Ezekiel — Chapter 41

1Afterward he brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breadth of the tabernacle.

2And the breadth of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits: and the breadth, twenty cubits.

3Then went he inward, and measured the post of the door, two cubits; and the door, six cubits; and the breadth of the door, seven cubits.

4So he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits; and the breadth, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said unto me, This is the most holy place.

5After he measured the wall of the house, six cubits; and the breadth of every side chamber, four cubits, round about the house on every side.

6And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.

7And there was an enlarging, and a winding about still upward to the side chambers: for the winding about of the house went still upward round about the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.

8I saw also the height of the house round about: the foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits.

9The thickness of the wall, which was for the side chamber without, was five cubits: and that which was left was the place of the side chambers that were within.

10And between the chambers was the wideness of twenty cubits round about the house on every side.

11And the doors of the side chambers were toward the place that was left, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south: and the breadth of the place that was left was five cubits round about.

12Now the building that was before the separate place at the end toward the west was seventy cubits broad; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick round about, and the length thereof ninety cubits.

13So he measured the house, an hundred cubits long; and the separate place, and the building, with the walls thereof, an hundred cubits long;

14Also the breadth of the face of the house, and of the separate place toward the east, an hundred cubits.

15And he measured the length of the building over against the separate place which was behind it, and the galleries thereof on the one side and on the other side, an hundred cubits, with the inner temple, and the porches of the court;

16The door posts, and the narrow windows, and the galleries round about on their three stories, over against the door, cieled with wood round about, and from the ground up to the windows, and the windows were covered;

17To that above the door, even unto the inner house, and without, and by all the wall round about within and without, by measure.

18And it was made with cherubims and palm trees, so that a palm tree was between a cherub and a cherub; and every cherub had two faces;

19So that the face of a man was toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side: it was made through all the house round about.

20From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm trees made, and on the wall of the temple.

21The posts of the temple were squared, and the face of the sanctuary; the appearance of the one as the appearance of the other.

22The altar of wood was three cubits high, and the length thereof two cubits; and the corners thereof, and the length thereof, and the walls thereof, were of wood: and he said unto me, This is the table that is before the LORD.

23And the temple and the sanctuary had two doors.

24And the doors had two leaves apiece, two turning leaves; two leaves for the one door, and two leaves for the other door.

25And there were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubims and palm trees, like as were made upon the walls; and there were thick planks upon the face of the porch without.

26And there were narrow windows and palm trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the porch, and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks.

1And he brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breadth of the tabernacle.

2And the breadth of the entrance was ten cubits; and the sides of the entrance were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits, and the breadth, twenty cubits.

3Then went he inward, and measured each post of the entrance, two cubits; and the entrance, six cubits; and the breadth of the entrance, seven cubits.

4And he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits, and the breadth, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said unto me, This is the most holy place.

5Then he measured the wall of the house, six cubits; and the breadth of every side-chamber, four cubits, round about the house on every side.

6And the side-chambers were in three stories, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which belonged to the house for the side-chambers round about, that they might have hold [therein], and not have hold in the wall of the house.

7And the side-chambers were broader as they encompassed [the house] higher and higher; for the encompassing of the house went higher and higher round about the house: therefore the breadth of the house [continued] upward; and so one went up [from] the lowest [chamber] to the highest by the middle [chamber].

8I saw also that the house had a raised basement round about: the foundations of the side-chambers were a full reed of six great cubits.

9The thickness of the wall, which was for the side-chambers, on the outside, was five cubits: and that which was left was the place of the side-chambers that belonged to the house.

10And between the chambers was a breadth of twenty cubits round about the house on every side.

11And the doors of the side-chambers were toward [the place] that was left, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south: and the breadth of the place that was left was five cubits round about.

12And the building that was before the separate place at the side toward the west was seventy cubits broad; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick round about, and the length thereof ninety cubits.

13So he measured the house, a hundred cubits long; and the separate place, and the building, with the walls thereof, a hundred cubits long;

14also the breadth of the face of the house, and of the separate place toward the east, a hundred cubits.

15And he measured the length of the building before the separate place which was at the back thereof, and the galleries thereof on the one side and on the other side, a hundred cubits; and the inner temple, and the porches of the court;

16the thresholds, and the closed windows, and the galleries round about on their three stories, over against the threshold, ceiled with wood round about, and [from] the ground up to the windows, (now the windows were covered),

17to [the space] above the door, even unto the inner house, and without, and by all the wall round about within and without, by measure.

18And it was made with cherubim and palm-trees; and a palm-tree was between cherub and cherub, and every cherub had two faces;

19so that there was the face of a man toward the palm-tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm-tree on the other side. [thus was it] made through all the house round about:

20from the ground unto above the door were cherubim and palm-trees made: thus was the wall of the temple.

21As for the temple, the door-posts were squared; and as for the face of the sanctuary, the appearance [thereof] was as the appearance [of the temple].

