1These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.

2And Moses wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the commandment of the LORD: and these are their journeys according to their goings out.

3And they departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians.

55But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.

Summary

A record of Israel's forty-two camping stations from Egypt to the plains of Moab — God's faithfulness traced through the wilderness journey.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, written during the wilderness period (approximately 1445-1405 BC). Hebrew title: "Bemidbar" — "In the wilderness." The book records Israel's 38 years of wilderness wandering between Sinai and the Promised Land — a journey that should have taken 11 days (Deuteronomy 1:2) but took 40 years due to unbelief.
Historical Context: Chapter 33 is a unique document — a divinely commanded travel log recording all 42 camping stations from Egypt to the plains of Moab. Verse 2 explicitly states: "Moses wrote down their starting places, stage by stage, by command of the LORD" (ESV). This is not mere geography but theology: God remembers every step of the journey. Each camp represents His faithfulness — provision in the wilderness, guidance through the unknown, patience with a rebellious people. The itinerary divides roughly into three sections: (1) Egypt to Sinai (vv.3-15, about 2 months), (2) Sinai to Kadesh (vv.16-36, the 38 years of wandering — compressed into a list of names), and (3) Kadesh to the plains of Moab (vv.37-49, the final year). The chapter concludes with God's command to drive out Canaan's inhabitants completely (vv.50-56) — with a severe warning: those left remaining will become "barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides" (v.55). This prophecy was tragically fulfilled throughout Judges and Kings.
The Record Commanded (vv.1-2): Moses writes "by the commandment of the LORD" — this is inspired historical record. God wants the journey remembered: every departure, every camp, every stage. The wilderness was not meaningless wandering but a guided pilgrimage under divine sovereignty.
Egypt to Sinai (vv.3-15): The journey begins at Rameses on the 15th of the first month — "the morrow after the Passover" (v.3). Israel goes out "with a high hand" (KJV) / "triumphantly" (ESV) while Egypt buries its firstborn (v.4). Key stations: Succoth → Etham → Pi-hahiroth (the Red Sea crossing, v.8) → Marah (bitter water) → Elim (12 springs, 70 palms) → Red Sea → Wilderness of Sin → Dophkah → Alush → Rephidim (no water; water from the rock) → Wilderness of Sinai. Approximately 11 stations in 2 months.
Sinai to Kadesh (vv.16-36): The 38 years of wandering compressed into 21 stations. Many of these locations are mentioned nowhere else in Scripture — they are known only to God and to those who camped there. Key named stations: Kibroth-hattaavah ("graves of craving" — Numbers 11) → Hazeroth (Miriam's leprosy — Numbers 12) → [18 stations during the wandering years] → Ezion-geber (near the Gulf of Aqaba) → Wilderness of Zin/Kadesh. The brevity is striking: 38 years reduced to a list of names. The years of judgment pass without narrative — only movement and waiting.
Kadesh to the Plains of Moab (vv.37-49): The final year's journey. Aaron dies on Mount Hor — "in the fortieth year" on the 1st of the 5th month, at age 123 (vv.38-39). The king of Arad attacks (v.40; cf. 21:1-3). The route continues through Zalmonah, Punon, Oboth, and into Moab, ending at Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab — directly across from Jericho.
The Command to Conquer (vv.50-56): God commands: when you cross the Jordan, (1) drive out ALL inhabitants; (2) destroy their "figured stones" (ESV) / "pictures" (KJV) — carved idolatrous images; (3) destroy their metal images; (4) demolish their high places. The land is to be divided by lot, proportional to tribe size (v.54). The warning (vv.55-56): failure to drive them out means they will become "barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides" — and ultimately, "I will do to you as I thought to do to them." Incomplete obedience brings the judgment meant for the enemy upon yourself.

Map & Geography

  • A complete travel log from Raamses (Egypt) to the plains of Moab — 42 campsites listed (vv.5-49).
  • Key stops: Raamses → Succoth → Etham → Pi-hahiroth (Red Sea) → Marah → Elim → Wilderness of Sin → Rephidim → Sinai → Hazeroth → Kadesh → Mount Hor → Plains of Moab.
  • "Ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land" (v.52): The command for Canaan.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that God commanded this record because He values the journey, not just the destination. Every camp — even the unnamed, uneventful ones — was under God's care. He also stresses the severity of vv.55-56: incomplete obedience is not partial success but guaranteed future failure.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "Forty-two stations — forty-two camps in the wilderness. God remembers them all. You may have forgotten the dark valleys, the dry places, the weary marches of your spiritual life — but God has written them down. Not one tear was unwatched, not one step unguided. And if He brought Israel through forty-two stations to the border of Canaan, He will bring you through every trial to your inheritance. The journey is long, but the Guide is faithful, and the destination is certain."

Reflection

  • 1. God commands the record (v.2). He wants the journey remembered — not just the highlights but every stage. Your spiritual journey matters to God: the dry seasons, the uneventful stretches, the painful camps. He was present at every one. Do you remember His faithfulness in the ordinary stages?
  • 2. Forty-two stations, one destination (vv.3-49). The journey was long, winding, and often repetitive — but it had a destination. God was not lost; Israel was being led. Your life may feel like aimless wandering, but if God is guiding, every stage has purpose.
  • 3. "Upon their gods the LORD executed judgments" (v.4). The Exodus was not just about Israel's freedom but about God's supremacy over all rivals. Every deliverance in your life is also a declaration: the LORD alone is God.
  • 4. The 38 years compressed (vv.16-36). The years of judgment pass in silence — just a list of names. Wasted years leave little to record. What will the record of YOUR years show — a journey of faith or a list of camps going nowhere?
  • 5. "Drive out ALL the inhabitants" (v.52). God demands complete obedience — no compromise, no coexistence with what is evil. Partial obedience is not obedience at all. What "inhabitants" have you allowed to remain in your life that God has commanded you to drive out?
  • 6. "Barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides" (v.55). What you tolerate today will torment you tomorrow. The sin you refuse to address, the compromise you excuse, the idol you preserve "just in case" — it will become your constant pain. Deal with it now, or it will deal with you.
