89Now when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the atonement lid that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim. Thus he spoke to him.

1On the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, and had anointed it and sanctified it, with all its furniture, and the altar with all its vessels, and had anointed and sanctified them;

2the princes of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ houses, offered. These were the princes of the tribes. These are they who were over those who were counted:

3and they brought their offering before Yahweh, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for every two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they presented them before the tabernacle.

4Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

5“Accept these from them, that they may be used in doing the service of the Tent of Meeting; and you shall give them to the Levites, to every man according to his service.”

6Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them to the Levites.

7He gave two wagons and four oxen to the sons of Gershon, according to their service:

8and he gave four wagons and eight oxen to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

Summary

The twelve tribal leaders bring identical offerings over twelve days for the Tabernacle dedication — extravagant, joyful generosity.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, written during the wilderness period (approximately 1445-1405 BC). Hebrew title: "Bemidbar" — "In the wilderness." The book records Israel's 38 years of wilderness wandering between Sinai and the Promised Land — a journey that should have taken 11 days (Deuteronomy 1:2) but took 40 years due to unbelief.
Historical Context: Chapter 7 is the longest chapter in Numbers (89 verses) and records the dedication offerings of the twelve tribal leaders for the altar. Chronologically, this takes place on the day the Tabernacle was completed and anointed (Exodus 40:17 — the first day of the first month, second year), which is actually BEFORE the census of Numbers 1 (first day of the second month). The chapter is placed here thematically — after the organization of the camp and the Levites, the leaders bring their offerings. The most striking feature: all twelve offerings are IDENTICAL. Each leader brings exactly the same items on successive days. The repetition (which seems tedious to modern readers) makes a theological point: every tribe is equal before God. No tribe gives more or less. No tribe is honored above another in worship. The chapter ends with a remarkable verse (v.89): Moses enters the Tabernacle and hears God's voice speaking from between the cherubim on the mercy seat. The offerings are accepted — God speaks.
Wagons and Oxen for the Levites (vv.1-9): After the Tabernacle is set up and anointed (v.1), the tribal leaders bring six covered wagons and twelve oxen (v.3). God tells Moses to accept them for Levitical service (vv.4-5). Distribution: Gershonites receive 2 wagons and 4 oxen (v.7) — they carry curtains and coverings (lighter loads). Merarites receive 4 wagons and 8 oxen (v.8) — they carry frames, bars, and pillars (heavier loads). The Kohathites receive NONE (v.9) — "because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders." The most holy things are carried by hand, not by cart. (This principle is violated later with tragic results — 2 Samuel 6:3-7.)
The Twelve-Day Dedication (vv.10-83): God commands: one leader per day for twelve days (v.11). The order follows the camp arrangement (Chapter 2): Day 1: Nahshon (Judah) — vv.12-17 Day 2: Nethanel (Issachar) — vv.18-23 Day 3: Eliab (Zebulun) — vv.24-29 Day 4: Elizur (Reuben) — vv.30-35 Day 5: Shelumiel (Simeon) — vv.36-41 Day 6: Eliasaph (Gad) — vv.42-47 Day 7: Elishama (Ephraim) — vv.48-53 Day 8: Gamaliel (Manasseh) — vv.54-59 Day 9: Abidan (Benjamin) — vv.60-65 Day 10: Ahiezer (Dan) — vv.66-71 Day 11: Pagiel (Asher) — vv.72-77 Day 12: Ahira (Naphtali) — vv.78-83
Each offering is identical: — 1 silver plate (charger): 130 shekels, full of flour mixed with oil — 1 silver bowl (basin): 70 shekels, full of flour mixed with oil — 1 golden dish (spoon): 10 shekels, full of incense — 1 bull, 1 ram, 1 male lamb (burnt offering) — 1 male goat (sin offering) — 2 oxen, 5 rams, 5 male goats, 5 male lambs (peace offerings)
The Grand Totals (vv.84-88): Silver plates: 12 (total silver: 2,400 shekels) Golden dishes: 12 (total gold: 120 shekels) Burnt offerings: 12 bulls, 12 rams, 12 lambs Sin offerings: 12 male goats Peace offerings: 24 bulls, 60 rams, 60 male goats, 60 lambs
God Speaks from the Mercy Seat (v.89): After the dedication, Moses enters the tent of meeting and hears God's voice "from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims" (v.89). The offerings are accepted. God responds. Worship leads to communion.

Map & Geography

  • Wilderness of Sinai: The tribal leaders bring offerings to the Tabernacle over 12 days. The Tabernacle is "before the tabernacle of the congregation" at Sinai.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik notes that the repetition of identical offerings emphasizes equality — no tribe is greater or lesser in worship. He also highlights
  • v.89 as the climax: after all the offerings, God speaks. Worship is not one-directional; God responds to those who seek Him.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "Twelve leaders, twelve days, twelve identical offerings. God records each one separately — He does not say 'they all brought the same thing.' No! He names each man and lists each gift as though it were unique. Why? Because to God, each offering IS unique — it comes from a different heart, a different hand, a different act of faith. Your offering may look the same as another's, but God sees the heart behind it. He records it individually. You are not lost in the crowd of worshippers."

Reflection

  • 1. Identical offerings, individual recognition (vv.12-83). God records each leader's offering separately — even though they are all the same. Your faithfulness may look ordinary, but God sees it individually. He does not lump His people together. Your worship is personally received.
  • 2. No shortcuts with holy things (v.9). The Kohathites get no wagons. Sacred things are carried on shoulders — with effort, with care, with personal cost. Are you looking for an easier way to handle what God has entrusted to you? Some things require the weight of personal responsibility.
  • 3. Equality in worship (vv.12-83). No tribe gives more or less. The largest tribe (Judah: 74,600) and the smallest (Manasseh: 32,200) bring the same offering. Worship is not measured by size or wealth but by obedience and heart.
  • 4. One per day (v.11). God does not rush the dedication. Twelve days for twelve leaders. He gives each one a full day — unhurried, unshared attention. God is not in a hurry. He savors each act of worship.
  • 5. Worship leads to hearing God (v.89). After all the offerings, Moses enters and hears God speak. Offering precedes revelation. Worship opens the ears. If you want to hear God, begin with giving — your time, your attention, your sacrifice.
