Ezekiel — Chapter 43

1Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east:

2And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory.

3And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face.

4And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east.

5So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house.

6And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me.

7And he said unto me, Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and my holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places.

8In their setting of their threshold by my thresholds, and their post by my posts, and the wall between me and them, they have even defiled my holy name by their abominations that they have committed: wherefore I have consumed them in mine anger.

9Now let them put away their whoredom, and the carcases of their kings, far from me, and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever.

10Thou son of man, shew the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities: and let them measure the pattern.

11And if they be ashamed of all that they have done, shew them the form of the house, and the fashion thereof, and the goings out thereof, and the comings in thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the laws thereof: and write it in their sight, that they may keep the whole form thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and do them.

12This is the law of the house; Upon the top of the mountain the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house.

13And these are the measures of the altar after the cubits: The cubit is a cubit and an hand breadth; even the bottom shall be a cubit, and the breadth a cubit, and the border thereof by the edge thereof round about shall be a span: and this shall be the higher place of the altar.

14And from the bottom upon the ground even to the lower settle shall be two cubits, and the breadth one cubit; and from the lesser settle even to the greater settle shall be four cubits, and the breadth one cubit.

15So the altar shall be four cubits; and from the altar and upward shall be four horns.

16And the altar shall be twelve cubits long, twelve broad, square in the four squares thereof.

17And the settle shall be fourteen cubits long and fourteen broad in the four squares thereof; and the border about it shall be half a cubit; and the bottom thereof shall be a cubit about; and his stairs shall look toward the east.

18And he said unto me, Son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; These are the ordinances of the altar in the day when they shall make it, to offer burnt offerings thereon, and to sprinkle blood thereon.

19And thou shalt give to the priests the Levites that be of the seed of Zadok, which approach unto me, to minister unto me, saith the Lord GOD, a young bullock for a sin offering.

20And thou shalt take of the blood thereof, and put it on the four horns of it, and on the four corners of the settle, and upon the border round about: thus shalt thou cleanse and purge it.

21Thou shalt take the bullock also of the sin offering, and he shall burn it in the appointed place of the house, without the sanctuary.

22And on the second day thou shalt offer a kid of the goats without blemish for a sin offering; and they shall cleanse the altar, as they did cleanse it with the bullock.

23When thou hast made an end of cleansing it, thou shalt offer a young bullock without blemish, and a ram out of the flock without blemish.

24And thou shalt offer them before the LORD, and the priests shall cast salt upon them, and they shall offer them up for a burnt offering unto the LORD.

25Seven days shalt thou prepare every day a goat for a sin offering: they shall also prepare a young bullock, and a ram out of the flock, without blemish.

26Seven days shall they purge the altar and purify it; and they shall consecrate themselves.

27And when these days are expired, it shall be, that upon the eighth day, and so forward, the priests shall make your burnt offerings upon the altar, and your peace offerings; and I will accept you, saith the Lord GOD.

1Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east.

2And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shined with his glory.

3And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city; and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face.

4And the glory of Jehovah came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east.

5And the Spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of Jehovah filled the house.

6And I heard one speaking unto me out of the house; and a man stood by me.

7And he said unto me, Son of man, [this is] the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever. And the house of Israel shall no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, and by the dead bodies of their kings [in] their high places;

8in their setting of their threshold by my threshold, and their door-post beside my door-post, and there was [but] the wall between me and them; and they have defiled my holy name by their abominations which they have committed: wherefore I have consumed them in mine anger.

9Now let them put away their whoredom, and the dead bodies of their kings, far from me; and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever.

10Thou, son of man, show the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and let them measure the pattern.

11And if they be ashamed of all that they have done, make known unto them the form of the house, and the fashion thereof, and the egresses thereof, and the entrances thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the laws thereof; and write it in their sight; that they may keep the whole form thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and do them.

12This is the law of the house: upon the top of the mountain the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house.

