Ezekiel — Chapter 21

1And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop thy word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel,

3And say to the land of Israel, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of his sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked.

4Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:

5That all flesh may know that I the LORD have drawn forth my sword out of his sheath: it shall not return any more.

6Sigh therefore, thou son of man, with the breaking of thy loins; and with bitterness sigh before their eyes.

7And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer, For the tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord GOD.

8Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

9Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished:

10It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree.

11And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.

12Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh.

13Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD.

14Thou therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thine hands together, and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their privy chambers.

15I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is wrapped up for the slaughter.

16Go thee one way or other, either on the right hand, or on the left, whithersoever thy face is set.

17I will also smite mine hands together, and I will cause my fury to rest: I the LORD have said it.

18The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,

19Also, thou son of man, appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both twain shall come forth out of one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city.

20Appoint a way, that the sword may come to Rabbath of the Ammonites, and to Judah in Jerusalem the defenced.

21For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver.

22At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a fort.

23And it shall be unto them as a false divination in their sight, to them that have sworn oaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity, that they may be taken.

24Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand.

25And thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end,

26Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high.

27I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him.

28And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering:

29Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.

30Shall I cause it to return into his sheath? I will judge thee in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity.

31And I will pour out mine indignation upon thee, I will blow against thee in the fire of my wrath, and deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy.

32Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I the LORD have spoken it.

1And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

2Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop [thy word] toward the sanctuaries, and prophesy against the land of Israel;

3and say to the land of Israel, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked.

4Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:

5and all flesh shall know that I, Jehovah, have drawn forth my sword out of its sheath; it shall not return any more.

6Sigh therefore, thou son of man; with the breaking of thy loins and with bitterness shalt thou sigh before their eyes.

7And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt say, Because of the tidings, for it cometh; and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and it shall be done, saith the Lord Jehovah.

8And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,

9Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith Jehovah: Say, A sword, a sword, it is sharpened, and also furbished;

10it is sharpened that it may make a slaughter; it is furbished that it may be as lightning: shall we then make mirth? the rod of my son, it contemneth every tree.

11And it is given to be furbished, that it may be handled: the sword, it is sharpened, yea, it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.

12Cry and wail, son of man; for it is upon my people, it is upon all the princes of Israel: they are delivered over to the sword with my people; smite therefore upon thy thigh.

13For there is a trial; and what if even the rod that contemneth shall be no more? saith the Lord Jehovah.

14Thou therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thy hands together; and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the deadly wounded: it is the sword of the great one that is deadly wounded, which entereth into their chambers.

15I have set the threatening sword against all their gates, that their heart may melt, and their stumblings be multiplied: ah! it is made as lightning, it is pointed for slaughter.

16Gather thee together, go to the right, set thyself in array, go to the left, whithersoever thy face is set.

17I will also smite my hands together, and I will cause my wrath to rest: I, Jehovah, have spoken it.

18The word of Jehovah came unto me again, saying,

19Also, thou son of man, appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come; they twain shall come forth out of one land: and mark out a place, mark it out at the head of the way to the city.

20Thou shalt appoint a way for the sword to come to Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and to Judah in Jerusalem the fortified.

21For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he shook the arrows to and fro, he consulted the teraphim, he looked in the liver.

22In his right hand was the divination [for] Jerusalem, to set battering rams, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, to cast up mounds, to build forts.

23And it shall be unto them as a false divination in their sight, who have sworn oaths unto them; but he bringeth iniquity to remembrance, that they may be taken.

24Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand.

25And thou, O deadly wounded wicked one, the prince of Israel, whose day is come, in the time of the iniquity of the end,

26thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Remove the mitre, and take off the crown; this [shall be] no more the same; exalt that which is low, and abase that which is high.

27I will overturn, overturn, overturn it: this also shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it [him].

28And thou, son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning the children of Ammon, and concerning their reproach; and say thou, A sword, a sword is drawn, for the slaughter it is furbished, to cause it to devour, that it may be as lightning;

29while they see for thee false visions, while they divine lies unto thee, to lay thee upon the necks of the wicked that are deadly wounded, whose day is come in the time of the iniquity of the end.

30Cause it to return into its sheath. In the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy birth, will I judge thee.

31And I will pour out mine indignation upon thee; I will blow upon thee with the fire of my wrath; and I will deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, skilful to destroy.

32Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I, Jehovah, have spoken it.

1(21:6) The Lord’s message came to me:

2“Son of man, turn toward Jerusalem and speak out against the sanctuaries. Prophesy against the land of Israel

3and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look, I am against you. I will draw my sword from its sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.

4Because I will cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked, my sword will go out from its sheath against everyone from the south to the north.

5Then everyone will know that I am the Lord, who drew my sword from its sheath—it will not be sheathed again!’

6“And you, son of man, groan with an aching heart and bitterness; groan before their eyes.

7When they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you will reply, ‘Because of the report that has come. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand will be limp; everyone will faint, and every knee will be wet with urine.’ Pay attention—it is coming and it will happen, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

8The Lord’s message came to me:

9“Son of man, prophesy and say: ‘This is what the Lord says: “‘A sword, a sword is sharpened and also polished.

