1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.

3And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the LORD of Midian.

4Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.

5So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

6And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.

7And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.

8And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.

9And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.

10And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.

11And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.

12And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.

13And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.

14And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.

15And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?

16Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.

17Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

18But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

19And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.

20And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood.

21And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses;

22Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

23Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.

24And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.

25And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

26Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:

27And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:

28And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:

29Take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for an heave offering of the LORD.

30And of the children of Israel’s half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.

31And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.

32And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,

33And threescore and twelve thousand beeves,

34And threescore and one thousand asses,

35And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.

36And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:

37And the LORD’S tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.

38And the beeves were thirty and six thousand; of which the LORD’S tribute was threescore and twelve.

39And the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred; of which the LORD’S tribute was threescore and one.

40And the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the LORD’S tribute was thirty and two persons.

41And Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD’S heave offering, unto Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.

42And of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided from the men that warred,

43(Now the half that pertained unto the congregation was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep,

44And thirty and six thousand beeves,

45And thirty thousand asses and five hundred,

46And sixteen thousand persons;)

47Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

48And the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:

49And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.

50We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.

51And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.

52And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.

53(For the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)

54And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the congregation, for a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.

1And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

2Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.

3And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm ye men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute Jehovah`s vengeance on Midian.

4Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.

5So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

6And Moses sent them, a thousand of every tribe, to the war, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

7And they warred against Midian, as Jehovah commanded Moses; and they slew every male.

8And they slew the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.

9And the children of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods, they took for a prey.

10And all their cities in the places wherein they dwelt, and all their encampments, they burnt with fire.

11And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of man and of beast.

12And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and unto Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho.

13And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.

14And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.

15And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?

16Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Jehovah.

17Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

18But all the women-children, that have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

19And encamp ye without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, ye and your captives.

20And as to every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats` [hair], and all things made of wood, ye shall purify yourselves.

21And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war that went to the battle, This is the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded Moses:

22howbeit the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

23everything that may abide the fire, ye shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make to go through the water.

24And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean; and afterward ye shall come into the camp.

25And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

26Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers` [houses] of the congregation;

27and divide the prey into two parts: between the men skilled in war, that went out to battle, and all the congregation.

28And levy a tribute unto Jehovah of the men of war that went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, [both] of the persons, and of the oxen, and of the asses, and of the flocks:

29take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for Jehovah`s heave-offering.

30And of the children of Israel`s half, thou shalt take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the flocks, [even] of all the cattle, and give them unto the Levites, that keep the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.

31And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Jehovah commanded Moses.

32Now the prey, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,

33and threescore and twelve thousand oxen,

34and threescore and one thousand asses,

35and thirty and two thousand persons in all, of the women that had not known man by lying with him.

36And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep:

37and Jehovah`s tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.

38And the oxen were thirty and six thousand; of which Jehovah`s tribute was threescore and twelve.

39And the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred; of which Jehovah`s tribute was threescore and one.

40And the persons were sixteen thousand; of whom Jehovah`s tribute was thirty and two persons.

41And Moses gave the tribute, which was Jehovah`s heave-offering, unto Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

42And of the children of Israel`s half, which Moses divided off from the men that warred

43(now the congregation`s half was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand, seven thousand and five hundred sheep,

44and thirty and six thousand oxen,

45and thirty thousand and five hundred asses,

46and sixteen thousand persons),

47even of the children of Israel`s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, that kept the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah; as Jehovah commanded Moses.

48And the officers that were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses;

49and they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war that are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.

50And we have brought Jehovah`s oblation, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, ankle-chains, and bracelets, signet-rings, ear-rings, and armlets, to make atonement for our souls before Jehovah.

51And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.

52And all the gold of the heave-offering that they offered up to Jehovah, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.

53([For] the men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.)

54And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, for a memorial for the children of Israel before Jehovah.

1The Lord spoke to Moses:

2“Exact vengeance for the Israelites from the Midianites—after that you will be gathered to your people.”

3So Moses spoke to the people: “Arm men from among you for the war, to attack the Midianites and to execute the Lord’s vengeance on Midian.

