1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man’s name upon his rod.
3And thou shalt write Aaron’s name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.
4And thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony, where I will meet with you.
5And it shall come to pass, that the man’s rod, whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they murmur against you.
6And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
7And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tabernacle of witness.
8And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.
9And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.
10And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron’s rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.
11And Moses did so: as the LORD commanded him, so did he.
12And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.
13Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?
1And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,
2Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers` house, of all their princes according to their fathers` houses, twelve rods: write thou every man`s name upon his rod.
3And thou shalt write Aaron`s name upon the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers` houses.
4And thou shalt lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.
5And it shall come to pass, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.
6And Moses spake unto the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers` houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
7And Moses laid up the rods before Jehovah in the tent of the testimony.
8And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and produced blossoms, and bare ripe almonds.
9And Moses brought out all the rods from before Jehovah unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.
10And Jehovah said unto Moses, Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that thou mayest make an end of their murmurings against me, that they die not.
11Thus did Moses: as Jehovah commanded him, so did he.
12And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone.
13Every one that cometh near, that cometh near unto the tabernacle of Jehovah, dieth: shall we perish all of us?
1The Lord spoke to Moses:
2“Speak to the Israelites, and receive from them a staff from each tribe, one from every tribal leader, twelve staffs; you must write each man’s name on his staff.
3You must write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi; for one staff is for the head of every tribe.
4You must place them in the tent of meeting before the ark of the covenant where I meet with you.
5And the staff of the man whom I choose will blossom; so I will rid myself of the complaints of the Israelites, which they murmur against you.”
6So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each leader, according to their tribes—twelve staffs; the staff of Aaron was among their staffs.
7Then Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the testimony.
8On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony—and the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted, and brought forth buds, and produced blossoms, and yielded almonds!
9So Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his staff.
10The Lord said to Moses, “Bring Aaron’s staff back before the testimony to be preserved for a sign to the rebels, so that you may bring their murmurings to an end before me, that they will not die.”
11So Moses did as the Lord commanded him—this is what he did.
12The Israelites said to Moses, “We are bound to die! We perish, we all perish!
13(17:28) Anyone who even comes close to the tabernacle of the Lord will die! Are we all to die?”
1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2“Speak to the children of Israel, and take rods from them, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod.
3You shall write Aaron’s name on the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers’ houses.
4You shall lay them up in the Tent of Meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.
5It shall happen, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud. I will make the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you, cease from me.”
6Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, a total of twelve rods. Aaron’s rod was among their rods.
7Moses laid up the rods before Yahweh in the Tent of the Testimony.
8On the next day, Moses went into the Tent of the Testimony; and behold, Aaron’s rod for the house of Levi had sprouted, budded, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.
9Moses brought out all the rods from before Yahweh to all the children of Israel. They looked, and each man took his rod.
10Yahweh said to Moses, “Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that you may make an end of their murmurings against me, that they not die.”
11Moses did so. As Yahweh commanded him, so he did.
12The children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, “Behold, we perish! We are undone! We are all undone!
13Everyone who keeps approaching Yahweh’s tabernacle, dies! Will we all perish?”
Summary
God causes Aaron's rod to bud, blossom, and bear almonds — confirming his priesthood and ending the tribal disputes over leadership.
Authorship & Background
Map & Geography
- The wilderness camp: Aaron's rod buds before the Tabernacle — confirming the Levitical priesthood. The 12 rods are placed "before the testimony" in the tent of meeting.
Commentary
- Enduring Word (David Guzik): enduringword.com Guzik emphasizes the four stages of Aaron's rod as a picture of resurrection: sprouting, budding, blossoming, and bearing fruit — all from death. He connects this to Christ's priesthood, which is validated not by genealogy alone but by the power of an indestructible life (Hebrews 7:16). The rod in the ark is a permanent testimony that God's choice is final.
- Charles Spurgeon: "A dead rod bears almonds! Here is the gospel in a picture. What can dead wood do? Nothing. What can dead sinners do? Nothing. But when God breathes upon the dead, life comes. When God chooses a man for service, fruitfulness follows — not from the man's own vitality but from God's quickening power. Aaron's rod did not choose to bud. It was chosen, and therefore it budded. So it is with every true minister, every true believer: 'Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit' (John 15:16)."
Reflection
- 1. Life from death (v.8). A dead stick bears fruit overnight. This is God's signature: resurrection. He brings life from death, fruitfulness from barrenness, hope from despair. Whatever feels dead in your life — your calling, your ministry, your hope — God can make it bud, blossom, and bear fruit in a single night.
- 2. God settles disputes by demonstration (v.5). He does not argue with Korah's theology — He shows His choice through life. The proof of God's calling is fruitfulness, not credentials. Where is the fruit? That is where God's hand is.
- 3. The almond — "the watcher" (v.8). God is watching over His word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:11-12). His promises are not dormant — they are actively being fulfilled, even when you cannot see the process. The almond blooms first, before all other trees. God's faithfulness arrives early.
- 4. "A token against the rebels" (v.10). God preserves evidence so that future generations need not repeat the same rebellion. Do you have "memorial stones" in your life — reminders of God's past faithfulness that prevent you from doubting His present choice?
- 5. "Shall we be consumed with dying?" (v.13). The people's terror is real — but it drives them to need a mediator. Sometimes fear of God's holiness is the beginning of understanding grace. The answer to their question is Christ: "There is therefore now no condemnation" (Romans 8:1).
- 6. Christ the budding rod. Jesus is the dead wood that lives — crucified and buried, then raised to bear eternal fruit. His priesthood is validated not by human appointment but by resurrection power (Hebrews 7:16). He is the Rod of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1) — life from a dead stump.
