1Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
2The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
3And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
4And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
5By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
6And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.
7And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.
8And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.
10And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
11Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,
12And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.
13And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,
14And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.
15And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth,
16And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite,
17And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,
18And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.
19And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha.
20These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.
21Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born.
22The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.
23And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.
24And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber.
25And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.
26And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazar-maveth, and Jerah,
27And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,
28And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,
29And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.
30And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east.
31These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.
32These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.
1Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, [namely], of Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
2The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
3And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
4And the sons of Javan: Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
5Of these were the isles of the nations divided in their lands, every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
6And the sons of Ham: Cush, and Mizraim, and Put, and Canaan.
7And the sons of Cush: Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba, and Dedan.
8And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
9He was a mighty hunter before Jehovah: wherefore it is said, Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before Jehovah.
10And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
11Out of that land he went forth into Assyria, and builded Nineveh, and Rehoboth-ir, and Calah,
12and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (the same is the great city).
13And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,
14and Pathrusim, and Casluhim (whence went forth the Philistines), and Caphtorim.
15And Canaan begat Sidon his first-born, and Heth,
16and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,
17and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,
18and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanite spread abroad.
19And the border of the Canaanite was from Sidon, as thou goest toward Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, unto Lasha.
20These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, in their nations.
21And unto Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, to him also were children born.
22The sons of Shem: Elam, and Asshur, and Arpachshad, and Lud, and Aram.
23And the sons of Aram: Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.
24And Arpachshad begat Shelah; and Shelah begat Eber.
25And unto Eber were born two sons: The name of the one was Peleg. For in his days was the earth divided. And his brother`s name was Joktan.
26And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,
27and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,
28and Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,
29and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.
30And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest toward Sephar, the mountain of the east.
31These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.
32These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and of these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.
1This is the account of Noah’s sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.
2The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
3The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
4The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim, and the Dodanim.
5From these the coastlands of the nations were separated into their lands, every one according to its language, according to their families, by their nations.
6The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
7The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
8Cush was the father of Nimrod; he began to be a valiant warrior on the earth.
9He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. (That is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.”)
10The primary regions of his kingdom were Babel, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh in the land of Shinar.
11From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah,
12and Resen, which is between Nineveh and the great city Calah.
13Mizraim was the father of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites,
14Pathrusites, Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came), and Caphtorites.
15Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, Heth,
16the Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,
17Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,
18Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. Eventually the families of the Canaanites were scattered
19and the borders of Canaan extended from Sidon all the way to Gerar as far as Gaza, and all the way to Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha.
20These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and by their nations.
21And sons were also born to Shem (the older brother of Japheth), the father of all the sons of Eber.
22The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram.
23The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
24Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber.
25Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg because in his days the earth was divided, and his brother’s name was Joktan.
26Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
28Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
29Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.
30Their dwelling place was from Mesha all the way to Sephar in the eastern hills.
31These are the sons of Shem according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and according to their nations.
32These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations, and from these the nations spread over the earth after the flood.
1Now this is the history of the generations of the sons of Noah and of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.
2The sons of Japheth were: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
3The sons of Gomer were: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
4The sons of Javan were: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
5Of these were the islands of the nations divided in their lands, everyone after his language, after their families, in their nations.
6The sons of Ham were: Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
7The sons of Cush were: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were: Sheba and Dedan.
8Cush became the father of Nimrod. He began to be a mighty one in the earth.
9He was a mighty hunter before Yahweh. Therefore it is said, “like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before Yahweh”.
10The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
11Out of that land he went into Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah,
12and Resen between Nineveh and the great city Calah.
13Mizraim became the father of Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,
14Pathrusim, Casluhim (which the Philistines descended from), and Caphtorim.
15Canaan became the father of Sidon (his firstborn), Heth,
16the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,
17the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,
18the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad.
19The border of the Canaanites was from Sidon—as you go toward Gerar—to Gaza—as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim—to Lasha.
20These are the sons of Ham, after their families, according to their languages, in their lands and their nations.
21Children were also born to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth.
22The sons of Shem were: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.
23The sons of Aram were: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
24Arpachshad became the father of Shelah. Shelah became the father of Eber.
25To Eber were born two sons. The name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided. His brother’s name was Joktan.
26Joktan became the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
28Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
29Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.
30Their dwelling extended from Mesha, as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east.
31These are the sons of Shem, by their families, according to their languages, lands, and nations.
32These are the families of the sons of Noah, by their generations, according to their nations. The nations divided from these in the earth after the flood.
Summary
The Table of Nations traces Noah's descendants — Shem, Ham, and Japheth — as they spread across the earth after the flood.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- The Table of Nations maps the spread of humanity from Noah's three sons: Japheth (Indo-European peoples, Anatolia/Europe), Ham (Africa, Canaan, Mesopotamia), and Shem (Semitic peoples, the Near East).
- Nimrod's kingdom includes Babel, Erech (Uruk), Accad, and Calneh in Shinar (Babylonia) and Nineveh in Assyria (vv.10-12) — all in modern Iraq.
- This chapter provides the geographical backdrop for the entire Old Testament.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers the Table of Nations, Nimrod, the three family lines, and the theological significance of all nations from one source.
- Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "One Blood" (referencing Acts 17:26 and Genesis 10) "God hath made of one blood all nations — all from Noah, all from Adam. There is one human race, one human family. The Table of Nations in Genesis 10 is God's family tree for all humanity. Every person you meet is your relative — however distant. This destroys racism at its root: we are all one family, all bearing one image, all needing one Savior."
Reflection
- 1. "By these were the nations divided" (v.32). All humanity comes from one family. How does this shape your view of people from other nations, cultures, and ethnicities? We are all one family.
- 2. Nimrod built Babel — the beginning of organized rebellion against God (vv.8-10). Where do you see "Babel" today — human systems built in defiance of God? Are you participating in them or standing apart?
- 3. God knows every nation, every family, every person. This chapter shows His awareness of all peoples. He is not the God of one nation but of all nations. Does your faith reflect this global perspective?
- 4. From these 70 nations, God will call ONE man (Abraham, ch.12) to bless ALL nations. God's plan is always particular (one man, one nation) for the sake of the universal (all peoples). How are you part of God's plan to bless all nations?
- 5. The Messianic line runs through Shem (v.21). God is already narrowing the focus toward the Redeemer promised in 3:15. Can you trace God's faithfulness through the generations?