4You must send to the battle 1,000 men from every tribe throughout all the tribes of Israel.”

5So 1,000 from every tribe, 12,000 armed for battle in all, were provided out of the thousands of Israel.

6So Moses sent them to the war, 1,000 from every tribe, with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who was in charge of the holy articles and the signal trumpets.

7They fought against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

8They killed the kings of Midian in addition to those slain—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—five Midianite kings. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

9The Israelites took the women of Midian captive along with their little ones, and took all their herds, all their flocks, and all their goods as plunder.

10They burned all their towns where they lived and all their encampments.

11They took all the plunder and all the spoils, both people and animals.

12They brought the captives and the spoils and the plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the Israelite community, to the camp on the rift valley plains of Moab, along the Jordan River across from Jericho.

13Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went out to meet them outside the camp.

14But Moses was furious with the officers of the army, the commanders over thousands and commanders over hundreds, who had come from service in the war.

15Moses said to them, “Have you allowed all the women to live?

16Look, these people through the counsel of Balaam caused the Israelites to act treacherously against the Lord in the matter of Peor—which resulted in the plague among the community of the Lord!

17Now therefore kill every boy, and kill every woman who has been intimate with a man in bed.

18But all the young women who have not experienced a man’s bed will be yours.

19“Any of you who has killed anyone or touched any of the dead, remain outside the camp for seven days; purify yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.

20You must purify each garment and everything that is made of skin, everything made of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood.”

21Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone into the battle, “This is the ordinance of the law that the Lord commanded Moses:

22‘Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

23everything that may stand the fire, you are to pass through the fire, and it will be ceremonially clean, but it must still be purified with the water of purification. Anything that cannot withstand the fire you must pass through the water.

24You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you will be ceremonially clean, and afterward you may enter the camp.’”

25Then the Lord spoke to Moses:

26“You and Eleazar the priest, and all the family leaders of the community, take the sum of the plunder that was captured, both people and animals.

27Divide the plunder into two parts, one for those who took part in the war—who went out to battle—and the other for all the community.

28“You must exact a tribute for the Lord from the fighting men who went out to battle: one life out of 500, from the people, the cattle, and from the donkeys and the sheep.

29You are to take it from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest for a raised offering to the Lord.

30From the Israelites’ half share you are to take one portion out of 50 of the people, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep—from every kind of animal—and you are to give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.”

31So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

32The spoil that remained of the plunder that the fighting men had gathered was 675,000 sheep,

3372,000 cattle,

3461,000 donkeys,

35and 32,000 young women who had not experienced a man’s bed.

36The half portion of those who went to war numbered 337,500 sheep;

37the Lord’s tribute from the sheep was 675.

38The cattle numbered 36,000; the Lord’s tribute was 72.

39The donkeys were 30,500, of which the Lord’s tribute was 61.

40The people were 16,000, of which the Lord’s tribute was 32 people.

41So Moses gave the tribute, which was the Lord’s raised offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.

42From the Israelites’ half share that Moses had separated from the fighting men,

43there were 337,500 sheep from the portion belonging to the community,

4436,000 cattle,

4530,500 donkeys,

46and 16,000 people.

47From the Israelites’ share Moses took one of every 50 people and animals and gave them to the Levites who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

48Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders over thousands and the commanders over hundreds, approached Moses

49and said to him, “Your servants have taken a count of the men who were in the battle, who were under our authority, and not one is missing.

50So we have brought as an offering for the Lord what each man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”

51Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all of it in the form of ornaments.

52All the gold of the offering they offered up to the Lord from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds weighed 16,750 shekels.

53Each soldier had taken plunder for himself.

54So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord.

1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2“Avenge the children of Israel for the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”

3Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute Yahweh’s vengeance on Midian.

4Of every tribe one thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, you shall send to the war.”

5So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

6Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

7They fought against Midian, as Yahweh commanded Moses. They killed every male.

8They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.

9The children of Israel took the women of Midian captive with their little ones; and all their livestock, all their flocks, and all their goods, they took as plunder.

