Isaiah — Chapter 42

Loading ESV text...

1Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

2He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

3A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

4He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

5Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

6I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

7To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

8I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

9Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

10Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

11Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.

12Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands.

13The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.

14I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.

15I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.

16And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

17They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

18Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.

19Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’S servant?

20Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.

21The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

22But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.

23Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?

24Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.

25Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

1Behold, my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delighteth: I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.

2He will not cry, nor lift up his voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street.

3A bruised reed will he not break, and a dimly burning wick will he not quench: he will bring forth justice in truth.

4He will not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set justice in the earth; and the isles shall wait for his law.

5Thus saith God Jehovah, he that created the heavens, and stretched them forth; he that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

6I, Jehovah, have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thy hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

7to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison-house.

8I am Jehovah, that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise unto graven images.

9Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.

10Sing unto Jehovah a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth; ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein, the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

11Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up [their voice], the villages that Kedar doth inhabit; let the inhabitants of Sela sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.

12Let them give glory unto Jehovah, and declare his praise in the islands.

13Jehovah will go forth as a mighty man; he will stir up [his] zeal like a man of war: he will cry, yea, he will shout aloud; he will do mightily against his enemies.

14I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: [now] will I cry out like a travailing woman; I will gasp and pant together.

15I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and will dry up the pools.

16And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; in paths that they know not will I lead them; I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. These things will I do, and I will not forsake them.

17They shall be turned back, they shall be utterly put to shame, that trust in graven images, that say unto molten images, Ye are our gods.

18Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.

19Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I send? who is blind as he that is at peace [with me], and blind as Jehovah`s servant?

20Thou seest many things, but thou observest not; his ears are open, but he heareth not.

21It pleased Jehovah, for his righteousness` sake, to magnify the law, and make it honorable.

22But this is a people robbed and plundered; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison-houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.

23Who is there among you that will give ear to this? that will hearken and hear for the time to come?

24Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not Jehovah? he against whom we have sinned, and in whose ways they would not walk, neither were they obedient unto his law.

25Therefore he poured upon him the fierceness of his anger, and the strength of battle; and it set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

1“Here is my servant whom I support, my chosen one in whom I take pleasure. I have placed my Spirit on him; he will make just decrees for the nations.

2He will not cry out or shout; he will not publicize himself in the streets.

3A crushed reed he will not break, a dim wick he will not extinguish; he will faithfully make just decrees.

4He will not grow dim or be crushed before establishing justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait in anticipation for his decrees.”

5This is what the true God, the Lord, says— the one who created the sky and stretched it out, the one who fashioned the earth and everything that lives on it, the one who gives breath to the people on it, and life to those who live on it:

6“I, the Lord, officially commission you; I take hold of your hand. I protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people and a light to the nations,

7to open blind eyes, to release prisoners from dungeons, those who live in darkness from prisons.

8“I am the Lord! That is my name! I will not share my glory with anyone else or the praise due me with idols.

9Look, my earlier predictive oracles have come to pass; now I announce new events. Before they begin to occur, I reveal them to you.”

10Sing to the Lord a brand new song! Praise him from the horizon of the earth, you who go down to the sea and everything that lives in it, you coastlands and those who live there.

11Let the wilderness and its cities shout out, the towns where the nomads of Kedar live. Let the residents of Sela shout joyfully; let them shout loudly from the mountaintops.

12Let them give the Lord the honor he deserves; let them praise his deeds in the coastlands.

13The Lord emerges like a hero, like a warrior he inspires himself for battle; he shouts, yes, he yells, he shows his enemies his power.

14“I have been inactive for a long time; I kept quiet and held back. Like a woman in labor I groan; I pant and gasp.

15I will make the trees on the mountains and hills wither up; I will dry up all their vegetation. I will turn streams into islands and dry up pools of water.

16I will lead the blind along an unfamiliar way; I will guide them down paths they have never traveled. I will turn the darkness in front of them into light and level out the rough ground. This is what I will do for them. I will not abandon them.

17Those who trust in idols will turn back and be utterly humiliated, those who say to metal images, ‘You are our gods.’

18“Listen, you deaf ones! Take notice, you blind ones!

19My servant is truly blind, my messenger is truly deaf. My covenant partner, the servant of the Lord, is truly blind.

20You see many things, but don’t comprehend; their ears are open, but do not hear.”

21The Lord wanted to exhibit his justice by magnifying his law and displaying it.

22But these people are looted and plundered; all of them are trapped in pits and held captive in prisons. They were carried away as loot with no one to rescue them; they were carried away as plunder, and no one says, “Bring that back!”

23Who among you will pay attention to this? Who will listen attentively in the future?

24Who handed Jacob over to the robber? Who handed Israel over to the looters? Was it not the Lord, against whom we sinned? They refused to follow his commands; they disobeyed his law.

25So he poured out his fierce anger on them, along with the devastation of war. Its flames encircled them, but they did not realize it; it burned against them, but they did not take it to heart.

1“Behold, my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delights— I have put my Spirit on him. He will bring justice to the nations.

2He will not shout, nor raise his voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street.

