34And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.

28And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.
29And the tribe of Naphtali: and the prince of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan.
30And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.
31All that were numbered of the camp of Dan were a hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred. They shall set forth hindmost by their standards.
32These are they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers` houses: all that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.
33But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as Jehovah commanded Moses.
34Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that Jehovah commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set forward, every one by their families, according to their fathers` houses.
1The Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron:
2“Every one of the Israelites must camp under his standard with the emblems of his family; they must camp at some distance around the tent of meeting.
3“Now those who will be camping on the east, toward the sunrise, are the divisions of the camp of Judah under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.
4Those numbered in his division are 74,600.
5Those who will be camping next to them are the tribe of Issachar. The leader of the people of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar.
6Those numbered in his division are 54,400.
7Next will be the tribe of Zebulun. The leader of the people of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon.
8Those numbered in his division are 57,400.
9All those numbered of the camp of Judah, according to their divisions, are 186,400. They will travel at the front.
10“On the south will be the divisions of the camp of Reuben under their standard. The leader of the people of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur.
11Those numbered in his division are 46,500.
12Those who will be camping next to them are the tribe of Simeon. The leader of the people of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
13Those numbered in his division are 59,300.
14Next will be the tribe of Gad. The leader of the people of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel.
15Those numbered in his division are 45,650.
16All those numbered of the camp of Reuben, according to their divisions, are 151,450. They will travel second.
17“Then the tent of meeting with the camp of the Levites will travel in the middle of the camps. They will travel in the same order as they camped, each in his own place under his standard.
18“On the west will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.
19Those numbered in his division are 40,500.
20Next to them will be the tribe of Manasseh. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.
21Those numbered in his division are 32,200.
22Next will be the tribe of Benjamin. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni.
23Those numbered in his division are 35,400.
24All those numbered of the camp of Ephraim, according to their divisions, are 108,100. They will travel third.
25“On the north will be the divisions of the camp of Dan, under their standards. The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
26Those numbered in his division are 62,700.
27Those who will be camping next to them are the tribe of Asher. The leader of the people of Asher is Pagiel son of Ocran.
28Those numbered in his division are 41,500.
29Next will be the tribe of Naphtali. The leader of the people of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan.
30Those numbered in his division are 53,400.
31All those numbered of the camp of Dan are 157,600. They will travel last, under their standards.”
32These are the Israelites, numbered according to their families. All those numbered in the camps, by their divisions, are 603,550.
33But the Levites were not numbered among the other Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.
34So the Israelites did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses; that is the way they camped under their standards, and that is the way they traveled, each with his clan and family.
1Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
2“The children of Israel shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ houses: at a distance from the Tent of Meeting shall they encamp around it.”
3Those who encamp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Judah shall be Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
4His division, and those who were counted of them, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
5Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar: and the prince of the children of Issachar shall be Nethanel the son of Zuar.
6His division, and those who were counted of it, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
7The tribe of Zebulun: and the prince of the children of Zebulun shall be Eliab the son of Helon.
8His division, and those who were counted of it, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
9All who were counted of the camp of Judah were one hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred, according to their divisions. They shall set out first.
10“On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their divisions. The prince of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.
11His division, and those who were counted of it, were forty-six thousand five hundred.
12“Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon. The prince of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
13His division, and those who were counted of them, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
14“The tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.
15His division, and those who were counted of them, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
16“All who were counted of the camp of Reuben were one hundred fifty-one thousand four hundred fifty, according to their armies. They shall set out second.
17“Then the Tent of Meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps. As they encamp, so shall they set out, every man in his place, by their standards.
18“On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.
19His division, and those who were counted of them, were forty thousand five hundred.
20“Next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh: and the prince of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
21His division, and those who were counted of them, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
22“The tribe of Benjamin: and the prince of the children of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni.
23His army, and those who were counted of them, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
24“All who were counted of the camp of Ephraim were one hundred eight thousand one hundred, according to their divisions. They shall set out third.
25“On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
26His division, and those who were counted of them, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
27“Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher: and the prince of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ochran.
28His division, and those who were counted of them, were forty-one thousand and five hundred.
29“The tribe of Naphtali: and the prince of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan.
30His division, and those who were counted of them, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
31“All who were counted of the camp of Dan were one hundred fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They shall set out last by their standards.”
32These are those who were counted of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses. All who were counted of the camps according to their armies were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.
33But the Levites were not counted among the children of Israel; as Yahweh commanded Moses.
34Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers’ houses.
Summary
God arranges Israel's camp in precise order around the Tabernacle — three tribes on each side, with God at the center of His people.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- Wilderness of Sinai: Israel's camp is organized around the Tabernacle — three tribes on each side (east, south, west, north).
- The camp arrangement forms a cross-shaped pattern when viewed from above, with the Tabernacle at the center.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes the theological significance of the camp arrangement: God at the center, His people around Him in order. He notes that the arrangement teaches that God's presence should be central to all of life, and that God is a God of order, not chaos.
- Charles Spurgeon: "See how God arranges His people! Not scattered, not confused, but each in his place, each under his banner, each facing the Tabernacle. God is in the center, and all revolves around Him. So it should be in your life — God at the center, everything else arranged around His presence. When God is displaced from the center, all falls into disorder."
Reflection
- 1. God at the center (v.17). The Tabernacle is in the middle of everything. Every Israelite, no matter which direction he looked from his tent, looked toward God's dwelling. Is God at the center of your life, or has He been pushed to the periphery?
- 2. Everyone has a place (v.2). No one is without assignment. No one is left out. God has a specific place for every person in His community. Your place may not be the "east side" (the place of honor), but it is God-assigned and God-ordained.
- 3. Judah leads (v.9). The tribe of praise goes first. "Judah" means "praise" (Genesis 29:35). When God's people move forward, praise leads the way. Before the battle, before the journey — praise. (See also 2 Chronicles 20:21-22.)
- 4. Order, not chaos (v.34). God prescribes exact positions. He is not a God of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). This does not mean rigidity without life — it means purposeful arrangement. Freedom without order is chaos; order without freedom is death. God gives both.
- 5. The camp as a picture of the Church. God dwelling in the midst of His people, each member in their place, each with a function, all oriented toward Him. "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20).
