Numbers — Chapter 14

1And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
3And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by daytime in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
22Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.
41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
42Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
44But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
1And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would that we had died in this wilderness!
3And wherefore doth Jehovah bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey: were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes:
7and they spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.
8If Jehovah delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it unto us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9Only rebel not against Jehovah, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is removed from over them, and Jehovah is with us: fear them not.
10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of Jehovah appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.
11And Jehovah said unto Moses, How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?
12I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.
13And Moses said unto Jehovah, Then the Egyptians will hear it; for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;
14and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that thou Jehovah art in the midst of this people; for thou Jehovah art seen face to face, and thy cloud standeth over them, and thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15Now if thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16Because Jehovah was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17And now, I pray thee, let the power of the Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18Jehovah is slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.
19Pardon, I pray thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy lovingkindness, and according as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20And Jehovah said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21but in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Jehovah;
22because all those men that have seen my glory, and my signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised me see it:
24but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley: to-morrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.
26And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27How long [shall I bear] with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28Say unto them, As I live, saith Jehovah, surely as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, that have murmured against me,
30surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31But your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected.
32But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
33And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your whoredoms, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness.
34After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my alienation.
35I, Jehovah, have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,
37even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Jehovah.
38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land.
39And Moses told these words unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up to the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which Jehovah hath promised: for we have sinned.
41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of Jehovah, seeing it shall not prosper?
42Go not up, for Jehovah is not among you; that ye be not smitten down before your enemies.
43For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned back from following Jehovah, therefore Jehovah will not be with you.
44But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who dwelt in that mountain, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.
1Then all the community raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night.
2And all the Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had perished in this wilderness!
3Why has the Lord brought us into this land only to be killed by the sword, that our wives and our children should become plunder? Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”
4So they said to one another, “Let’s appoint a leader and return to Egypt.”
5Then Moses and Aaron fell down with their faces to the ground before the whole assembled community of the Israelites.
6And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of those who had investigated the land, tore their garments.
7They said to the whole community of the Israelites, “The land we passed through to investigate is an exceedingly good land.
8If the Lord delights in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land that is flowing with milk and honey.
9Only do not rebel against the Lord, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection has turned aside from them, but the Lord is with us. Do not fear them!”
10However, the whole community threatened to stone them. But the glory of the Lord appeared to all the Israelites at the tent of meeting.
11The Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me, and how long will they not believe in me, in spite of the signs that I have done among them?
12I will strike them with the pestilence, and I will disinherit them—I will make you into a nation that is greater and mightier than they!”
13Moses said to the Lord, “When the Egyptians hear it—for you brought up this people by your power from among them—
14then they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, Lord, are among this people, that you, Lord, are seen face to face, that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them by day in a pillar of cloud and in a pillar of fire by night.
15If you kill this entire people at once, then the nations that have heard of your fame will say,
16‘Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he killed them in the wilderness.’
17So now, let the power of my Lord be great, just as you have said,
18‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in loyal love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children until the third and fourth generations.’
19Please forgive the iniquity of this people according to your great loyal love, just as you have forgiven this people from Egypt even until now.”
20Then the Lord said, “I have forgiven them as you asked.
21But truly, as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22For all the people have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have tempted me now these ten times, and have not obeyed me—
23they will by no means see the land that I promised on oath to their fathers, nor will any of them who despised me see it—
24Only my servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit and has followed me fully—I will bring him into the land where he had gone, and his descendants will possess it.
25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites were living in the valleys.) Tomorrow, turn and journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”
26The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron:
27“How long must I bear with this evil congregation that murmurs against me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites that they murmured against me.
28Say to them, ‘As I live, says the Lord, I will surely do to you just what you have spoken in my hearing.
29Your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness—all those of you who were numbered, according to your full number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me.
30You will by no means enter into the land where I swore to settle you. The only exceptions are Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
31But I will bring in your little ones, whom you said would become victims of war, and they will enjoy the land that you have despised.
32But as for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness,
33and your children will wander in the wilderness 40 years and suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your dead bodies lie finished in the wilderness.