10All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.

11They took all the captives, and all the plunder, both of man and of animal.

12They brought the captives, and the prey, and the plunder, to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho.

13Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went out to meet them outside of the camp.

14Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.

15Moses said to them, “Have you saved all the women alive?

16Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Yahweh in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh.

17Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him.

18But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

19“Encamp outside of the camp seven days. Whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.

20As to every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood, you shall purify yourselves.”

21Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle, “This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded Moses:

22however the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

23everything that may withstand the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity. All that doesn’t withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water.

24You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. Afterward you shall come into the camp.”

25Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

26“Count the plunder that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation;

27and divide the plunder into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.

28Levy a tribute to Yahweh of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks.

29Take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for Yahweh’s wave offering.

30Of the children of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, of all the livestock, and give them to the Levites, who perform the duty of Yahweh’s tabernacle.”

31Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Yahweh commanded Moses.

32Now the plunder, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,

33and seventy-two thousand head of cattle,

34and sixty-one thousand donkeys,

35and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him.

36The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep:

37and Yahweh’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five.

38The cattle were thirty-six thousand; of which Yahweh’s tribute was seventy-two.

39The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred; of which Yahweh’s tribute was sixty-one.

40The persons were sixteen thousand; of whom Yahweh’s tribute was thirty-two persons.

41Moses gave the tribute, which was Yahweh’s wave offering, to Eleazar the priest, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

42Of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided off from the men who fought

43(now the congregation’s half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,

44and thirty-six thousand head of cattle,

45and thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,

46and sixteen thousand persons),

47even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of Yahweh’s tabernacle; as Yahweh commanded Moses.

48The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses.

49They said to Moses, “Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our command, and there lacks not one man of us.

50We have brought Yahweh’s offering, what every man has gotten, of jewels of gold, armlets, and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Yahweh.”

51Moses and Eleazar the priest took their gold, even all worked jewels.

52All the gold of the wave offering that they offered up to Yahweh, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels.

53The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.

54Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the Tent of Meeting, for a memorial for the children of Israel before Yahweh.

Summary

Israel takes vengeance on Midian for the Baal-Peor seduction; the spoil is divided and purified, and not one Israelite soldier is lost.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, written during the wilderness period (approximately 1445-1405 BC). Hebrew title: "Bemidbar" — "In the wilderness." The book records Israel's 38 years of wilderness wandering between Sinai and the Promised Land — a journey that should have taken 11 days (Deuteronomy 1:2) but took 40 years due to unbelief.
Historical Context: Chapter 31 records the war against Midian — the fulfillment of God's command in 25:16-18 to "harass the Midianites and strike them down" for their role in the Baal-Peor seduction. This is explicitly called "the LORD's vengeance on Midian" (v.3) — divine judgment executed through human agency. God tells Moses this will be his final act before death: "Afterward you shall be gathered to your people" (v.2). Twelve thousand Israelites (1,000 per tribe) go to war under Phinehas (the zealous priest of chapter 25), carrying the holy vessels and trumpets. They kill every Midianite male, including the five kings and Balaam himself (v.8). The chapter also records Moses' anger when the army spares the Midianite women — the very women who "caused the children of Israel... to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor" (v.16). The spoils are divided systematically: half to the warriors, half to the congregation, with portions for the LORD (via the priests) and the Levites. Remarkably, not a single Israelite soldier dies (v.49) — a miraculous testimony to God's protection. The officers bring a voluntary gold offering of 16,750 shekels as thanksgiving.
The Command (vv.1-4): God's final command to Moses: "Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites" (KJV). This is vengeance for Baal-Peor — the Midianites used their women as weapons of spiritual warfare (25:1-18; 31:16). One thousand men from each tribe — 12,000 total. A relatively small force, emphasizing that victory depends on God, not numbers.
The Campaign (vv.5-12): Moses sends them with Phinehas (not Joshua — this is priestly war, holy war), carrying "the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets" (v.6). They kill every male, including the five kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba (v.8). Zur is the father of Cozbi (25:15) — the woman Phinehas killed. They also kill Balaam son of Beor "with the sword" (v.8) — the prophet-for-hire meets his end among those whose destruction he engineered. They burn all cities and camps, take captives, livestock, and plunder.
Moses' Anger (vv.13-18): Moses is furious that the officers spared the women — "these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor" (v.16). This verse explicitly identifies Balaam as the architect of the Baal-Peor strategy. Moses commands: kill every male child and every woman who has "known man" — spare only the young virgins (v.18). The severity reflects the severity of the threat: these women were weapons of spiritual destruction.
Purification (vv.19-24): Warriors who killed or touched the dead must purify themselves outside the camp for seven days (the standard corpse- contamination period). All plunder must be purified: metals through fire and the "water of separation" (the red heifer water of chapter 19); non-metals through water alone. War defiles even the victorious — contact with death requires cleansing before returning to the holy camp.
Division of Spoils (vv.25-47): God prescribes the division: — Half to the 12,000 warriors; half to the congregation — From the warriors' half: 1/500 to the LORD (given to priests) — From the congregation's half: 1/50 to the Levites The spoils: 675,000 sheep, 72,000 cattle, 61,000 donkeys, 32,000 persons (virgin women). The LORD's tribute from the warriors: 675 sheep, 72 cattle, 61 donkeys, 32 persons. The Levites' portion from the congregation: larger (1/50 vs. 1/500) because they serve the tabernacle full-time.
The Miraculous Preservation (vv.48-54): The officers report: "there is not a man missing from us" (v.49). Not one Israelite soldier died in the entire campaign — a stunning miracle. In gratitude, the officers bring a voluntary offering of gold jewelry: 16,750 shekels (approximately 420 pounds of gold). This is "to make atonement for our souls before the LORD" (v.50) — not for sin, but thanksgiving for preservation. The gold is placed in the tabernacle "as a memorial for the people of Israel" (v.54).

