Psalms — Chapter 104

1Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.

2Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

3Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:

4Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

5Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

6Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.

7At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.

8They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them.

9Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.

10He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills.

11They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst.

12By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.

13He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works.

14He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;

15And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.

16The trees of the LORD are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;

17Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house.

18The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies.

19He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.

20Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.

21The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God.

22The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.

23Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.

24O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

25So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.

26There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

27These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.

28That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.

29Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

30Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

31The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works.

32He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke.

33I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

34My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD.

35Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the LORD, O my soul. Praise ye the LORD.

1Bless Jehovah, O my soul. O Jehovah my God, thou art very great; Thou art clothed with honor and majesty:

2Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment; Who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain;

3Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters; Who maketh the clouds his chariot; Who walketh upon the wings of the wind;

4Who maketh winds his messengers; Flames of fire his ministers;

5Who laid the foundations of the earth, That it should not be moved for ever.

6Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a vesture; The waters stood above the mountains.

7At thy rebuke they fled; At the voice of thy thunder they hasted away

8(The mountains rose, the valleys sank down) Unto the place which thou hadst founded for them.

9Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; That they turn not again to cover the earth.

10He sendeth forth springs into the valleys; They run among the mountains;

11They give drink to every beast of the field; The wild asses quench their thirst.

12By them the birds of the heavens have their habitation; They sing among the branches.

13He watereth the mountains from his chambers: The earth is filled with the fruit of thy works.

14He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, And herb for the service of man; That he may bring forth food out of the earth,

15And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, [And] oil to make his face to shine, And bread that strengtheneth man`s heart.

16The trees of Jehovah are filled [with moisture], The cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;

17Where the birds make their nests: As for the stork, the fir-trees are her house.

18The high mountains are for the wild goats; The rocks are a refuge for the conies.

19He appointed the moon for seasons: The sun knoweth his going down.

20Thou makest darkness, and it is night, Wherein all the beasts of the forest creep forth.

21The young lions roar after their prey, And seek their food from God.

22The sun ariseth, they get them away, And lay them down in their dens.

23Man goeth forth unto his work And to his labor until the evening.

24O Jehovah, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all: The earth is full of thy riches.

25Yonder is the sea, great and wide, Wherein are things creeping innumerable, Both small and great beasts.

26There go the ships; There is leviathan, whom thou hast formed to play therein.

27These wait all for thee, That thou mayest give them their food in due season.

28Thou givest unto them, they gather; Thou openest thy hand, they are satisfied with good.

29Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled; Thou takest away their breath, they die, And return to their dust.

30Thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created; And thou renewest the face of the ground.

31Let the glory of Jehovah endure for ever; Let Jehovah rejoice in his works:

32Who looketh on the earth, and it trembleth; He toucheth the mountains, and they smoke.

33I will sing unto Jehovah as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have any being.

34Let thy meditation be sweet unto him: I will rejoice in Jehovah.

35Let sinners be consumed out of the earth. And let the wicked be no more. Bless Jehovah, O my soul. Praise ye Jehovah. Psalm 105

1Praise the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are magnificent. You are robed in splendor and majesty.

2He covers himself with light as if it were a garment. He stretches out the skies like a tent curtain

3and lays the beams of the upper rooms of his palace on the rain clouds. He makes the clouds his chariot and travels on the wings of the wind.

4He makes the winds his messengers and the flaming fire his attendant.

5He established the earth on its foundations; it will never be moved.

6The watery deep covered it like a garment; the waters reached above the mountains.

7Your shout made the waters retreat; at the sound of your thunderous voice they hurried off—

8as the mountains rose up and the valleys went down— to the place you appointed for them.

9You set up a boundary for them that they could not cross, so that they would not cover the earth again.

10He turns springs into streams; they flow between the mountains.

11They provide water for all the animals in the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst.

12The birds of the sky live beside them; they chirp among the bushes.

13He waters the mountains from the upper rooms of his palace; the earth is full of the fruit you cause to grow.

14He provides grass for the cattle and crops for people to cultivate, so they can produce food from the ground

15as well as wine that makes people glad, and olive oil to make their faces shine as well as bread that sustains them.

16The trees of the Lord receive all the rain they need, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted,

17where the birds make nests near the evergreens in which the herons live.

18The wild goats live in the high mountains; the rock badgers find safety in the cliffs.

19He made the moon to mark the months, and the sun sets according to a regular schedule.

20You make it dark and night comes, during which all the beasts of the forest prowl around.

21The lions roar for prey, seeking their food from God.

22When the sun rises, they withdraw and sleep in their dens.

23People then go out to do their work, and they labor until evening.

24How many living things you have made, O Lord! You have exhibited great skill in making all of them; the earth is full of the living things you have made.

25Over here is the deep, wide sea, which teems with innumerable swimming creatures, living things both small and large.

26The ships travel there, and over here swims the whale you made to play in it.

27All your creatures wait for you to provide them with food on a regular basis.

28You give food to them and they receive it; you open your hand and they are filled with food.

29When you ignore them, they panic. When you take away their life’s breath, they die and return to dust.

30When you send your life-giving breath, they are created, and you replenish the surface of the ground.

31May the splendor of the Lord endure. May the Lord find pleasure in the living things he has made.

32He looks down on the earth and it shakes; he touches the mountains and they start to smolder.

33I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God as long as I exist.

34May my thoughts be pleasing to him. I will rejoice in the Lord.

