52Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

53“To these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.

54To the more you shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you shall give the less inheritance. To everyone according to those who were counted of him shall his inheritance be given.

55Notwithstanding, the land shall be divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.

56According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between the more and the fewer.”

57These are those who were counted of the Levites after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites.

58These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites. Kohath became the father of Amram.

59The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.

60To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

61Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before Yahweh.

62Those who were counted of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward; for they were not counted among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.

63These are those who were counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

64But among these there was not a man of them who were counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

65For Yahweh had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” There was not a man left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Summary

A second census numbers the new generation at 601,730 — nearly the same total, confirming God's faithfulness despite forty years of death.

Authorship & Background

Author: Moses. Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, written during the wilderness period (approximately 1445-1405 BC). Hebrew title: "Bemidbar" — "In the wilderness." The book records Israel's 38 years of wilderness wandering between Sinai and the Promised Land — a journey that should have taken 11 days (Deuteronomy 1:2) but took 40 years due to unbelief.
Historical Context: Chapter 26 records the second census of Israel — taken "after the plague" of Baal-Peor (25:9). Nearly 40 years have passed since the first census at Sinai (chapter 1). The entire generation that refused to enter Canaan at Kadesh-barnea has now died in the wilderness, exactly as God decreed (14:29-35). This new census counts the generation that will actually conquer and inherit the Promised Land. The total: 601,730 fighting men — remarkably close to the first census total of 603,550 (a decrease of only 1,820). God has preserved His people despite 38 years of judgment. The census also establishes the basis for land distribution: larger tribes receive larger portions. The chapter ends with the solemn confirmation: "among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered... in the wilderness of Sinai" (v.64) — except Caleb and Joshua. God's word of judgment was fulfilled to the letter.
The Census Commanded (vv.1-4): After the plague, God commands Moses and Eleazar (Aaron's son and successor as high priest) to number all males twenty years and older who can go to war. The location: the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho — they are on the doorstep of the Promised Land.
The Tribes Numbered (vv.5-51): Reuben: 43,730 (was 46,500 — decreased by 2,770) Simeon: 22,200 (was 59,300 — decreased by 37,100! — the largest decline) Gad: 40,500 (was 45,650 — decreased by 5,150) Judah: 76,500 (was 74,600 — increased by 1,900) — largest tribe Issachar: 64,300 (was 54,400 — increased by 9,900) Zebulun: 60,500 (was 57,400 — increased by 3,100) Manasseh: 52,700 (was 32,200 — increased by 20,500! — largest growth) Ephraim: 32,500 (was 40,500 — decreased by 8,000) Benjamin: 45,600 (was 35,400 — increased by 10,200) Dan: 64,400 (was 62,700 — increased by 1,700) Asher: 53,400 (was 41,500 — increased by 11,900) Naphtali: 45,400 (was 53,400 — decreased by 8,000) TOTAL: 601,730 (was 603,550 — net decrease of 1,820)
Notable: Simeon's catastrophic decline (63% loss) likely reflects heavy involvement in the Baal-Peor sin — Zimri was a Simeonite prince (25:14).
Historical Notes Within the Census (vv.8-11): The census pauses to recall Dathan and Abiram's rebellion with Korah (chapter 16) — "they became a warning" (ESV) / "a sign" (KJV). But "the sons of Korah did not die" (v.11) — their descendants later write Psalms (42, 44-49, 84-85, 87-88).
Zelophehad's Daughters Introduced (v.33): Zelophehad of Manasseh "had no sons, but daughters" — Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their case will be addressed in chapter 27.
Land Distribution Principles (vv.52-56): Land is divided by two principles: (1) proportional to tribe size — larger tribes get more land; and (2) by lot — God sovereignly determines location. Size determines quantity; lot determines placement.
The Levites (vv.57-62): Levites numbered separately: 23,000 males from one month old (was 22,000 — increased by 1,000). They receive no land inheritance — God is their inheritance.
The Solemn Conclusion (vv.63-65): "Not one of them was left, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun" (v.65). The entire first generation has perished — God's word of judgment fulfilled completely.

Map & Geography

  • Plains of Moab: The second census is taken here, east of Jordan, preparing for the conquest of Canaan. The old generation has perished in the wilderness.

Commentary

  • Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik notes the remarkable stability of Israel's total population despite 38 years of judgment — God preserved the nation even while disciplining it. He highlights Simeon's dramatic decline as evidence of corporate consequences for tribal sin.
  • Charles Spurgeon: "Here is a new generation standing where their fathers fell. The bones of six hundred thousand unbelievers bleach in the desert sand, and their children stand on the border of Canaan. Let the young take warning: your fathers' unbelief cost them everything. But let them also take courage: God's promise outlives the generation that rejected it. He will have a people in His land. If one generation refuses, He raises another. The promise is not cancelled — only the participants change."

Reflection

  • 1. A new generation on the border (vv.1-4). The old generation died in unbelief; the new generation stands ready to inherit. God's purposes are not defeated by one generation's failure — He raises up another. Are you part of the generation that refuses, or the one that enters?
  • 2. "They became a warning" (v.10). Korah's rebellion is preserved in the census record as a cautionary tale. God memorializes both faith and failure. What "warnings" from the past are you heeding — or ignoring?
  • 3. "The sons of Korah did not die" (v.11). Grace breaks the cycle of generational sin. You are not condemned to repeat your parents' failures. The sons of rebels became psalmists. God can redeem any lineage.
  • 4. Simeon's catastrophic decline (v.14). Sin has corporate consequences. One prince's brazen sin (Zimri, 25:14) may reflect a tribal culture of compromise. The choices of leaders affect entire communities.
  • 5. The land divided by lot AND by proportion (vv.53-56). God's sovereignty (the lot) works alongside practical wisdom (proportional allocation). Divine guidance does not eliminate human responsibility — it works through it.
  • 6. "Not one was left" (v.65). God's word of judgment was fulfilled completely — and so will His word of promise. The same faithfulness that executed judgment now guarantees inheritance. If God keeps His hard words, He certainly keeps His good ones.