3He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a dimly burning wick. He will faithfully bring justice.

4He will not fail nor be discouraged, until he has set justice in the earth, and the islands will wait for his law.”

5Thus says God Yahweh, he who created the heavens and stretched them out, he who spread out the earth and that which comes out of it, he who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk in it.

6“I, Yahweh, have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and make you a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations;

7to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoners out of the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison.

8“I am Yahweh. That is my name. I will not give my glory to another, nor my praise to engraved images.

9Behold, the former things have happened, and I declare new things. I tell you about them before they come up.”

10Sing to Yahweh a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is therein, the islands and their inhabitants.

11Let the wilderness and its cities raise their voices, with the villages that Kedar inhabits. Let the inhabitants of Sela sing. Let them shout from the top of the mountains!

12Let them give glory to Yahweh, and declare his praise in the islands.

13Yahweh will go out like a mighty man. He will stir up zeal like a man of war. He will raise a war cry. Yes, he will shout aloud. He will triumph over his enemies.

14“I have been silent a long time. I have been quiet and restrained myself. Now I will cry out like a travailing woman. I will both gasp and pant.

15I will destroy mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs. I will make the rivers islands, and will dry up the pools.

16I will bring the blind by a way that they don’t know. I will lead them in paths that they don’t know. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. I will do these things, and I will not forsake them.

17“Those who trust in engraved images, who tell molten images, ‘You are our gods’ will be turned back. They will be utterly disappointed.

18“Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see.

19Who is blind, but my servant? Or who is as deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is as blind as he who is at peace, and as blind as Yahweh’s servant?

20You see many things, but don’t observe. His ears are open, but he doesn’t listen.

21It pleased Yahweh, for his righteousness’ sake, to magnify the law, and make it honorable.

22But this is a robbed and plundered people. All of them are snared in holes, and they are hidden in prisons. They have become captives, and no one delivers; and a plunder, and no one says, ‘Restore them!’

23Who is there among you who will give ear to this? Who will listen and hear for the time to come?

24Who gave Jacob as plunder, and Israel to the robbers? Didn’t Yahweh, he against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in his ways, and they disobeyed his law.

25Therefore he poured the fierceness of his anger on him, and the strength of battle; and it set him on fire all around, but he didn’t know; and it burned him, but he didn’t take it to heart.”

Summary

The first Servant Song — God introduces His chosen Servant: gentle, Spirit-empowered, bringing justice to the nations without breaking bruised reeds or quenching smoldering wicks. God sings a new song, then confronts blind and deaf Israel: "Who is blind, but my servant?"

Authorship & Background

Author: Isaiah son of Amoz (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — First Servant Song (vv.1-9) + New Song + Rebuke of Blind Israel Key Themes: The Servant's character (gentle, just, persistent), the Servant as a light to the Gentiles, the new song, God as warrior, Israel's blindness despite being God's servant
Historical Context: Isaiah 42:1-9 is the FIRST of four "Servant Songs" (42:1-9; 49:1-6; 50:4-9; 52:13-53:12). These songs progressively reveal a figure who is both Israel and greater than Israel — ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The Servant is identified by God as "mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth" (v.1) — language used at Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:17). The Servant's mission: bring justice to the nations gently and persistently. He is a covenant for Israel and a light for Gentiles (v.6). The chapter then pivots to ISRAEL as God's "blind servant" (vv.18-20) — creating a contrast between the faithful Servant (Christ) and the unfaithful servant (Israel).
Structure:
  • First Servant Song: The Gentle, Just Servant (vv.1-4)
  • The Servant's Commission: Covenant and Light (vv.5-9)
  • The New Song: God Goes Forth as a Warrior (vv.10-17)
  • Blind and Deaf Israel (vv.18-25)

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
  • Charles Spurgeon: Sermon: "The Bruised Reed" (MTP Vol. 7, No. 372) "'A bruised reed shall he not break.' Come then, you bruised reeds. You who are bent almost to breaking, you whose light is nearly extinguished — He will not finish what sin has started. He mends; He does not snap."

Reflection

  • 1. "A bruised reed shall he not break" (v.3). If you feel barely held together — cracked, fragile, ready to snap — Jesus will NOT finish the job. He doesn't discard damaged people. He MENDS them. Bring Him your brokenness.
  • 2. "The smoking flax shall he not quench" (v.3). If your faith is barely flickering — almost gone, barely smoking — Jesus won't blow it out. He'll fan it. Even the tiniest genuine faith is enough for Him to work with.
  • 3. The Servant doesn't shout (v.2). Jesus' method isn't loud self-promotion. If your image of God is someone shouting angrily, look at the Servant: quiet, gentle, persistent, effective. Power doesn't need volume.
  • 4. Israel was blind (vv.19-20). Being God's servant doesn't guarantee spiritual sight. You can be religious and blind. The cure isn't more activity but openness to the TRUE Servant who brings light.
  • 5. "My glory I will not give to another" (v.8). God is jealous for His reputation — and right to be. When you give ultimate allegiance to anything other than God, you're giving His glory to an imposter.
