Genesis — Chapter 38

1And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

3And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

4And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

5And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

6And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

8And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

11Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

12And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

16And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

18And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.

21Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

22And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

23And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

24And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

26And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

27And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first,

29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

30And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

1And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. And he took her, and went in unto her.

3And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

4And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

5And she yet again bare a son, and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

6And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar.

7And Er, Judah`s first-born, was wicked in the sight of Jehovah. And Jehovah slew him.

8And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother`s wife, and perform the duty of a husband`s brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother`s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.

10And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and he slew him also.

11Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow in thy father`s house, till Shelah my son be grown up; for he said, Lest he also die, like his brethren. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father`s house.

12And in process of time Shua`s daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheep-shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnah to shear his sheep.

14And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she had covered her face.

16And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Come, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee: for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17And he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

18And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet and thy cord, and thy staff that is in thy hand. And he gave them to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19And she arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman`s hand: but he found her not.

21Then he asked the men of her place, saying, Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the wayside? And they said, There hath been no prostitute here.

22And he returned to Judah, and said, I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, There hath been no prostitute here.

23And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be put to shame: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

24And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.

26And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

27And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself? Therefore his name was called Perez.

30And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah.

1At that time Judah left his brothers and stayed with an Adullamite man named Hirah.

2There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. Judah acquired her as a wife and slept with her.

3She became pregnant and had a son. Judah named him Er.

4She became pregnant again and had another son, whom she named Onan.

5Then she had yet another son, whom she named Shelah. She gave birth to him in Kezib.

6Judah acquired a wife for Er his firstborn; her name was Tamar.

7But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was evil in the Lord’s sight, so the Lord killed him.

8Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her so that you may raise up a descendant for your brother.”

9But Onan knew that the child would not be considered his. So whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he wasted his emission on the ground so as not to give his brother a descendant.

10What he did was evil in the Lord’s sight, so the Lord killed him too.

11Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s house until Shelah my son grows up.” For he thought, “I don’t want him to die like his brothers.” So Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

12After some time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. After Judah was consoled, he left for Timnah to visit his sheepshearers, along with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13Tamar was told, “Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

14So she removed her widow’s clothes and covered herself with a veil. She wrapped herself and sat at the entrance to Enaim which is on the way to Timnah. (She did this because she saw that she had not been given to Shelah as a wife, even though he had now grown up.)

15When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face.

16He turned aside to her along the road and said, “Come, please, I want to sleep with you.” (He did not realize it was his daughter-in-law.) She asked, “What will you give me so that you may sleep with me?”

17He replied, “I’ll send you a young goat from the flock.” She asked, “Will you give me a pledge until you send it?”

18He said, “What pledge should I give you?” She replied, “Your seal, your cord, and the staff that’s in your hand.” So he gave them to her, then slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

19She left immediately, removed her veil, and put on her widow’s clothes.

20Then Judah had his friend Hirah the Adullamite take a young goat to get back from the woman the items he had given in pledge, but Hirah could not find her.

21He asked the men who were there, “Where is the cult prostitute who was at Enaim by the road?” But they replied, “There has been no cult prostitute here.”

22So he returned to Judah and said, “I couldn’t find her. Moreover, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no cult prostitute here.’”

23Judah said, “Let her keep the things for herself. Otherwise we will appear to be dishonest. I did indeed send this young goat, but you couldn’t find her.”

24After three months Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has turned to prostitution, and as a result she has become pregnant.” Judah said, “Bring her out and let her be burned!”

25While they were bringing her out, she sent word to her father-in-law: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these belong.” Then she said, “Identify the one to whom the seal, cord, and staff belong.”

26Judah recognized them and said, “She is more upright than I am, because I wouldn’t give her to Shelah my son.” He was not physically intimate with her again.

27When it was time for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.

28While she was giving birth, one child put out his hand, and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”

29But then he drew back his hand, and his brother came out before him. She said, “How you have broken out of the womb!” So he was named Perez.

