1Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:

2And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown:

3And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

4And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:

5And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.

6This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company;

7And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

8And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:

9Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?

10And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?

11For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

12And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:

13Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us?

14Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

15And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

16And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow:

17And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer.

18And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron.

19And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation.

20And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

21Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

22And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

23And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

24Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

25And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

26And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

27So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

28And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.

29If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.

30But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

31And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:

32And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

33They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

34And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

35And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

36And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

37Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.

38The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

39And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:

40To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.

41But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD.

42And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.

43And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation.

44And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

45Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them as in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.

46And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun.

47And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people.

48And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

49Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah.

50And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the plague was stayed.

1Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took [men]:

4And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:

5and he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, In the morning Jehovah will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near unto him.

6This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his company;

7and put fire in them, and put incense upon them before Jehovah to-morrow: and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he [shall be] holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

8And Moses said unto Korah, Hear now, ye sons of Levi:

9[seemeth it but] a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them;

10and that he hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and seek ye the priesthood also?

11Therefore thou and all thy company are gathered together against Jehovah: and Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?

12And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not come up:

13is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us?

14Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

15And Moses was very wroth, and said unto Jehovah, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

16And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow:

17and take ye every man his censer, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before Jehovah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each his censer.

18And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.

19And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the glory of Jehovah appeared unto all the congregation.

20And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

21Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

22And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

23And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

24Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

25And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

26And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

27So they gat them up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

28And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah hath sent me to do all these works; for [I have] not [done them] of mine own mind.

29If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Jehovah hath not sent me.

30But if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then ye shall understand that these men have despised Jehovah.

31And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them;

32and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

33So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

34And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.

35And fire came forth from Jehovah, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

36And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

37Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are holy,

38even the censers of these sinners against their own lives; and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Jehovah; therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

39And Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

40to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, that is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to burn incense before Jehovah; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as Jehovah spake unto him by Moses.

41But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of Jehovah.

42And it came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Jehovah appeared.

43And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting.

44And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

45Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.

46And Moses said unto Aaron, Take they censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from Jehovah; the plague is begun.

47And Aaron took as Moses spake, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.

48And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

49Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah.

50And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the plague was stayed.

1Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, who were Reubenites, took men

2and rebelled against Moses, along with some of the Israelites, 250 leaders of the community, chosen from the assembly, famous men.

3And they assembled against Moses and Aaron, saying to them, “You take too much upon yourselves, seeing that the whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the community of the Lord?”

4When Moses heard it he fell down with his face to the ground.

5Then he said to Korah and to all his company, “In the morning the Lord will make known who are his, and who is holy. He will cause that person to approach him; the person he has chosen he will cause to approach him.

6Do this, Korah, you and all your company: Take censers,

7put fire in them, and set incense on them before the Lord tomorrow, and the man whom the Lord chooses will be holy. You take too much upon yourselves, you sons of Levi!”

8Moses said to Korah, “Listen now, you sons of Levi!

9Does it seem too small a thing to you that the God of Israel has separated you from the community of Israel to bring you near to himself, to perform the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the community to minister to them?

10He has brought you near and all your brothers, the sons of Levi, with you. Do you now seek the priesthood also?

11Therefore you and all your company have assembled together against the Lord! And Aaron—what is he that you murmur against him?”

12Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come up.

13Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of the land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness? Now do you want to make yourself a prince over us?

14Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can blind these men? We will not come up.”

15Moses was very angry, and he said to the Lord, “Have no respect for their offering! I have not taken so much as one donkey from them, nor have I harmed any one of them!”

16Then Moses said to Korah, “You and all your company present yourselves before the Lord—you and they, and Aaron—tomorrow.

17And each of you take his censer, put incense in it, and then each of you present his censer before the Lord: 250 censers, along with you, and Aaron—each of you with his censer.”

18So everyone took his censer, put fire in it, and set incense on it, and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.

19When Korah assembled the whole community against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting, then the glory of the Lord appeared to the whole community.