13And these are the measures of the altar by cubits (the cubit is a cubit and a handbreadth): the bottom shall be a cubit, and the breadth a cubit, and the border thereof by the edge thereof round about a span; and this shall be the base of the altar.

14And from the bottom upon the ground to the lower ledge shall be two cubits, and the breadth one cubit; and from the lesser ledge to the greater ledge shall be four cubits, and the breadth a cubit.

15And the upper altar shall be four cubits; and from the altar hearth and upward there shall be four horns.

16And the altar hearth shall be twelve [cubits] long by twelve broad, square in the four sides thereof.

17And the ledge shall be fourteen [cubits] long by fourteen broad in the four sides thereof; and the border about it shall be half a cubit; and the bottom thereof shall be a cubit round about; and the steps thereof shall look toward the east.

18And he said unto me, Son of man, thus saith the Lord Jehovah: These are the ordinances of the altar in the day when they shall make it, to offer burnt-offerings thereon, and to sprinkle blood thereon.

19Thou shalt give to the priests the Levites that are of the seed of Zadok, who are near unto me, to minister unto me, saith the Lord Jehovah, a young bullock for a sin-offering.

20And thou shalt take of the blood thereof, and put it on the four horns of it, and on the four corners of the ledge, and upon the border round about: thus shalt thou cleanse it and make atonement for it.

21Thou shalt also take the bullock of the sin-offering, and it shall be burnt in the appointed place of the house, without the sanctuary.

22And on the second day thou shalt offer a he-goat without blemish for a sin-offering; and they shall cleanse the altar, as they did cleanse it with the bullock.

23When thou hast made an end of cleansing it, thou shalt offer a young bullock without blemish, and a ram out of the flock without blemish.

24And thou shalt bring them near before Jehovah, and the priests shall cast salt upon them, and they shall offer them up for a burnt-offering unto Jehovah.

25Seven days shalt thou prepare every day a goat for a sin-offering: they shall also prepare a young bullock, and a ram out of the flock, without blemish.

26Seven days shall they make atonement for the altar and purify it; so shall they consecrate it.

27And when they have accomplished the days, it shall be that upon the eighth day, and forward, the priests shall make your burnt-offerings upon the altar, and your peace-offerings; and I will accept you, saith the Lord Jehovah.

1Then he brought me to the gate that faced toward the east.

2I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east; the sound was like that of rushing water, and the earth radiated his glory.

3It was like the vision I saw when he came to destroy the city, and the vision I saw by the Kebar River. I threw myself face down.

4The glory of the Lord came into the temple by way of the gate that faces east.

5Then a wind lifted me up and brought me to the inner court; I watched the glory of the Lord filling the temple.

6I heard someone speaking to me from the temple, while the man was standing beside me.

7He said to me: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet, where I will live among the people of Israel forever. The house of Israel will no longer profane my holy name, neither they nor their kings, by their spiritual prostitution or by the pillars of their kings set up when they die.

8When they placed their threshold by my threshold and their doorpost by my doorpost, with only the wall between me and them, they profaned my holy name by the abominable deeds they committed. So I consumed them in my anger.

9Now they must put away their spiritual prostitution and the pillars of their kings far from me, and then I will live among them forever.

10“As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel, so that they will be ashamed of their sins and measure the pattern.

11When they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its pattern, its exits and entrances, and its whole design—all its statutes, its entire design, and all its laws; write it all down in their sight, so that they may observe its entire design and all its statutes and do them.

12“This is the law of the temple: The entire area on top of the mountain all around will be most holy. Indeed, this is the law of the temple.

13“And these are the measurements of the altar: Its base is 1¾ feet high and 1¾ feet wide, and its border 9 inches on its edge. This is to be the height of the altar.

14From the base of the ground to the lower ledge is 3½ feet, and the width 1¾ feet; and from the smaller ledge to the larger ledge, 7 feet, and the width 1¾ feet;

15and the altar hearth, 7 feet, and from the altar hearth four horns projecting upward.

16Now the altar hearth is a perfect square, 21 feet long and 21 feet wide.

