Isaiah — Chapter 59

1Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

2But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

3For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

4None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

5They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

6Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

7Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

8The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.

9Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.

10We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.

11We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

12For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;

13In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

14And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.

15Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

16And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

17For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.

18According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.

19So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

20And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.

21As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.

1Behold, Jehovah`s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

2but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, so that he will not hear.

3For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue muttereth wickedness.

4None sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

5They hatch adders` eggs, and weave the spider`s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth; and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

6Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

7Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their paths.

8The way of peace they know not; and there is no justice in their goings: they have made them crooked paths; whosoever goeth therein doth not know peace.

9Therefore is justice far from us, neither doth righteousness overtake us: we look for light, but, behold, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in obscurity.

10We grope for the wall like the blind; yea, we grope as they that have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among them that are lusty we are as dead men.

11We roar all like bears, and moan sore like doves: we look for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

12For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them:

13transgressing and denying Jehovah, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

14And justice is turned away backward, and righteousness standeth afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and uprightness cannot enter.

15Yea, truth is lacking; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey. And Jehovah saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.

16And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his own arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it upheld him.

17And he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a mantle.

18According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, wrath to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompense.

19So shall they fear the name of Jehovah from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come as a rushing stream, which the breath of Jehovah driveth.

20And a Redeemer will come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith Jehovah.

21And as for me, this is my covenant with them, saith Jehovah: my Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed`s seed, saith Jehovah, from henceforth and for ever.

1Look, the Lord’s hand is not too weak to deliver you; his ear is not too deaf to hear you.

2But your sinful acts have alienated you from your God; your sins have caused him to reject you and not listen to your prayers.

3For your hands are stained with blood and your fingers with sin; your lips speak lies, your tongue utters malicious words.

4No one is concerned about justice; no one sets forth his case truthfully. They depend on false words and tell lies; they conceive of oppression and give birth to sin.

5They hatch the eggs of a poisonous snake and spin a spider’s web. Whoever eats their eggs will die, a poisonous snake is hatched.

6Their webs cannot be used for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make. Their deeds are sinful; they commit violent crimes.

7They are eager to do evil, quick to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are sinful; they crush and destroy.

8They are unfamiliar with peace; their deeds are unjust. They use deceitful methods, and whoever deals with them is unfamiliar with peace.

9For this reason deliverance is far from us and salvation does not reach us. We wait for light, but see only darkness; we wait for a bright light, but live in deep darkness.

10We grope along the wall like the blind, we grope like those who cannot see; we stumble at noontime as if it were evening. Though others are strong, we are like dead men.

11We all growl like bears, we coo mournfully like doves; we wait for deliverance, but there is none, for salvation, but it is far from us.

12For you are aware of our many rebellious deeds, and our sins testify against us; indeed, we are aware of our rebellious deeds; we know our sins all too well.

13We have rebelled and tried to deceive the Lord; we turned back from following our God. We stir up oppression and rebellion; we tell lies we concocted in our minds.

14Justice is driven back; godliness stands far off. Indeed, honesty stumbles in the city square and morality is not even able to enter.

15Honesty has disappeared; the one who tries to avoid evil is robbed. The Lord watches and is displeased, for there is no justice.

16He sees there is no advocate; he is shocked that no one intervenes. So he takes matters into his own hands; his desire for justice drives him on.

17He wears his desire for justice like body armor, and his desire to deliver is like a helmet on his head. He puts on the garments of vengeance and wears zeal like a robe.

18He repays them for what they have done, dispensing angry judgment to his adversaries and punishing his enemies. He repays the coastlands.

19In the west, people respect the Lord’s reputation; in the east they recognize his splendor. For he comes like a rushing stream driven on by wind sent from the Lord.

20“A protector comes to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds,” says the Lord.

21“As for me, this is my promise to them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is upon you, and my words, which I have placed in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and descendants from this time forward,” says the Lord.

1Behold, Yahweh’s hand is not shortened, that it can’t save; nor his ear dull, that it can’t hear.

2But your iniquities have separated you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

3For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity. Your lips have spoken lies. Your tongue mutters wickedness.

4No one sues in righteousness, and no one pleads in truth. They trust in vanity, and speak lies. They conceive mischief, and give birth to iniquity.

5They hatch adders’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web. He who eats of their eggs dies; and that which is crushed breaks out into a viper.