34According to the number of the days you have investigated this land, 40 days—one day for a year—you will suffer for your iniquities, 40 years, and you will know what it means to thwart me.
35I, the Lord, have said, “I will surely do so to all this evil congregation that has gathered together against me. In this wilderness they will be finished, and there they will die!”’”
36The men whom Moses sent to investigate the land, who returned and made the whole community murmur against him by producing an evil report about the land,
37those men who produced the evil report about the land, died by the plague before the Lord.
38But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among the men who went to investigate the land, lived.
39When Moses told these things to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly.
40And early in the morning they went up to the crest of the hill country, saying, “Here we are, and we will go up to the place that the Lord commanded, for we have sinned.”
41But Moses said, “Why are you now transgressing the commandment of the Lord? It will not succeed!
42Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, and you will be defeated before your enemies.
43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you have turned away from the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.”
44But they dared to go up to the crest of the hill, although neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed from the camp.
45So the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country swooped down and attacked them as far as Hormah.
1All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!
3Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”
4They said to one another, “Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.”
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes.
7They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.
8If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey.
9Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”
10But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.
11Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?
12I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
13Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.
14They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

16‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’
17Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,
18‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’
19Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
20Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word:
21but in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with Yahweh’s glory;
22because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;
23surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.
24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it.
25Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn, and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
26Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
27“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you.
29Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,
30surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31But your little ones, that you said should be captured or killed, them I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.
32But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
33Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.
34After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’
35I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”
36The men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,
37even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.
38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
39Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.
40They rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised: for we have sinned.”
41Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?
42Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies.
43For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword, because you turned back from following Yahweh, therefore Yahweh will not be with you.”
44But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp.
45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.
Summary
Israel rebels, refusing to enter the Promised Land; God sentences the entire generation to die in the wilderness over forty years.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Kadesh-barnea: Israel rebels here at the border of the Promised Land. God sentences the generation to die in the wilderness.
- "This wilderness" (v.29): God turns them back toward the Red Sea (v.25) — away from Canaan.
- The Amalekites and Canaanites in the valleys, the hill country ahead (v.45): Israel presumptuously attacks and is driven back to Hormah.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes the irony of the people's wish: "Would God we had died in this wilderness!" — God grants their request. He notes that Moses' intercession is one of the greatest prayers in Scripture, appealing not to Israel's worthiness but to God's own glory and character.
- Charles Spurgeon: "They said, 'Would God we had died in the wilderness!' — and God said, 'So be it.' Be careful what you ask for in unbelief. God may give you the very thing your faithless lips demand. They wanted death in the wilderness — they received it. Forty years of funerals. A generation buried in the sand. And all because they would not believe that the God who split the sea and rained bread from heaven could also conquer giants. Oh, the tragedy of unbelief! Not that God cannot — but that we will not trust that He can."
Reflection
- 1. "Would God that we had died in this wilderness!" (v.2). Be careful what you say in unbelief — God may grant it. Their faithless wish became their sentence. Words spoken in rebellion can become self-fulfilling prophecies.
- 2. "Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt" (v.4). The ultimate regression: choosing slavery over the difficulty of faith. When following God gets hard, the temptation is always to go back to what was familiar — even if it was bondage.
- 3. Moses' intercession (vv.13-19). Moses does not argue that Israel deserves mercy — they clearly do not. He argues from God's glory and God's character. This is how to pray: not "we are worthy" but "You are faithful." Christ intercedes for us on the same basis — not our merit, but His own righteousness.
- 4. "I have pardoned" — but consequences remain (vv.20-34). Forgiveness does not always mean removal of consequences. God pardons the nation (they are not destroyed), but the generation still dies in the wilderness. Grace is real; so are consequences.
- 5. "He had another spirit" (v.24). Caleb stood against the majority. He saw the same giants but had a different spirit — faith, not fear. What spirit do you have? The spirit of the ten (calculating odds without God) or the spirit of Caleb (trusting God despite the odds)?
- 6. Presumption is not repentance (vv.40-45). The people say "we have sinned" and then immediately disobey again — going up when God says stay. True repentance submits to God's current word, not yesterday's. You cannot undo disobedience by doing the opposite without God's direction.