17The ledge is 24½ feet long and 24½ feet wide on four sides; the border around it is 10½ inches, and its surrounding base 1¾ feet. Its steps face east.”

18Then he said to me: “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: These are the statutes of the altar: On the day it is built to offer up burnt offerings on it and to sprinkle blood on it,

19you will give a young bull for a sin offering to the Levitical priests who are descended from Zadok, who approach me to minister to me, declares the Sovereign Lord.

20You will take some of its blood and place it on the four horns of the altar, on the four corners of the ledge, and on the border all around; you will purify it and make atonement for it.

21You will also take the bull for the sin offering, and it will be burned in the appointed place in the temple, outside the sanctuary.

22“On the second day, you will offer a male goat without blemish for a sin offering. They will purify the altar just as they purified it with the bull.

23When you have finished purifying it, you will offer an unblemished young bull and an unblemished ram from the flock.

24You will present them before the Lord, and the priests will scatter salt on them and offer them up as a burnt offering to the Lord.

25“For seven days you will provide every day a goat for a sin offering; a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without blemish, will be provided.

26For seven days they will make atonement for the altar and cleanse it, so they will consecrate it.

27When the prescribed period is over, on the eighth day and thereafter the priests will offer up on the altar your burnt offerings and your peace offerings; I will accept you, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

1Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looks toward the east.

2Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth was illuminated with his glory.

3It was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city; and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell on my face.

4Yahweh’s glory came into the house by the way of the gate which faces toward the east.

5The Spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and behold, Yahweh’s glory filled the house.

6I heard one speaking to me out of the house; and a man stood by me.

7He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell among the children of Israel forever. The house of Israel will no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their prostitution, and by the dead bodies of their kings in their high places;

8in their setting of their threshold by my threshold, and their door post beside my door post. There was a wall between me and them; and they have defiled my holy name by their abominations which they have committed. Ttherefore I have consumed them in my anger.

9Now let them put away their prostitution, and the dead bodies of their kings, far from me. Then I will dwell among them forever.

10“You, son of man, show the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and let them measure the pattern.

11If they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the form of the house, and its fashion, and its exits, and its entrances, and all its forms, and all its ordinances, and all its forms, and all its laws; and write it in their sight; that they may keep the whole form of it, and all its ordinances, and do them.

12“This is the law of the house. On the top of the mountain the whole limit around it shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house.

13“These are the measurements of the altar by cubits (the cubit is a cubit and a hand width): the bottom shall be a cubit, and the width a cubit, and its border around its edge a span; and this shall be the base of the altar.

14From the bottom on the ground to the lower ledge shall be two cubits, and the width one cubit; and from the lesser ledge to the greater ledge shall be four cubits, and the width a cubit.

15The upper altar shall be four cubits; and from the altar hearth and upward there shall be four horns.

16The altar hearth shall be twelve cubits long by twelve wide, square in its four sides.

17The ledge shall be fourteen cubits long by fourteen wide in its four sides; and the border about it shall be half a cubit; and its bottom shall be a cubit around; and its steps shall look toward the east.”

18He said to me, “Son of man, thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘These are the ordinances of the altar in the day when they make it, to offer burnt offerings on it, and to sprinkle blood on it.

19You shall give to the priests the Levites who are of the offspring of Zadok, who are near to me, to minister to me,’ says the Lord Yahweh, ‘a young bull for a sin offering.

20You shall take of its blood, and put it on its four horns, and on the four corners of the ledge, and on the border all around. You shall cleanse it and make atonement for it that way.

21You shall also take the bull of the sin offering, and it shall be burned in the appointed place of the house, outside of the sanctuary.

22“On the second day you shall offer a male goat without defect for a sin offering; and they shall cleanse the altar, as they cleansed it with the bull.

23When you have finished cleansing it, you shall offer a young bull without defect, and a ram out of the flock without defect.

24You shall bring them near to Yahweh, and the priests shall cast salt on them, and they shall offer them up for a burnt offering to Yahweh.