35May sinners disappear from the earth, and the wicked vanish. Praise the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord.

1Bless Yahweh, my soul. Yahweh, my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty.

2He covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain.

3He lays the beams of his rooms in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind.

4He makes his messengers winds; his servants flames of fire.

5He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved forever.

6You covered it with the deep as with a cloak. The waters stood above the mountains.

7At your rebuke they fled. At the voice of your thunder they hurried away.

8The mountains rose, the valleys sank down, to the place which you had assigned to them.

9You have set a boundary that they may not pass over; that they don’t turn again to cover the earth.

10He sends springs into the valleys. They run among the mountains.

11They give drink to every animal of the field. The wild donkeys quench their thirst.

12The birds of the sky nest by them. They sing among the branches.

13He waters the mountains from his rooms. The earth is filled with the fruit of your works.

14He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may produce food out of the earth:

15wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face to shine, and bread that strengthens man’s heart.

16Yahweh’s trees are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon, which he has planted;

17where the birds make their nests. The stork makes its home in the cypress trees.

18The high mountains are for the wild goats. The rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.

19He appointed the moon for seasons. The sun knows when to set.

20You make darkness, and it is night, in which all the animals of the forest prowl.

21The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their food from God.

22The sun rises, and they steal away, and lay down in their dens.

23Man goes out to his work, to his labor until the evening.

24Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom have you made them all. The earth is full of your riches.

25There is the sea, great and wide, in which are innumerable living things, both small and large animals.

26There the ships go, and leviathan, whom you formed to play there.

27These all wait for you, that you may give them their food in due season.

28You give to them; they gather. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good.

29You hide your face: they are troubled; you take away their breath: they die, and return to the dust.

30You send out your Spirit and they are created. You renew the face of the ground.

31Let Yahweh’s glory endure forever. Let Yahweh rejoice in his works.

32He looks at the earth, and it trembles. He touches the mountains, and they smoke.

33I will sing to Yahweh as long as I live. I will sing praise to my God while I have any being.

34Let my meditation be sweet to him. I will rejoice in Yahweh.

35Let sinners be consumed out of the earth. Let the wicked be no more. Bless Yahweh, my soul. Praise Yah!

Summary

A creation psalm — a grand poetic celebration of God's wisdom in sustaining all creation: light, waters, mountains, springs, animals, the sea, and Leviathan — all look to God to give them food in due season.

Authorship & Background

Author: Multiple authors — primarily David (73 psalms attributed), plus Asaph (12), Sons of Korah (11), Solomon (2), Moses (1), Heman (1), Ethan (1), and anonymous. The Psalter was compiled over approximately 1000 years and served as Israel's hymnal and prayer book. The book is divided into five 'books' (1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, 107-150), paralleling the five books of Moses. Key themes: worship, lament, praise, trust, kingship, creation, wisdom, Messianic prophecy, and the full range of human emotion brought before God.
Classification: Creation Hymn / Nature Psalm Attributed Author: Anonymous (no superscription) Key Themes: God as Creator and Sustainer of all life, the majesty of God in nature, divine providence over all creatures, the order and beauty of creation, dependence of all life on God, praise arising from contemplation of creation
Historical Context: Psalm 104 is the great "Creation Psalm" — a poetic meditation on God's glory displayed in the natural world. It follows Genesis 1 in rough order: light (v.2), sky/waters (vv.2-4), land (vv.5-9), water/vegetation (vv.10-18), time (vv.19-23), sea (vv.25-26). It is the companion to Psalm 103 — both begin with "Bless the LORD, O my soul." Psalm 103 celebrates God's grace toward people; Psalm 104 celebrates God's glory in creation. Some scholars note parallels with the Egyptian Hymn to Aten (Akhenaten), though the theology is radically different — Psalm 104 celebrates the Creator, not the sun. This psalm has been called "the most magnificent nature poem ever written."
Structure:
  • God's Majesty in Light and Sky (vv.1-4)
  • Foundation of the Earth and Waters (vv.5-9)
  • Provision for All Creatures (vv.10-18)
  • The Order of Day and Night (vv.19-23)
  • Wonder at the Diversity of Creation (vv.24-26)
  • All Life Depends on God (vv.27-30)
  • Praise and Prayer (vv.31-35)

Map & Geography

  • Lebanon (v.16): Region north of Israel known for its cedar forests.

Reflection

  • 1. Look at creation and see the Creator (vv.1-4). Nature is not God, but nature reveals God. Light, wind, fire, heavens — all of it is His garment, His chariot, His handiwork. Creation is meant to provoke worship.
  • 2. God provides for EVERYTHING (vv.10-28). From wild donkeys to birds to goats to humans to sea creatures — God opens His hand and fills them all with good. If He feeds lions and leviathan, He will certainly feed you.
  • 3. Wisdom underlies all creation (v.24). The universe is not random. It is designed with manifold wisdom. Every discovery of science is a footnote to this verse.
  • 4. All life depends on God's breath (vv.29-30). When He hides His face, creatures are troubled. When He withdraws breath, they die. We live moment by moment by His sustaining will. Independence from God is an illusion.
  • 5. The proper response: sing and meditate (vv.33-34). Contemplation of creation should produce two things — singing and meditation. Not just facts but worship. Not just knowledge but sweetness. "My meditation of him shall be sweet."
