1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD:

3He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

4All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.

5All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.

6All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body.

7He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head.

8All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD.

9And if any man die very suddenly by him, and he hath defiled the head of his consecration; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it.

10And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:

11And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day.

12And he shall consecrate unto the LORD the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled.

13And this is the law of the Nazarite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:

14And he shall offer his offering unto the LORD, one he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offerings,

15And a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and wafers of unleavened bread anointed with oil, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings.

16And the priest shall bring them before the LORD, and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering:

17And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also his meat offering, and his drink offering.

18And the Nazarite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings.

19And the priest shall take the sodden shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazarite, after the hair of his separation is shaven:

20And the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the LORD: this is holy for the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: and after that the Nazarite may drink wine.

21This is the law of the Nazarite who hath vowed, and of his offering unto the LORD for his separation, beside that that his hand shall get: according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do after the law of his separation.

22And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

23Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,

24The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

25The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

26The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

27And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

1And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

2Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall make a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself unto Jehovah,

3he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or dried.

4All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the grape-vine, from the kernels even to the husk.

5All the days of his vow of separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in which he separateth himself unto Jehovah, he shall be holy; he shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

6All the days that he separateth himself unto Jehovah he shall not come near to a dead body.

7He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die; because his separation unto God is upon his head.

8All the days of his separation he is holy unto Jehovah.

9And if any man die very suddenly beside him, and he defile the head of his separation; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it.

10And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tent of meeting:

11and the priest shall offer one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering, and make atonement for him, for that he sinned by reason of the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day.

12And he shall separate unto Jehovah the days of his separation, and shall bring a he-lamb a year old for a trespass-offering; but the former days shall be void, because his separation was defiled.

13And this is the law of the Nazirite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tent of meeting:

14and he shall offer his oblation unto Jehovah, one he-lamb a year old without blemish for a burnt-offering, and one ewe-lamb a year old without blemish for a sin-offering, and one ram without blemish for peace-offerings,

15and a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and their meal-offering, and their drink-offerings.

16And the priest shall present them before Jehovah, and shall offer his sin-offering, and his burnt-offering:

17and he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto Jehovah, with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.

18And the Nazirite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tent of meeting, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace-offerings.

19And the priest shall take the boiled shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazirite, after he hath shaven [the head of] his separation;

20and the priest shall wave them for a wave-offering before Jehovah; this is holy for the priest, together with the wave-breast and heave-thigh: and after that the Nazirite may drink wine.

21This is the law of the Nazirite who voweth, [and of] his oblation unto Jehovah for his separation, besides that which he is able to get: according to his vow which he voweth, so he must do after the law of his separation.

22And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

23Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel: ye shall say unto them,

24Jehovah bless thee, and keep thee:

25Jehovah make his face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

26Jehovah lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

27So shall they put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

1Then the Lord spoke to Moses:

2“Speak to the Israelites, and tell them, ‘When someone—either a man or a woman—takes a special vow, to take a vow as a Nazirite, to separate himself to the Lord,

3he must separate himself from wine and strong drink; he must drink neither vinegar made from wine nor vinegar made from strong drink, nor may he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or raisins.

4All the days of his separation he must not eat anything that is produced by the grapevine, from seed to skin.

5“‘All the days of the vow of his separation no razor may be used on his head until the time is fulfilled for which he separated himself to the Lord. He will be holy, and he must let the locks of hair on his head grow long.

6“‘All the days that he separates himself to the Lord he must not contact a dead body.

7He must not defile himself even for his father or his mother or his brother or his sister if they die, because the separation for his God is on his head.

8All the days of his separation he must be holy to the Lord.

9“‘If anyone dies very suddenly beside him and he defiles his consecrated head, then he must shave his head on the day of his purification—on the seventh day he must shave it.

10On the eighth day he is to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest, to the entrance to the tent of meeting.

11Then the priest will offer one for a purification offering and the other as a burnt offering, and make atonement for him, because of his transgression in regard to the corpse. So he must reconsecrate his head on that day.

12He must rededicate to the Lord the days of his separation and bring a male lamb in its first year as a reparation offering, but the former days will not be counted because his separation was defiled.

13“‘Now this is the law of the Nazirite: When the days of his separation are fulfilled, he must be brought to the entrance of the tent of meeting,

14and he must present his offering to the Lord: one male lamb in its first year without blemish for a burnt offering, one ewe lamb in its first year without blemish for a purification offering, one ram without blemish for a peace offering,

15and a basket of bread made without yeast, cakes of fine flour mixed with olive oil, wafers made without yeast and smeared with olive oil, and their grain offering and their drink offerings.