25“Seven days you shall prepare every day a goat for a sin offering. They shall also prepare a young bull, and a ram out of the flock, without defect.

26Seven days shall they make atonement for the altar and purify it. So shall they consecrate it.

27When they have accomplished the days, it shall be that on the eighth day, and forward, the priests shall make your burnt offerings on the altar, and your peace offerings. Then I will accept you,’ says the Lord Yahweh.”

Summary

THE GLORY RETURNS. In the climactic moment of Ezekiel's entire prophecy, the glory of the LORD — the same glory that departed from Jerusalem through the east gate in chapters 10-11 — returns from the east and fills the new temple. God declares "this is the place of my throne... where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever." The chapter then provides the dimensions and consecration instructions for the great altar of burnt offering.

Authorship & Background

Author: Ezekiel son of Buzi (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Classification: Prophetic Vision — The Return of God's Glory Key Themes: The glory of God returning, permanent divine indwelling, God's throne established forever, the altar of burnt offering dimensions and consecration, the call to repentance through the vision of holiness
Historical Context: This is the moment everything in Ezekiel has been building toward. In chapters 8-11, Ezekiel witnessed the most devastating event in Israel's spiritual history: the glory of the LORD departing from the temple — first from the cherubim to the threshold (9:3), then to the east gate (10:19), then to the mountain east of the city (11:23). God LEFT His own house because of Israel's abominations.
Now, after 32 chapters of judgment, exile, restoration promises, Gog's defeat, and the new temple's measurements — the glory RETURNS. And it comes from THE EAST (v.2) — the same direction it departed. God comes back the way He left. The exile of God's presence is over.
The theological weight of this chapter cannot be overstated. For Ezekiel — a priest who never served in a functioning temple, an exile who watched God leave — this is EVERYTHING. God's presence returns. God's throne is established. God says "FOR EVER." The cycle of departure and return ends with permanent, irreversible indwelling.
The chapter also provides the altar dimensions and a seven-day consecration ceremony (vv.13-27), establishing that restored relationship requires ongoing atonement. The glory returns, but the altar ensures the relationship is maintained through sacrifice.
Structure:
  • The Glory Returns from the East (vv.1-5)
  • God's Voice: "This Is My Throne — Forever" (vv.6-9)
  • Command to Show Israel the Temple Plan (vv.10-12)
  • The Altar of Burnt Offering: Dimensions (vv.13-17)
  • The Altar Consecration: Seven Days (vv.18-27)

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
  • Charles Spurgeon: "The return of God's glory is the answer to every prayer, the fulfillment of every promise, the resolution of every exile. When God comes back, everything comes right. There is no problem that the presence of God does not solve, no darkness that His glory does not dispel, no exile that His return does not end."

Reflection

  • 1. THE GLORY RETURNS (vv.2-5). If you have experienced a season where God felt absent — where His presence seemed to have departed — this chapter is your promise. God COMES BACK. He returns the way He left. And when He returns, He comes to STAY. Whatever "east gate" He departed through, watch that same direction. He's coming home.
  • 2. God returns as KING, not guest (v.7). "The place of my THRONE." God does not ask permission to re-enter. He does not negotiate terms. He claims His throne. In your life, is God a welcome guest or an enthroned King? There is a difference. Guests leave. Kings reign.
  • 3. "For ever" — God's presence is permanent (v.7). He will not leave again. He will not be driven out by our failures. In Christ, believers have this promise: "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5). The Spirit's indwelling is God's glory filling YOUR temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). And He says: FOR EVER.
  • 4. Holiness and presence are inseparable (v.9). "Put away their whoredom... and I will dwell." God does not compromise on holiness to maintain presence. Nor does He withdraw presence to punish. He offers both: "Be holy, and I will be THERE." The two go together. You cannot have one without the other.
  • 5. The altar must be consecrated before service begins (vv.18-27). Seven days. Not rushed, not skipped. Before you serve God, let Him prepare you. Before you offer anything to God, let God sanctify the place of offering. Ministry without consecration is presumption.