20The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron:

21“Separate yourselves from among this community, that I may consume them in an instant.”

22Then they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all people, will you be angry with the whole community when only one man sins?”

23So the Lord spoke to Moses:

24“Tell the community: ‘Get away from around the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’”

25Then Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel went after him.

26And he said to the community, “Move away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything they have, lest you be destroyed because of all their sins.”

27So they got away from the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram on every side, and Dathan and Abiram came out and stationed themselves in the entrances of their tents with their wives, their children, and their toddlers.

28Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will.

29If these men die a natural death, or if they share the fate of all men, then the Lord has not sent me.

30But if the Lord does something entirely new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up along with all that they have, and they go down alive to the grave, then you will know that these men have despised the Lord!”

31When he had finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open,

32and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their households, and all Korah’s men, and all their goods.

33They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community.

34All the Israelites who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “What if the earth swallows us too?”

35Then a fire went out from the Lord and devoured the 250 men who offered incense.

36(17:1) The Lord spoke to Moses:

37“Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to pick up the censers out of the flame, for they are holy, and then scatter the coals of fire at a distance.

38As for the censers of these men who sinned at the cost of their lives, they must be made into hammered sheets for covering the altar, because they presented them before the Lord and sanctified them. They will become a sign to the Israelites.”

39So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers presented by those who had been burned up, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar.

40It was a memorial for the Israelites, that no outsider who is not a descendant of Aaron should approach to burn incense before the Lord, that he might not become like Korah and his company—just as the Lord had spoken by the authority of Moses.

41But on the next day the whole community of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the Lord’s people!”

42When the community assembled against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting—and the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared.

43Then Moses and Aaron stood before the tent of meeting.

44The Lord spoke to Moses:

45“Get away from this community, so that I can consume them in an instant!” But they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.

46Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take the censer, put burning coals from the altar in it, place incense on it, and go quickly into the assembly and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the Lord—the plague has begun!”

47So Aaron did as Moses commanded and ran into the middle of the assembly, where the plague was just beginning among the people. So he placed incense on the coals and made atonement for the people.

48He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.

49Now 14,700 people died in the plague, in addition to those who died in the event with Korah.

50Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stopped.

1Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took some men.

2They rose up before Moses, with some of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown.

3They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, “You take too much on yourself, since all the congregation are holy, everyone of them, and Yahweh is among them! Why do you lift yourselves up above Yahweh’s assembly?”

4When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

5He said to Korah and to all his company, “In the morning, Yahweh will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him. Even him whom he shall choose, he will cause to come near to him.

6Do this: take censers, Korah, and all his company;

7and put fire in them, and put incense on them before Yahweh tomorrow. It shall be that the man whom Yahweh chooses, he shall be holy. You have gone too far, you sons of Levi!”

8Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you sons of Levi!

9Is it a small thing to you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of Yahweh’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them;

10and that he has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? Do you seek the priesthood also?

11Therefore you and all your company have gathered together against Yahweh! What is Aaron that you murmur against him?”

12Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, “We won’t come up!

13Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but you must also make yourself a prince over us?

14Moreover you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We won’t come up.”

15Moses was very angry, and said to Yahweh, “Don’t respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them.”

16Moses said to Korah, “You and all your company go before Yahweh, you, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow.

17Each man take his censer, and put incense on them, and each man bring before Yahweh his censer, two hundred fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer.”

18They each took his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on it, and stood at the door of the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.

19Korah assembled all the congregation opposite them to the door of the Tent of Meeting. Yahweh’s glory appeared to all the congregation.

20Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

21“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!”

22They fell on their faces, and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?”

23Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

24“Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Get away from around the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram!’”

25Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

26He spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!”

27So they went away from the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.

28Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works; for they are not from my own mind.

29If these men die the common death of all men, or if they experience what all men experience, then Yahweh hasn’t sent me.

