Ezekiel — Chapter 12

1The word of the LORD also came unto me, saying,
2Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.
3Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a rebellious house.
4Then shalt thou bring forth thy stuff by day in their sight, as stuff for removing: and thou shalt go forth at even in their sight, as they that go forth into captivity.
5Dig thou through the wall in their sight, and carry out thereby.
6In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulders, and carry it forth in the twilight: thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the ground: for I have set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.
7And I did so as I was commanded: I brought forth my stuff by day, as stuff for captivity, and in the even I digged through the wall with mine hand; I brought it forth in the twilight, and I bare it upon my shoulder in their sight.
8And in the morning came the word of the LORD unto me, saying,
9Son of man, hath not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said unto thee, What doest thou?
10Say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; This burden concerneth the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel that are among them.
11Say, I am your sign: like as I have done, so shall it be done unto them: they shall remove and go into captivity.
12And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the twilight, and shall go forth: they shall dig through the wall to carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, that he see not the ground with his eyes.
13My net also will I spread upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare: and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet shall he not see it, though he shall die there.
14And I will scatter toward every wind all that are about him to help him, and all his bands; and I will draw out the sword after them.
15And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall scatter them among the nations, and disperse them in the countries.
16But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence; that they may declare all their abominations among the heathen whither they come; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
17Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
18Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with carefulness;
19And say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with carefulness, and drink their water with astonishment, that her land may be desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein.
20And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be desolate; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
21And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
22Son of man, what is that proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth?
23Tell them therefore, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will make this proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say unto them, The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision.
24For there shall be no more any vain vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel.
25For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord GOD.
26Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
27Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he seeth is for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the times that are far off.
28Therefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; There shall none of my words be prolonged any more, but the word which I have spoken shall be done, saith the Lord GOD.
1The word of Jehovah also came unto me, saying,
2Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of the rebellious house, that have eyes to see, and see not, that have ears to hear, and hear not; for they are a rebellious house.
3Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.
4And thou shalt bring forth thy stuff by day in their sight, as stuff for removing; and thou shalt go forth thyself at even in their sight, as when men go forth into exile.
5Dig thou through the wall in their sight, and carry out thereby.
6In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulder, and carry it forth in the dark; thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the land: for I have set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.
7And I did so as I was commanded: I brought forth my stuff by day, as stuff for removing, and in the even I digged through the wall with my hand; I brought it forth in the dark, and bare it upon my shoulder in their sight.
8And in the morning came the word of Jehovah unto me, saying,
9Son of man, hath not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said unto thee, What doest thou?
10Say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: This burden [concerneth] the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel among whom they are.
11Say, I am your sign: like as I have done, so shall it be done unto them; they shall go into exile, into captivity.
12And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the dark, and shall go forth: they shall dig through the wall to carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, because he shall not see the land with his eyes.
13My net also will I spread upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare; and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet shall he not see it, though he shall die there.
14And I will scatter toward every wind all that are round about him to help him, and all his bands; and I will draw out the sword after them.
15And they shall know that I am Jehovah, when I shall disperse them among the nations, and scatter them through the countries.
16But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence; that they may declare all their abominations among the nations whither they come; and they shall know that I am Jehovah.
17Moreover the word of Jehovah came to me, saying,
18Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with fearfulness;
19and say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the land of Israel: They shall eat their bread with fearfulness, and drink their water in dismay, that her land may be desolate, [and despoiled] of all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein.
20And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be a desolation; and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.
21And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
22Son of man, what is this proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth?
23Tell them therefore, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will make this proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say unto them, The days are at hand, and the fulfilment of every vision.
24For there shall be no more any false vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel.
25For I am Jehovah; I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall be performed; it shall be no more deferred: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I speak the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord Jehovah.
26Again the word of Jehovah came to me, saying,
27Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he seeth is for many day to come, and he prophesieth of times that are far off.
28Therefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: There shall none of my words be deferred any more, but the word which I shall speak shall be performed, saith the Lord Jehovah.
1The Lord’s message came to me:
2“Son of man, you are living in the midst of a rebellious house. They have eyes to see, but do not see, and ears to hear, but do not hear, because they are a rebellious house.
3“Therefore, son of man, pack up your belongings as if for exile. During the day, while they are watching, pretend to go into exile. Go from where you live to another place. Perhaps they will understand, although they are a rebellious house.
4Bring out your belongings packed for exile during the day while they are watching. And go out at evening, while they are watching, as if for exile.
5While they are watching, dig a hole in the wall and carry your belongings out through it.
6While they are watching, raise your baggage onto your shoulder and carry it out in the dark. You must cover your face so that you cannot see the ground because I have made you an object lesson to the house of Israel.”
7So I did just as I was commanded. I carried out my belongings packed for exile during the day, and at evening I dug myself a hole through the wall with my hands. I went out in the darkness, carrying my baggage on my shoulder while they watched.
8The Lord’s message came to me in the morning:
9“Son of man, has not the house of Israel, that rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’
10Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The prince will raise this burden in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel within it.’
11Say, ‘I am an object lesson for you. Just as I have done, so it will be done to them; they will go into exile and captivity.’
12“The prince who is among them will raise his belongings onto his shoulder in darkness and will go out. He will dig a hole in the wall to leave through. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land with his eyes.