22The altar was of wood, three cubits high, and the length thereof two cubits; and the corners thereof, and the length thereof, and the walls thereof, were of wood: and he said unto me, This is the table that is before Jehovah.

23And the temple and the sanctuary had two doors.

24And the doors had two leaves [apiece], two turning leaves: two [leaves] for the one door, and two leaves for the other.

25And there were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubim and palm-trees, like as were made upon the walls; and there was a threshold of wood upon the face of the porch without.

26And there were closed windows and palm-trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the porch: thus were the side-chambers of the house, and the thresholds.

1Then he brought me to the outer sanctuary and measured the jambs; the jambs were 10½ feet wide on each side.

2The width of the entrance was 17½ feet, and the sides of the entrance were 8¾ feet on each side. He measured the length of the outer sanctuary as 70 feet and its width as 35 feet.

3Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance as 3½ feet, the entrance as 10½ feet, and the width of the entrance as 12¼ feet.

4Then he measured its length as 35 feet and its width as 35 feet, before the outer sanctuary. He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.”

5Then he measured the wall of the temple as 10½ feet and the width of the side chambers as 7 feet, all around the temple.

6The side chambers were in three stories, one above the other, 30 in each story. There were offsets in the wall all around to serve as supports for the side chambers, so that the supports were not in the wall of the temple.

7The side chambers surrounding the temple were wider at each successive story, for the structure surrounding the temple went up story by story all around the temple. For this reason the width of the temple increased as it went up, and one went up from the lowest story to the highest by the way of the middle story.

8I saw that the temple had a raised platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers were a full measuring stick of 10½ feet high.

9The width of the outer wall of the side chambers was 8¾ feet, and the open area between the side chambers of the temple

10and the chambers of the court was 35 feet in width all around the temple on every side.

11There were entrances from the side chambers toward the open area, one entrance toward the north, and another entrance toward the south; the width of the open area was 8¾ feet all around.

12The building that was facing the temple courtyard at the west side was 122½ feet wide; the wall of the building was 8¾ feet thick all around, and its length 157½ feet.

13Then he measured the temple as 175 feet long, the courtyard of the temple and the building and its walls as 175 feet long,

14and also the width of the front of the temple and the courtyard on the east as 175 feet.

15Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, with its galleries on either side as 175 feet. The interior of the outer sanctuary and the porch of the court,

16as well as the thresholds, narrow windows, and galleries all around on three sides facing the threshold, were paneled with wood all around, from the ground up to the windows (now the windows were covered),

17to the space above the entrance, to the inner room, and on the outside and on all the walls in the inner room and outside, by measurement.

18It was made with cherubim and decorative palm trees, with a palm tree between each cherub. Each cherub had two faces:

19a human face toward the palm tree on one side and a lion’s face toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved on the whole temple all around;

20from the ground to the area above the entrance, cherubim and decorative palm trees were carved on the wall of the outer sanctuary.

21The doorposts of the outer sanctuary were square. In front of the sanctuary one doorpost looked just like the other.

22The altar was of wood, 5¼ feet high, with its length 3½ feet; its corners, its length, and its walls were of wood. He said to me, “This is the table that is before the Lord.”

23The outer sanctuary and the inner sanctuary each had a double door.

24Each of the doors had two leaves, two swinging leaves; two leaves for one door and two leaves for the other.

25On the doors of the outer sanctuary were carved cherubim and palm trees, like those carved on the walls, and there was a canopy of wood on the front of the outside porch.

26There were narrow windows and decorative palm trees on either side of the side walls of the porch; this is what the side chambers of the temple and the canopies were like.

1He brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits wide on the one side, and six cubits wide on the other side, which was the width of the tent.

2The width of the entrance was ten cubits; and the sides of the entrance were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side. He measured its length, forty cubits, and the width, twenty cubits.

3Then he went inward and measured each post of the entrance, two cubits; and the entrance, six cubits; and the width of the entrance, seven cubits.

4He measured its length, twenty cubits, and the width, twenty cubits, before the temple. He said to me, “This is the most holy place.”

5Then he measured the wall of the house, six cubits; and the width of every side room, four cubits, all around the house on every side.

6The side rooms were in three stories, one over another, and thirty in order. They entered into the wall which belonged to the house for the side rooms all around, that they might be supported, and not penetrate the wall of the house.

7The side rooms were wider on the higher levels, because the walls were narrower at the higher levels. Therefore the width of the house increased upward; and so one went up from the lowest level to the highest through the middle level.

8I saw also that the house had a raised base all around. The foundations of the side rooms were a full reed of six great cubits.

9The thickness of the wall, which was for the side rooms, on the outside, was five cubits. That which was left was the place of the side rooms that belonged to the house.

10Between the rooms was a width of twenty cubits around the house on every side.

11The doors of the side rooms were toward an open area that was left, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south. The width of the open area was five cubits all around.