16“‘Then the priest must present all these before the Lord and offer his purification offering and his burnt offering.

17Then he must offer the ram as a peace offering to the Lord along with the basket of bread made without yeast; the priest must also offer his grain offering and his drink offering.

18“‘Then the Nazirite must shave his consecrated head at the entrance to the tent of meeting and must take the hair from his consecrated head and put it on the fire where the peace offering is burning.

19And the priest must take the boiled shoulder of the ram, one cake made without yeast from the basket, and one wafer made without yeast, and put them on the hands of the Nazirite after he has shaved his consecrated head;

20then the priest must wave them as a wave offering before the Lord; it is a holy portion for the priest, together with the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the raised offering. After this the Nazirite may drink wine.

21“‘This is the law of the Nazirite who vows to the Lord his offering according to his separation, as well as whatever else he can provide. Thus he must fulfill his vow that he makes, according to the law of his separation.’”

22The Lord spoke to Moses:

23“Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is the way you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

24“‘“The Lord bless you and protect you;

25The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you;

26The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”’”

27“So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2“Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them: ‘When either man or woman shall make a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to Yahweh,

3he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink. He shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of fermented drink, neither shall he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or dried.

4All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing that is made of the grapevine, from the seeds even to the skins.

5“‘All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall come on his head, until the days are fulfilled, in which he separates himself to Yahweh. He shall be holy. He shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

6“‘All the days that he separates himself to Yahweh he shall not go near a dead body.

7He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die; because his separation to God is on his head.

8All the days of his separation he is holy to Yahweh.

9“‘If any man dies very suddenly beside him, and he defiles the head of his separation; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing. On the seventh day he shall shave it.

10On the eighth day he shall bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest, to the door of the Tent of Meeting.

11The priest shall offer one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make atonement for him, because he sinned by reason of the dead, and shall make his head holy that same day.

12He shall separate to Yahweh the days of his separation, and shall bring a male lamb a year old for a trespass offering; but the former days shall be void, because his separation was defiled.

13“‘This is the law of the Nazirite: when the days of his separation are fulfilled, he shall be brought to the door of the Tent of Meeting,

14and he shall offer his offering to Yahweh, one male lamb a year old without defect for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb a year old without defect for a sin offering, and one ram without defect for peace offerings,

15and a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and their meal offering, and their drink offerings.

16The priest shall present them before Yahweh, and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering.

17He shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings to Yahweh, with the basket of unleavened bread. The priest shall offer also its meal offering, and its drink offering.

18The Nazirite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the Tent of Meeting, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace offerings.

19The priest shall take the boiled shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them on the hands of the Nazirite, after he has shaved the head of his separation;

20and the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before Yahweh. This is holy for the priest, together with the breast that is waved and the thigh that is offered. After that the Nazirite may drink wine.

21“‘This is the law of the Nazirite who vows, and of his offering to Yahweh for his separation, besides that which he is able to get. According to his vow which he vows, so he must do after the law of his separation.’”

22Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

23“Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘This is how you shall bless the children of Israel.’ You shall tell them,

24‘Yahweh bless you, and keep you.

25Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you.

26Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

27“So they shall put my name on the children of Israel; and I will bless them.”

Summary

God establishes the Nazirite vow of special consecration and gives the priestly blessing — 'The LORD bless you and keep you.'