10It is sharpened for slaughter; it is polished to flash like lightning!“‘Should we rejoice in the scepter of my son? No! The sword despises every tree!

11“‘He gave it to be polished, to be grasped in the hand— the sword is sharpened, it is polished— giving it into the hand of the executioner.

12Cry out and moan, son of man, for it is wielded against my people, against all the princes of Israel. They are delivered up to the sword, along with my people. Therefore, strike your thigh.

13“‘For testing will come, and what will happen when the scepter, which the sword despises, is no more? declares the Sovereign Lord.’

14“And you, son of man, prophesy, and clap your hands together. Let the sword strike twice, even three times! It is a sword for slaughter, a sword for the great slaughter surrounding them.

15So hearts melt with fear and many stumble. At all their gates I have stationed the sword for slaughter. Ah! It is made to flash, it is drawn for slaughter!

16Cut sharply on the right! Swing to the left, wherever your edge is appointed to strike.

17I too will clap my hands together, I will exhaust my rage; I, the Lord, have spoken.”

18The Lord’s message came to me:

19“You, son of man, mark out two routes for the king of Babylon’s sword to take; both of them will originate in a single land. Make a signpost and put it at the beginning of the road leading to the city.

20Mark out the routes for the sword to take: ‘Rabbah of the Ammonites’ and ‘Judah with Jerusalem in it.’

21For the king of Babylon stands at the fork in the road at the head of the two routes. He looks for omens: He shakes arrows, he consults idols, he examines animal livers.

22Into his right hand comes the portent for Jerusalem—to set up battering rams, to give the signal for slaughter, to shout out the battle cry, to set up battering rams against the gates, to erect a siege ramp, and to build a siege wall.

23But those in Jerusalem will view it as a false omen. They have sworn solemn oaths, but the king of Babylon will accuse them of violations in order to seize them.

24“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because you have brought up your own guilt by uncovering your transgressions and revealing your sins through all your actions, for this reason you will be taken by force.

25“‘As for you, profane and wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, the time of final punishment,

26this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Tear off the turban; take off the crown! Things must change. Exalt the lowly; bring low the exalted!

27A total ruin I will make it! Indeed, this will not be until he comes to whom is the right, and I will give it to him.’

28“As for you, son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says concerning the Ammonites and their coming humiliation: “‘A sword, a sword drawn for slaughter, polished to consume, to flash like lightning—

29while seeing false visions about you and reading lying omens about you— to place you on the necks of the profane wicked, whose day has come, the time of final punishment.

30Return it to its sheath! In the place where you were created, in your native land, I will judge you.

31I will pour out my anger on you; the fire of my fury I will blow on you. I will hand you over to brutal men, who are skilled in destruction.

32You will become fuel for the fire— your blood will stain the middle of the land; you will no longer be remembered, for I, the Lord, have spoken.’”

1Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

2“Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem, and preach toward the sanctuaries, and prophesy against the land of Israel.

3Tell the land of Israel, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I am against you, and will draw my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked.

4Seeing then that I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked, therefore my sword will go out of its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north.

5All flesh will know that I, Yahweh, have drawn my sword out of its sheath. It will not return any more.”’

6“Therefore sigh, you son of man. You shall sigh before their eyes with a broken heart and with bitterness.

7It shall be, when they ask you, ‘Why do you sigh?’ that you shall say, ‘Because of the news, for it comes! Every heart will melt, all hands will be feeble, every spirit will faint, and all knees will be weak as water. Behold, it comes, and it shall be done, says the Lord Yahweh.’”

8Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

9“Son of man, prophesy, and say, ‘Yahweh says: “A sword! A sword! It is sharpened, and also polished.

10It is sharpened that it may make a slaughter. It is polished that it may be as lightning. Should we then make mirth? The rod of my son condemns every tree.

11It is given to be polished, that it may be handled. The sword is sharpened. Yes, it is polished to give it into the hand of the killer.”’

12Cry and wail, son of man; for it is on my people. It is on all the princes of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with my people. Therefore beat your thigh.

13“For there is a trial. What if even the rod that condemns will be no more?” says the Lord Yahweh.

14“You therefore, son of man, prophesy, and strike your hands together. Let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the fatally wounded. It is the sword of the great one who is fatally wounded, which enters into their rooms.

15I have set the threatening sword against all their gates, that their heart may melt, and their stumblings be multiplied. Ah! It is made as lightning. It is pointed for slaughter.

16Gather yourselves together. Go to the right. Set yourselves in array. Go to the left, wherever your face is set.

17I will also strike my hands together, and I will cause my wrath to rest. I, Yahweh, have spoken it.”

18Yahweh’s word came to me again, saying,

19“Also, you son of man, appoint two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come. They both will come out of one land, and mark out a place. Mark it out at the head of the way to the city.

20You shall appoint a way for the sword to come to Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and to Judah in Jerusalem the fortified.

21For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination. He shook the arrows back and forth. He consulted the teraphim. He looked in the liver.