12The building that was before the separate place at the side toward the west was seventy cubits wide; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length ninety cubits.

13So he measured the house, one hundred cubits long; and the separate place, and the building, with its walls, one hundred cubits long;

14also the width of the face of the house, and of the separate place toward the east, one hundred cubits.

15He measured the length of the building before the separate place which was at its back, and its galleries on the one side and on the other side, one hundred cubits from the inner temple, and the porches of the court

16the thresholds, and the closed windows, and the galleries around on their three stories, over against the threshold, with wood ceilings all around, and from the ground up to the windows, (now the windows were covered),

17to the space above the door, even to the inner house, and outside, and by all the wall all around inside and outside, by measure.

18It was made with cherubim and palm trees. A palm tree was between cherub and cherub, and every cherub had two faces;

19so that there was the face of a man toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side. It was made like this through all the house all around.

20Cherubim and palm trees were made from the ground to above the door. The wall of the temple was like this.

21As for the temple, the door posts were squared. As for the face of the sanctuary, its appearance was as the appearance of the temple.

22The altar was of wood, three cubits high, and its length two cubits. Its corners, its length, and its walls were of wood. He said to me, “This is the table that is before Yahweh.”

23The temple and the sanctuary had two doors.

24The doors had two leaves each, two turning leaves: two for the one door, and two leaves for the other.

25There were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubim and palm trees, like those made on the walls. There was a threshold of wood on the face of the porch outside.

26There were closed windows and palm trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the porch. This is how the side rooms of the house and the thresholds were arranged.

Summary

The angelic guide leads Ezekiel deeper into the temple, measuring the inner sanctuary: the holy place and the most holy place. The dimensions, wall decorations (cherubim and palm trees), the wooden altar, side chambers, and the building's western structure are all precisely detailed. This is the heart of God's dwelling — the place where heaven meets earth.

Authorship & Background

Author: Ezekiel son of Buzi (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Classification: Prophetic Vision — Inner Temple Architecture Key Themes: The holy place and most holy place dimensions, the sacred progression from outer to inner, cherubim and palm tree decorations symbolizing Eden restored, the wooden altar as "the table before the LORD"
Historical Context: Having measured the outer gates and courts (ch. 40), the guide now takes Ezekiel into the temple building itself — the nave (holy place) and the inner room (most holy place). This parallels the tabernacle and Solomon's temple structure, but with significant differences. There is no ark of the covenant mentioned, no mercy seat described — instead, the focus is on God's presence filling the space itself (which happens in ch. 43).
The decorative program — alternating cherubim and palm trees — is deeply significant. Cherubim guarded the entrance to Eden (Genesis 3:24). Palm trees represent righteous flourishing (Psalm 92:12). Together they declare: this temple is Paradise restored, Eden reopened, humanity welcomed back into God's immediate presence.
Notable: the guide does not enter the most holy place (v.3-4). Only the measurements are given — "he" measured it. The deep holiness of that innermost space is maintained. Even in vision, the sacred boundary is respected.
Structure:
  • The Vestibule of the Temple Proper (vv.1-2)
  • The Most Holy Place Measured (vv.3-4)
  • The Side Chambers: Three Stories (vv.5-11)
  • The Building on the West Side (vv.12)
  • Overall Measurements of the Complex (vv.13-15a)
  • Interior Decorations: Cherubim and Palm Trees (vv.15b-21)
  • The Wooden Altar: "The Table Before the LORD" (vv.22)
  • The Double Doors of Holy Place and Most Holy Place (vv.23-26)

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
  • Charles Spurgeon: "The cherubim and palm trees upon the temple walls tell us that where God dwells, Paradise is restored. Eden was lost by sin; it is regained by grace. The flaming sword is sheathed, the tree of life flourishes again, and the way to God stands open for every believing soul."

Reflection

  • 1. There is a sacred progression inward (vv.1-4). Outer court → inner court → holy place → most holy place. Each step inward is more restricted, more holy, more intimate. Your walk with God has the same pattern — there are always deeper levels of intimacy to enter. Are you pressing in, or camped in the outer court?
  • 2. The cherubim and palms declare: Eden is restored (v.18). The guards of Paradise now decorate the temple walls — not blocking access but CELEBRATING it. In Christ, the way back to God's presence is open. "The veil was rent in twain" (Matthew 27:51). You have access to the Most Holy Place.
  • 3. God calls the altar "the table before the LORD" (v.22). It is both altar (sacrifice) and table (fellowship). At the cross, sacrifice and communion meet. The same act that atones for sin also invites us to dine with God. Revelation 3:20: "I will come in to him, and will sup with him."
  • 4. Even in vision, the most holy place is respected (v.3). The guide does not casually enter. Holiness is never casual. While we have bold access through Christ (Hebrews 10:19), we never lose REVERENCE. Familiarity with God should not breed casualness about God.