30But if Yahweh makes a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belong to them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then you shall understand that these men have despised Yahweh.”

31As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split apart.

32The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, all of Korah’s men, and all their goods.

33So they, and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol. The earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.

34All Israel that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”

35Fire came out from Yahweh, and devoured the two hundred fifty men who offered the incense.

36Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

37“Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire away from the camp; for they are holy,

38even the censers of those who sinned against their own lives. Let them be beaten into plates for a covering of the altar, for they offered them before Yahweh. Therefore they are holy. They shall be a sign to the children of Israel.”

39Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

40to be a memorial to the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, who isn’t of the offspring of Aaron, would come near to burn incense before Yahweh, that he not be as Korah, and as his company; as Yahweh spoke to him by Moses.

41But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed Yahweh’s people!”

42When the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, They looked toward the Tent of Meeting. Behold, the cloud covered it, and Yahweh’s glory appeared.

43Moses and Aaron came to the front of the Tent of Meeting.

44Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

45“Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!” They fell on their faces.

46Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, and put fire from off the altar in it, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from Yahweh! The plague has begun.”

47Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the middle of the assembly. The plague had already begun among the people. He put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.

48He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

49Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korah.

50Aaron returned to Moses to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and the plague was stopped.

Summary

Korah, Dathan, and Abiram lead a rebellion against Moses and Aaron; the earth swallows the rebels and fire consumes 250 men offering incense.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, written during the wilderness period (approximately 1445-1405 BC). Hebrew title: "Bemidbar" — "In the wilderness." The book records Israel's 38 years of wilderness wandering between Sinai and the Promised Land — a journey that should have taken 11 days (Deuteronomy 1:2) but took 40 years due to unbelief.
Historical Context: Chapter 16 records the most dramatic rebellion against divinely appointed leadership in the Old Testament — Korah's revolt. Korah is a Levite (of the Kohathite clan — the very clan entrusted with carrying the most holy objects of the Tabernacle). He allies with Dathan and Abiram (Reubenites — the firstborn tribe that lost preeminence) and On (who disappears from the narrative, possibly repenting). Together with 250 "princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown" (v.2), they challenge Moses and Aaron's authority: "All the congregation are holy... wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?" (v.3). Their argument sounds democratic and spiritual — but it is rebellion against God's appointed order. God vindicates Moses and Aaron through unprecedented judgment: the earth opens and swallows Korah, Dathan, and Abiram alive; fire from the LORD consumes the 250 incense-offerers. Yet the very next day, the congregation blames Moses and Aaron — "Ye have killed the people of the LORD" (v.41). A plague breaks out; 14,700 die before Aaron runs into the midst with incense and stands "between the dead and the living" (v.48) — one of the most powerful pictures of priestly intercession in Scripture.
Korah's Coalition (vv.1-3): Korah (Levite, Kohathite) joins with Dathan and Abiram (Reubenites) and 250 leaders (v.1-2). Their charge: "Ye take too much upon you" (v.3) — you have seized too much authority. Their theology: "all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them" (v.3). This is partially true — Israel IS a holy nation (Exodus 19:6) — but they twist it to deny God's right to appoint specific leaders and priests. It is egalitarianism weaponized against divine order.
Moses' Response and Challenge (vv.4-11): Moses falls on his face (v.4) — not in defeat but in prayer. He proposes a test: let God choose. Tomorrow, bring censers with incense before the LORD — "the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy" (v.7). Moses turns their accusation back: "ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi" (v.7). He rebukes Korah: "Is it a small thing that God has separated you... to bring you near to himself?" (v.9). Korah already has extraordinary privilege as a Levite — but he wants the priesthood too (v.10). Moses identifies the real target: "you are gathered together against the LORD" (v.11).
Dathan and Abiram's Defiance (vv.12-15): Moses summons Dathan and Abiram; they refuse: "We will not come up" (v.12). Their accusation: Moses brought them from "a land flowing with milk and honey" (Egypt! — they call slavery paradise) "to kill us in the wilderness" and "make thyself altogether a prince over us" (v.13). They blame Moses for not delivering the Promised Land (v.14). Moses is "very wroth" (v.15) and appeals to God: "I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them" (v.15).
The Test and the Judgment (vv.16-35): The 250 bring censers; Korah assembles the whole congregation (v.19). God's glory appears; He says "Separate yourselves... that I may consume them in a moment" (v.21). Moses and Aaron intercede: "Shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?" (v.22). God relents partially — He tells the people to move away from Korah, Dathan, and Abiram (vv.24-26). Moses declares the test: "If the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up... then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD" (v.30). Immediately the ground splits open — Korah, Dathan, Abiram, their households, and all their possessions go down alive into the pit/Sheol (vv.31-33). Fire from the LORD consumes the 250 incense- offerers (v.35). The censers are hammered into plates covering the altar — a permanent memorial warning (vv.36-40).
The People's Continued Rebellion (vv.41-50): The very next day, the congregation accuses Moses and Aaron: "Ye have killed the people of the LORD" (v.41). Astonishing — they just witnessed God's judgment and blame the human leaders. God's glory appears again; plague breaks out (vv.42-45). Moses commands Aaron: "Take a censer... go quickly... make an atonement... the plague is begun" (v.46). Aaron runs into the midst of the dying congregation with incense — "he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed" (v.48). 14,700 die (v.49). Aaron the priest, standing between death and life with the incense of atonement — a breathtaking picture of Christ our High Priest.

