, O son of man.

5And the Spirit of Jehovah fell upon me, and he said unto me, Speak, Thus saith Jehovah: Thus have ye said, O house of Israel; for I know the things that come into your mind.

6Ye have multiplied your slain in this city, and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain.

7Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Your slain whom ye have laid in the midst of it, they are the flesh, and this [city] is the caldron; but ye shall be brought forth out of the midst of it.

8Ye have feared the sword; and I will bring the sword upon you, saith the Lord Jehovah.

9And I will bring you forth out of the midst thereof, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you.

10Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the border of Israel; and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.

11This [city] shall not be your caldron, neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof; I will judge you in the border of Israel;

12and ye shall know that I am Jehovah: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither have ye executed mine ordinances, but have done after the ordinances of the nations that are round about you.

13And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord Jehovah! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel?

14And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

15Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel, all of them, [are they] unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from Jehovah; unto us is this land given for a possession.

16Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Whereas I have removed them far off among the nations, and whereas I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them a sanctuary for a little while in the countries where they are come.

17Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will gather you from the peoples, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.

18And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence.

19And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh;

20that they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

21But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord Jehovah.

22Then did the cherubim lift up their wings, and the wheels were beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.

23And the glory of Jehovah went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city.

24And the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me in the vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.

25Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that Jehovah had showed me.

1A wind lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lord’s temple that faces the east. There, at the entrance of the gate, I noticed 25 men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, officials of the people.

2The Lord said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who plot evil and give wicked advice in this city.

3They say, ‘The time is not near to build houses; the city is a cooking pot, and we are the meat in it.’

4Therefore, prophesy against them! Prophesy, son of man!”

5Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon me and said to me, “Say: ‘This is what the Lord says: This is what you are thinking, O house of Israel; I know what goes through your minds.

6You have killed many people in this city; you have filled its streets with corpses.’

7Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘The corpses you have dumped in the midst of the city are the meat, and this city is the cooking pot, but I will take you out of it.

8You fear the sword, so the sword I will bring against you,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.

9‘But I will take you out of the city. And I will hand you over to foreigners. I will execute judgments on you.

10You will die by the sword; I will judge you at the border of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

11This city will not be a cooking pot for you, and you will not be meat within it; I will judge you at the border of Israel.

12Then you will know that I am the Lord, whose statutes you have not followed and whose regulations you have not carried out. Instead you have behaved according to the regulations of the nations around you!’”

13Now, while I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I threw myself face down and cried out with a loud voice, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! You are completely wiping out the remnant of Israel!”

14Then the Lord’s message came to me:

15“Son of man, your brothers, your relatives, and the whole house of Israel, all of them are those to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘They have gone far away from the Lord; to us this land has been given as a possession.’

16“Therefore say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Although I have removed them far away among the nations and have dispersed them among the countries, I have been a little sanctuary for them among the lands where they have gone.’

17“Therefore say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I regather you from the peoples and assemble you from the lands where you have been dispersed, I will give you back the country of Israel.’

18“When they return to it, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations.

19I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within them; I will remove the hearts of stone from their bodies and I will give them tender hearts,

20so that they may follow my statutes and observe my regulations and carry them out. Then they will be my people, and I will be their God.

21But those whose hearts are devoted to detestable things and abominations, I hereby repay them for what they have done, says the Sovereign Lord.”

22Then the cherubim spread their wings with their wheels alongside them while the glory of the God of Israel hovered above them.

23The glory of the Lord rose up from within the city and stopped over the mountain east of it.

24Then a wind lifted me up and carried me to the exiles in Babylonia, in the vision given to me by the Spirit of God. Then the vision I had seen went up from me.

25So I told the exiles everything the Lord had shown me.

1Moreover the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me to the east gate of Yahweh’s house, which looks eastward. Behold, twenty-five men were at the door of the gate; and I saw among them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people.

2He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity, and who give wicked counsel in this city;

3who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. This is the cauldron, and we are the meat.’

4Therefore prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man.”

5Yahweh’s Spirit fell on me, and he said to me, “Speak, ‘Yahweh says: “Thus you have said, house of Israel; for I know the things that come into your mind.

6You have multiplied your slain in this city, and you have filled its streets with the slain.

7“‘Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Your slain whom you have laid in the middle of it, they are the meat, and this is the cauldron; but you will be brought out of the middle of it.

8You have feared the sword; and I will bring the sword on you,” says the Lord Yahweh.

9“I will bring you out of the middle of it, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you.

10You will fall by the sword. I will judge you in the border of Israel. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.