6Their webs won’t become garments. They won’t cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and acts of violence are in their hands.

7Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. desolation and destruction are in their paths.

8They don’t know the way of peace; and there is no justice in their ways. They have made crooked paths for themselves; whoever goes in them doesn’t know peace.

9Therefore is justice far from us, and righteousness doesn’t overtake us. We look for light, but see darkness; for brightness, but we walk in obscurity.

10We grope for the wall like the blind. Yes, we grope as those who have no eyes. We stumble at noon as if it were twilight. Among those who are strong, we are like dead men.

11We all roar like bears, and moan bitterly like doves. We look for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

12For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them:

13transgressing and denying Yahweh, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

14Justice is turned away backward, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has fallen in the street, and uprightness can’t enter.

15Yes, truth is lacking; and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. Yahweh saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.

16He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor. Therefore his own arm brought salvation to him; and his righteousness sustained him.

17He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head. He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a mantle.

18According to their deeds, he will repay as appropriate, wrath to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; he will repay the islands their due.

19So shall they fear Yahweh’s name from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come as a rushing stream, which Yahweh’s breath drives.

20“A Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from disobedience in Jacob,” says Yahweh.

21“As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says Yahweh. “My Spirit who is on you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your offspring, nor out of the mouth of your offspring’s offspring,” says Yahweh, “from henceforth and forever.”

Summary

God's hand is not short — YOUR sins have separated you from God. A devastating catalog of Israel's sins: lying, violence, injustice, weaving spider webs. No one stands for justice, so God arms HIMSELF as a warrior, puts on righteousness as a breastplate and salvation as a helmet, and comes as Redeemer to Zion with a covenant: His Spirit and words will never depart.

Authorship & Background

Author: Isaiah son of Amoz (see Chapter 1 notes for full details).
Classification: Prophetic Oracle — Confession and Divine Warrior Key Themes: Sin as separation from God, the catalog of human wickedness, no human intercessor found, God arms Himself as warrior, the Redeemer comes to Zion, the Spirit-and-Word covenant
Historical Context: Israel wonders why God hasn't delivered them. God's answer (v.2): it's not My inability — it's YOUR iniquity. The chapter provides a comprehensive indictment of social and moral corruption (vv.3-8), followed by communal confession (vv.9-15a). When no human champion can be found to intervene (v.16), God arms HIMSELF with the armor of righteousness and salvation. Paul draws on this imagery for the Christian's armor (Ephesians 6:14-17). The chapter ends with a New Covenant promise: God's Spirit and words will remain with His people FOREVER (v.21).
Structure:
  • God's Hand Is Not Short: YOUR Sin Separates (vv.1-2)
  • Catalog of Sins: Violence, Lies, Injustice (vv.3-8)
  • Communal Confession (vv.9-15a)
  • No Human Intercessor Found (vv.15b-16a)
  • God Arms Himself as Warrior (vv.16b-19)
  • The Redeemer Comes to Zion (v.20)
  • The Eternal Covenant: Spirit and Words (v.21)

Map & Geography

  • Zion (v.20): The hill on which Jerusalem/the Temple stood; often used poetically for God's dwelling.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com
  • Charles Spurgeon: "'His arm brought salvation unto him.' When no man could be found, God became His own champion. Christ IS God's arm — stretched out to save because no other arm was long enough. Our salvation required God to save Himself the trouble of finding a human hero — there was none."

Reflection

  • 1. "Your sins have separated" (v.2). If God seems distant, the problem isn't His hearing — it's your sin. The solution isn't more volume in prayer but confession and repentance. Remove the wall.
  • 2. God found no one (v.16). No human hero existed. Not Moses, not Elijah, not any prophet could solve the sin problem. God HAD to do it Himself — which is why Christ is necessary. Human solutions fail; divine intervention doesn't.
  • 3. You wear GOD'S armor (v.17 → Eph 6). When you put on the armor of God, you're wearing what GOD Himself wears. His righteousness, His salvation, His truth. It's not your armor — it's HIS, lent to you.
  • 4. Spirit and Words — FOREVER (v.21). The New Covenant guarantee: God's Spirit and God's words will NEVER depart from His people. Not your generation only but your children's children's children. Permanence.
  • 5. "His arm brought salvation" (v.16). What was impossible for humanity, God accomplished by His own arm. Stop trying to be your own savior. Admit the job is too big for you. Let God's arm do what yours cannot.