22In his right hand was the lot for Jerusalem, to set battering rams, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, to cast up mounds, and to build forts.

23It will be to them as a false divination in their sight, who have sworn oaths to them; but he brings iniquity to memory, that they may be taken.

24“Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because you have caused your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your doings your sins appear; because you have come to memory, you will be taken with the hand.

25“‘You, deadly wounded wicked one, the prince of Israel, whose day has come, in the time of the iniquity of the end,

26thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Remove the turban, and take off the crown. This will not be as it was. Exalt that which is low, and humble that which is high.

27I will overturn, overturn, overturn it. This also will be no more, until he comes whose right it is; and I will give it.”’

28“You, son of man, prophesy, and say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says this concerning the children of Ammon, and concerning their reproach: “A sword! A sword is drawn! It is polished for the slaughter, to cause it to devour, that it may be as lightning;

29while they see for you false visions, while they divine lies to you, to lay you on the necks of the wicked who are deadly wounded, whose day has come in the time of the iniquity of the end.

30Cause it to return into its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your birth, I will judge you.

31I will pour out my indignation on you. I will blow on you with the fire of my wrath. I will deliver you into the hand of brutish men, skillful to destroy.

32You will be for fuel to the fire. Your blood will be in the middle of the land. You will be remembered no more; for I, Yahweh, have spoken it.”’”

Summary

The sword of the LORD is unsheathed. God commands Ezekiel to sigh deeply as a sign, then delivers a dramatic "sword song" — the blade is sharpened and polished for slaughter. Nebuchadnezzar stands at a crossroads using divination to choose his target, and the lot falls on Jerusalem. The chapter culminates with the overthrow of Judah's crown and the cryptic prophecy: "until he come whose right it is" — a Messianic pointer amid total devastation.

Authorship & Background

Author: Ezekiel son of Buzi (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle / Sword Song (War Poetry) Key Themes: The unsheathed sword of the LORD, Ezekiel's sighing as a sign-act, the sword sharpened for slaughter, Nebuchadnezzar at the crossroads, divination overruled by sovereignty, the crown removed, "until he come whose right it is"
Historical Context: This chapter escalates the judgment announcements of chapters 15-20 into direct military imagery. The "sword" is Nebuchadnezzar's army — but it is GOD'S sword, drawn from GOD'S sheath (v.3). The distinction matters: Babylon is merely the weapon; the LORD is the Warrior wielding it.
The vivid scene of Nebuchadnezzar at the crossroads (vv.19-22) depicts the Babylonian king using three forms of divination — shaking arrows (belomancy), consulting teraphim (household idols), and examining a liver (hepatoscopy) — to decide whether to attack Ammon or Jerusalem. All three point to Jerusalem. The irony: pagan divination methods arrive at the correct answer because GOD sovereignly directs even superstitious lots.
The chapter's climax (vv.25-27) addresses Zedekiah directly: "Remove the diadem, take off the crown... I will overturn, overturn, overturn it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is." This is Messianic prophecy embedded in judgment — the crown is removed from Zedekiah but reserved for the One with the rightful claim (Christ — cf. Genesis 49:10).
Structure:
  • The Sword Drawn Against Israel (vv.1-7)
  • The Sword Song: Sharpened and Polished (vv.8-17)
  • Nebuchadnezzar at the Crossroads (vv.18-23)
  • Judgment on Zedekiah: Crown Removed (vv.24-27)
  • The Sword Against Ammon (vv.28-32)

Map & Geography

  • Jerusalem (v.2, v.20, v.22): Capital of Judah; the holy city where the Temple stood.
  • Babylon (v.19, v.21): Capital of the Babylonian empire; place of Judah's exile (modern Iraq).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
  • Charles Spurgeon: "'Until He come whose right it is.' What a word! The crown lies in the dust, the throne is overturned, the sceptre is broken — yet it is not destroyed but RESERVED. Through centuries of vacancy, through the long night of Israel's crownless shame, the diadem waits for its rightful Owner. And He WILL come."

Reflection

  • 1. God wields the sword (v.3). Behind every instrument of discipline in your life — circumstances, consequences, even enemies — stands the sovereign hand of God. The sword is HIS. Don't mistake the instrument for the Wielder.
  • 2. Sometimes the message IS the groan (v.7). Words aren't always enough. Sometimes God calls you to FEEL the weight of what's coming — to carry it in your body. Intercession isn't always verbal. Sometimes it's tears and sighing.
  • 3. God directs even pagan decisions (v.21). Nebuchadnezzar used superstition — but God directed the outcome. You serve a God who is sovereign over every "random" decision, every lot cast, every fork in the road. Nothing is outside His governance.
  • 4. The crown is RESERVED, not destroyed (v.27). In your darkest overthrow, when everything is "overturned" — remember: God is not destroying your future. He is clearing space for the rightful King. Christ's crown was always coming. Your temporary loss serves an eternal purpose.
  • 5. Three overturns before restoration. Sometimes God has to break the same thing multiple times before we stop rebuilding it on the wrong foundation. Let Him overturn what needs overturning.