11This will not be your cauldron, neither will you be the meat in the middle of it. I will judge you in the border of Israel.

12You will know that I am Yahweh, for you have not walked in my statutes, You have not executed my ordinances, but have done after the ordinances of the nations that are around you.”’”

13When I prophesied, Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down on my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, “Ah Lord Yahweh! will you make a full end of the remnant of Israel?”

14Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

15“Son of man, your brothers, even your brothers, the men of your relatives, and all the house of Israel, all of them, are they to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Go far away from Yahweh. This land has been given to us for a possession.’”

16“Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Whereas I have removed them far off among the nations, and whereas I have scattered them among the countries, yet I will be to them a sanctuary for a little while in the countries where they have come.”’

17“Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “I will gather you from the peoples, and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”

18“‘They will come there, and they will take away all its detestable things and all its abominations from there.

19I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh;

20that they may walk in my statutes, and keep my ordinances, and do them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.

21But as for them whose heart walks after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their way on their own heads,’ says the Lord Yahweh.”

22Then the cherubim lifted up their wings, and the wheels were beside them. The glory of the God of Israel was over them above.

23Yahweh’s glory went up from the middle of the city, and stood on the mountain which is on the east side of the city.

24The Spirit lifted me up, and brought me in the vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to the captives. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.

25Then I spoke to the captives all the things that Yahweh had shown me.

Summary

Ezekiel sees 25 wicked counselors at the east gate giving evil advice ("This city is the caldron, and we be the flesh" — false security). God kills Pelatiah on the spot. Then the stunning promise: though scattered, God will be a "little sanctuary" to the exiles AND give them a new heart — "one heart, and a new spirit." The glory finally departs to the Mount of Olives.

Authorship & Background

Author: Ezekiel son of Buzi (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Classification: Prophetic Vision — Evil Counselors + New Heart Promise + Final Departure Key Themes: Wicked leadership giving false security, God as sanctuary in exile, the new heart promise, the glory departing to the Mount of Olives, the vision ends
Historical Context: The temple vision (chs.8-11) concludes. Twenty-five men (likely the same sun-worshippers of 8:16 or civic leaders) give EVIL counsel: "This city is the caldron, we are the flesh" (v.3) — meaning "the city protects us like a pot protects meat." God REVERSES the metaphor: yes, it's a caldron, but the bodies IN it are those you've murdered, and YOU will be removed and judged OUTSIDE the walls (vv.7-12). During the prophecy, Pelatiah DIES (v.13) — prompting Ezekiel's anguished cry. God responds with GRACE: the exiles (not the Jerusalem elite) will receive a new heart. Then the glory completes its departure: from the east gate to the Mount of Olives — and stops. It doesn't go to Babylon. It hovers EAST of Jerusalem, visible to anyone who looks. Waiting.
Structure:
  • The 25 Evil Counselors (vv.1-4)
  • God's Judgment: YOU Leave the Caldron (vv.5-12)
  • Pelatiah Dies; Ezekiel Protests (v.13)
  • Promise to the Exiles: A Little Sanctuary (vv.14-16)
  • The New Heart: One Heart, New Spirit (vv.17-21)
  • The Glory Departs to the Mount of Olives (vv.22-25)

Map & Geography

  • Jerusalem (v.15): Capital of Judah; the holy city where the Temple stood.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
  • Charles Spurgeon: "'I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them an heart of flesh.' This is the gospel in OT clothes. You cannot soften your own heart — but God can REPLACE it. You don't need heart medication; you need a heart TRANSPLANT. And God performs the surgery."

Reflection

  • 1. "I will be a little sanctuary" (v.16). You don't need a building, a denomination, or a geographic location for God's presence. HE is your sanctuary — portable, personal, present wherever you are.
  • 2. The heart transplant (v.19). You cannot soften your own heart by trying harder. God must REMOVE the stone and REPLACE it with flesh. Ask for the surgery. Human effort produces behavior modification; God's surgery produces nature transformation.
  • 3. The glory pauses on the Mount of Olives (v.23). God doesn't DISAPPEAR — He moves to where He can be SEEN, waiting. The departure isn't permanent abandonment — it's relocation with a promise of return. Jesus will come back to that same spot.
  • 4. The purpose of the new heart: OBEDIENCE (v.20). The new heart isn't just so you feel better — it's so you can finally WALK in God's statutes. Internal transformation produces external faithfulness.
  • 5. "They shall be my people, I will be their God" (v.20). The covenant formula — the simplest summary of God's ultimate goal. Everything (judgment, exile, new hearts) serves this one relational destination.