30Afterward his brother came out—the one who had the scarlet thread on his hand—and he was named Zerah.

1At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2Judah saw there a certain Canaanite man named Shua’s daughter. He took her, and went in to her.

3She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.

4She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.

5She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.

6Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

7Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. Yahweh killed him.

8Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”

9Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.

10The thing which he did was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and he killed him also.

11Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up”; for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

12After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.

13Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

14She took off her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.

15When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

16He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”

17He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”

18He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.

19She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.

21Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

22He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”

23Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”

24About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”

25When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man, whose these are, I am with child.” She also said, “Please discern whose are these—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”

26Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.

27In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.

28When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”

29As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.

30Afterward his brother came out, that had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.

Summary

Judah's sins are exposed — he fails his daughter-in-law Tamar, who disguises herself to continue the family line, and Judah acknowledges his wrong.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses (see Chapter 1 notes for full authorship details).
Historical Context: Chapter 38 interrupts the Joseph narrative with the story of Judah and Tamar — seemingly out of place but theologically essential. It shows Judah's moral decline (marrying a Canaanite, visiting a prostitute) while Joseph maintains integrity (ch.39). More importantly, it establishes the Messianic line: through Judah and Tamar's son Perez comes David and ultimately Christ (Ruth 4:18-22, Matthew 1:3). God works through scandalous, broken situations to accomplish His redemptive purposes.
Judah's Family (vv.1-11): Judah separates from his brothers (v.1). Marries a Canaanite (v.2). Three sons: Er, Onan, Shelah (vv.3-5). Er marries Tamar but is killed by God for wickedness (vv.6-7). Onan refuses levirate duty — killed (vv.8-10). Judah withholds Shelah from Tamar out of fear (v.11).
Tamar's Deception (vv.12-23): Judah's wife dies (v.12). Tamar, denied her rights, disguises herself as a prostitute (vv.13-14). Judah sleeps with her, leaving his signet, cord, and staff as pledge (vv.15-18). She conceives (v.18).
Judah's Confrontation (vv.24-26): Three months later: "Tamar hath played the harlot" (v.24). Judah: "Bring her forth, and let her be burnt" (v.24). Tamar produces his signet, cord, and staff (v.25). Judah: "She hath been more righteous than I" (v.26) — his moment of repentance and honesty.
The Twins (vv.27-30): Tamar bears twins: Perez ("breach") and Zerah (vv.29-30). Perez is in the direct line to David and Christ (Ruth 4:18-22, Matt 1:3).

Map & Geography

  • Timnah (v.12) — a town in the Shephelah (Judean foothills), likely on the road between the hill country and the coastal plain. Judah goes here for sheep-shearing.
  • Enaim (v.14) — meaning "opening of eyes," a town on the road to Timnah where Tamar waits. Located in what becomes Judah's tribal territory.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik covers Judah's decline, Tamar's desperate action, Judah's confession, and the Messianic significance.
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "More Righteous Than I" on v.26 (MTP Vol. 20, No. 1212) "She hath been more righteous than I — Judah's moment of truth. The man who condemned her to death now confesses she is more righteous than he. This is the beginning of Judah's transformation — from the brother who sold Joseph to the brother who will offer himself for Benjamin (44:33). Confession is the doorway to change."

Reflection

  • 1. "She hath been more righteous than I" (v.26). Judah condemned in others what he practiced himself. Where might you be guilty of the same hypocrisy — judging others for sins you commit?
  • 2. God placed Tamar — a Canaanite woman in a scandalous situation — in Christ's genealogy (Matt 1:3). God's grace reaches into the messiest situations. No one is beyond His redemptive purposes.
  • 3. Judah's confession (v.26) is the beginning of his transformation. By chapter 44, he'll offer himself as a substitute for Benjamin. Honesty about sin is the first step toward change. Are you honest about yours?
  • 4. This chapter contrasts with chapter 39: Judah falls to sexual temptation; Joseph resists it. Same family, different choices. What determines whether you fall or stand?