13But I will throw my net over him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans (but he will not see it), and there he will die.
14All his retinue—his attendants and his troops—I will scatter to every wind; I will unleash a sword behind them.
15“Then they will know that I am the Lord when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them among foreign countries.
16But I will let a small number of them survive the sword, famine, and pestilence, so that they can confess all their abominable practices to the nations where they go. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
17The Lord’s message came to me:
18“Son of man, eat your bread with trembling and drink your water with anxious shaking.
19Then say to the people of the land, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says about the inhabitants of Jerusalem and of the land of Israel: They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water in fright, for their land will be stripped bare of all it contains because of the violence of all who live in it.
20The inhabited towns will be left in ruins, and the land will be devastated. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”
21The Lord’s message came to me:
22“Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel, ‘The days pass slowly, and every vision fails’?
23Therefore tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I hereby end this proverb; they will not recite it in Israel any longer.’ But say to them, ‘The days are at hand when every vision will be fulfilled.
24For there will no longer be any false visions or flattering omens amidst the house of Israel.
25For I, the Lord, will speak. Whatever word I speak will be accomplished. It will not be delayed any longer. Indeed in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the word and accomplish it, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
26The Lord’s message came to me:
27“Take note, son of man, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for distant days; he is prophesying about the far future.’
28Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: None of my words will be delayed any longer! The word I speak will come to pass, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
1Yahweh’s word also came to me, saying,
2“Son of man, you dwell in the middle of the rebellious house, who have eyes to see, and don’t see, who have ears to hear, and don’t hear; for they are a rebellious house.
3“Therefore, you son of man, prepare your stuff for moving, and move by day in their sight. You shall move from your place to another place in their sight. It may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.
4You shall bring out your stuff by day in their sight, as stuff for moving. You shall go out yourself at evening in their sight, as when men go out into exile.
5Dig through the wall in their sight, and carry your stuff out that way.
6In their sight you shall bear it on your shoulder, and carry it out in the dark. You shall cover your face, so that you don’t see the land, for I have set you for a sign to the house of Israel.”
7I did so as I was commanded. I brought out my stuff by day, as stuff for moving, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my hand. I brought it out in the dark, and bore it on my shoulder in their sight.
8In the morning, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
9“Son of man, hasn’t the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’
10“Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel among whom they are.”’
11“Say, ‘I am your sign. As I have done, so will it be done to them. They will go into exile, into captivity.
12“‘The prince who is among them will bear on his shoulder in the dark, and will go out. They will dig through the wall to carry things out that way. He will cover his face, because he will not see the land with his eyes.
13I will also spread my net on him, and he will be taken in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will not see it, though he will die there.
14I will scatter toward every wind all who are around him to help him, and all his bands. I will draw out the sword after them.
15“‘They will know that I am Yahweh when I disperse them among the nations, and scatter them through the countries.
16But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence, that they may declare all their abominations among the nations where they come. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”
17Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
18“Son of man, eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with trembling and with fearfulness.
19Tell the people of the land, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the land of Israel: “They will eat their bread with fearfulness, and drink their water in dismay, that her land may be desolate, and all that is therein, because of the violence of all those who dwell therein.
20The cities that are inhabited will be laid waste, and the land will be a desolation. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.”’”
21Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
22“Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days are prolonged, and every vision fails?’
23Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “I will make this proverb to cease, and they will no more use it as a proverb in Israel;”’ but tell them, ‘“The days are at hand, and the fulfillment of every vision.
24For there will be no more any false vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel.
25For I am Yahweh. I will speak, and the word that I speak will be performed. It will be no more deferred; for in your days, rebellious house, I will speak the word, and will perform it,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”
26Again Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
27“Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, ‘The vision that he sees is for many day to come, and he prophesies of times that are far off.’
28“Therefore tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “None of my words will be deferred any more, but the word which I speak will be performed,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”
Summary
Two more sign-acts: (1) Ezekiel packs exile-baggage in daylight, then digs through the wall at evening and carries it out with covered face — enacting Zedekiah's attempted escape from Jerusalem (fulfilled: 2 Kings 25:4). "He shall not SEE" Babylon though he goes there (blinding). (2) Ezekiel eats bread with trembling — enacting the terror of the siege. God rebukes the proverb: "The days are prolonged and every vision faileth." NO — "the days are at hand."

Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
- Charles Spurgeon: "'Every vision faileth' — said the skeptics. They always say this. In every generation, mockers say 'prophecy has failed.' And then fulfillment arrives and silences them. God's word is never late; OUR impatience is always early."
Reflection
- 1. "Every vision faileth" (v.22). If you've been waiting for God's promises and started to doubt — you're using the false proverb. God's word doesn't fail; it runs on HIS schedule, not yours.
- 2. No more delay (v.28). There comes a moment when the gap between promise and fulfillment CLOSES. Suddenly, rapidly, completely. Don't assume slow = never.
- 3. The face-covering (v.6). Zedekiah couldn't see his future — and neither can we. But God sees it clearly and warns in advance. Trust His sight when you can't see.
- 4. Sign-acts demand AUDIENCE (v.3). Ezekiel did this publicly ("in their sight"). Prophetic truth is meant to be SEEN, not hidden. Live your faith visibly.