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, written during the wilderness period (approximately 1445-1405 BC). Hebrew title: "Bemidbar" — "In the wilderness." The book records Israel's 38 years of wilderness wandering between Sinai and the Promised Land — a journey that should have taken 11 days (Deuteronomy 1:2) but took 40 years due to unbelief.
Historical Context: Chapter 6 contains two distinct but related sections: the law of the Nazirite vow (vv.1-21) and the Aaronic Blessing (vv.22-27). The Nazirite vow allows any Israelite — man or woman — to consecrate themselves to God in a special way for a set period. This is remarkable: in a system where only Levites serve the Tabernacle and only Aaron's sons are priests, the Nazirite vow opens a path of extraordinary devotion to any person from any tribe. It is voluntary, temporary (usually), and intensely personal. The three restrictions — no wine/grapes, no razor, no contact with the dead — mirror aspects of the high priest's consecration, suggesting the Nazirite takes on a priest-like holiness. The chapter concludes with the Aaronic Blessing (vv.24-26), one of the most beloved passages in all Scripture — the words God commands the priests to speak over Israel. It is God's own blessing, spoken through human lips, placing His name upon His people.
The Nazirite Vow — Separation unto the LORD (vv.1-8): Either man or woman may take this vow (v.2) — "to separate themselves unto the LORD." Three requirements: (1) No wine, strong drink, grape juice, grapes (fresh or dried), or anything from the vine — "from the kernels even to the husk" (vv.3-4). Total abstinence from the fruit of the vine. (2) No razor on the head — hair grows freely as a visible sign of the vow (v.5). "He shall be holy." (3) No contact with any dead body — not even father, mother, brother, or sister (vv.6-7). "The consecration of his God is upon his head" (v.7). "All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD" (v.8). The Nazirite is set apart — visibly (long hair), behaviorally (no wine), and relationally (no corpse contact). The vow is total.
Defilement and Restoration (vv.9-12): If someone dies suddenly near the Nazirite, defiling his consecrated head (v.9): he shaves his head on the seventh day (day of cleansing) (v.9). On the eighth day: two turtledoves or pigeons — one for sin offering, one for burnt offering (vv.10-11). Atonement is made (v.11). He re-consecrates and brings a lamb for a trespass/guilt offering (v.12). Critical: "the days that were before shall be lost" (v.12) — the previous time does not count. He starts over. The vow cannot be partially fulfilled. Defilement resets the clock entirely.
Completion of the Vow (vv.13-21): When the days are fulfilled, the Nazirite comes to the Tabernacle entrance (v.13). He brings: one male lamb (burnt offering), one ewe lamb (sin offering), one ram (peace offering), plus unleavened bread, grain offering, and drink offerings (vv.14-15). The priest offers them (vv.16-17). The Nazirite shaves his consecrated head and puts the hair in the fire under the peace offering (v.18) — the hair itself becomes an offering to God. The priest places the boiled shoulder, one cake, and one wafer in the Nazirite's hands, then waves them (vv.19-20). "After that the Nazarite may drink wine" (v.20) — the vow is complete. The separation ends with celebration.
The Aaronic Blessing (vv.22-27): God commands Aaron and his sons to bless Israel with these words (v.23): "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee" (v.24) — provision and protection. "The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee" (v.25) — favor and grace. "The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace" (v.26) — attention and shalom. "And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them" (v.27). The priests speak the words, but GOD does the blessing. His name is placed upon His people — they bear His identity. Three lines, three blessings, the name "LORD" (Yahweh) three times — many see a foreshadowing of the Trinity.

  • Wilderness of Sinai: The Nazirite vow and Aaronic blessing are given while Israel is still encamped at Sinai.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that the Nazirite vow democratizes holiness — any Israelite can take on extraordinary consecration. He notes the three restrictions parallel the high priest's life, making the Nazirite a "lay priest." On the Aaronic Blessing, he highlights the threefold repetition of "the LORD" as a Trinitarian hint.
  • Charles Spurgeon: On the Aaronic Blessing: "Three times the sacred name is spoken. Three blessings are pronounced. The Father blesses and keeps. The Son makes His face to shine and is gracious. The Spirit lifts up His countenance and gives peace. Here is the whole Trinity engaged in blessing the people of God. And mark the last verse: 'I will bless them.' The priests speak the words, but God performs the deed. The blessing is not in the priest's lips but in God's hands."

Reflection

  • 1. Voluntary consecration (v.2). The Nazirite vow is not commanded — it is chosen. God honors those who voluntarily set themselves apart for Him. What are you willing to give up — not because you must, but because you want to draw closer to God?
  • 2. Visible holiness (v.5). The uncut hair is a public sign. The Nazirite's devotion is not hidden. Are you willing to be visibly identified with God, even when it draws attention or questions?
  • 3. Total commitment (v.4). Not just "no wine" but "nothing from the vine — from kernels to husk." God is not interested in partial devotion. Half- measures insult the vow. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ALL thy heart" (Deuteronomy 6:5).
  • 4. Failure resets the clock (v.12). If the Nazirite is defiled, previous days are lost. You cannot bank holiness. Past faithfulness does not cover present failure. But note: the vow can be restarted. Failure is not final — restoration is possible.
  • 5. The Aaronic Blessing (vv.24-26). God wants to bless His people. He commands the priests to speak blessing — not curse, not warning, but BLESSING. And He Himself performs it: "I will bless them" (v.27). Rest in this: God's disposition toward His people is blessing. "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee."