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik addresses the difficulty of this chapter for modern readers: the severity of the judgment reflects the severity of the spiritual threat. Midian used women as weapons of mass spiritual destruction — the response is proportional to the danger. He notes that Balaam's death among the Midianites confirms his true allegiance: he died with the enemies of God.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "Balaam died by the sword — the prophet who blessed Israel with his lips but cursed them with his counsel. He could not be hired to speak against God's people, so he taught their enemies how to seduce them. Many a man who will not openly oppose the gospel will quietly undermine it. Balaam is the patron saint of those who serve God with their mouths and Mammon with their hearts. His end is instructive: he perished among the very people whose gold he coveted. The wages of unrighteousness purchased only a grave among the ungodly."

Reflection

  • 1. Balaam dies with his allies (v.8). You will share the fate of those you align with. Balaam blessed Israel with his mouth but allied with Midian in his heart — and died among them. Where is your true allegiance? Not what you say, but where you stand when the sword falls.
  • 2. "Through the counsel of Balaam" (v.16). The most dangerous enemies are not those who attack openly but those who advise compromise. Who is counseling you toward "small" compromises that lead to spiritual destruction?
  • 3. Not one man missing (v.49). When God sends you into battle, He is responsible for the outcome. Obedience to God's command carries God's protection. The 12,000 faced an entire nation and lost nothing. What battle is God calling you to that you're avoiding out of fear?
  • 4. Gratitude expressed in gold (v.50). The officers' response to miraculous preservation is extravagant generosity — 420 pounds of gold. When God delivers you, do you respond with proportional gratitude? Or do you pocket the blessing and forget the Deliverer?
  • 5. Purification after victory (vv.19-24). Even righteous warfare defiles. Contact with death — even in obedience — requires cleansing. Victory does not exempt you from the need for purification. After every spiritual battle, return to God for cleansing.
  • 6. The severity of judgment (vv.17-18). This chapter is difficult — but the severity reflects the severity of the threat. The Midianite women were weapons that killed 24,000 Israelites. God's judgment is always proportional to the danger. Do you take spiritual threats as seriously as God does?