  • The wilderness camp: Korah, Dathan, and Abiram rebel. The earth opens and swallows them at their tent doors (v.32). Fire from the LORD consumes the 250 incense-offering men (v.35).
  • "The door of the tabernacle of the congregation" (v.18): The confrontation takes place at the Tabernacle entrance.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes that Korah's rebellion is particularly dangerous because it uses spiritual language to mask ambition. "All the congregation are holy" sounds humble and egalitarian — but it is actually a power grab disguised as theology. He highlights Aaron standing between the dead and the living as one of the most powerful images of intercession in the Bible.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "Korah said, 'All are holy.' It sounded so fair, so democratic, so spiritual. But it was the language of hell dressed in the robes of heaven. For when God appoints, man does not un-appoint. When God sets a man in office, the congregation does not vote him out. Korah wanted Aaron's place — not Aaron's God. He wanted the censer — not the consecration. And the earth opened its mouth. Let every man who covets another's calling beware: the ground beneath ambition is thin."

Reflection

  • 1. "All the congregation are holy" (v.3). Korah's argument sounds humble and egalitarian — but it masks ambition. Beware of using spiritual language to justify rebellion against God-appointed authority. Not all claims of equality are righteous; some are power grabs in disguise.
  • 2. "Is it a small thing?" (v.9). Korah despises his actual calling while coveting another's. He is a Levite — separated to serve God — and it is not enough. Do you despise the role God has given you while envying someone else's? Faithfulness in your calling is better than ambition for another's.
  • 3. Moses' integrity (v.15). "I have not taken one ass from them." When accused, Moses can point to a clean record. Integrity is the best defense against slander. Can you say the same about your stewardship?
  • 4. "The LORD make a new thing" (v.30). God is not limited to ordinary means of judgment. Unprecedented rebellion receives unprecedented response. Do not presume on God's patience or assume His judgments will always look familiar.
  • 5. "Ye have killed the people of the LORD" (v.41). The day after God's dramatic judgment, the people blame Moses. The human capacity to witness God's clear action and still blame human leaders is staggering. Do you blame pastors and leaders for consequences that God Himself has brought?
  • 6. "He stood between the dead and the living" (v.48). Aaron runs TOWARD the plague, not away from it. The true priest/intercessor moves toward danger to save others. Christ did not flee from death — He ran into it to stand between us and judgment. Who are you standing between?
