Psalms — Chapter 94

1O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
2Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.
3LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?
4How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?
5They break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thine heritage.
6They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
7Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
8Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
11The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
12Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;
13That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.
14For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
15But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.
16Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
18When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.
19In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
20Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?
21They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.
22But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.
23And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off.
1O Jehovah, thou God to whom vengeance belongeth, Thou God to whom vengeance belongeth, shine forth.
2Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: Render to the proud [their] desert.
3Jehovah, how long shall the wicked, How long shall the wicked triumph?
4They prate, they speak arrogantly: All the workers of iniquity boast themselves.
5They break in pieces thy people, O Jehovah, And afflict thy heritage.
6They slay the widow and the sojourner, And murder the fatherless.
7And they say, Jehovah will not see, Neither will the God of Jacob consider.
8Consider, ye brutish among the people; And ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? He that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10He that chastiseth the nations, shall not he correct, [Even] he that teacheth man knowledge?
11Jehovah knoweth the thoughts of man, That they are vanity.
12Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Jehovah, And teachest out of thy law;
13That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit be digged for the wicked.
14For Jehovah will not cast off his people, Neither will he forsake his inheritance.
15For judgment shall return unto righteousness; And all the upright in heart shall follow it.
16Who will rise up for me against the evil-doers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17Unless Jehovah had been my help, My soul had soon dwelt in silence.
18When I said, My foot slippeth; Thy lovingkindness, O Jehovah, held me up.
19In the multitude of my thoughts within me Thy comforts delight my soul.
20Shall the throne of wickedness have fellowship with thee, Which frameth mischief by statute?
21They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, And condemn the innocent blood.
22But Jehovah hath been my high tower, And my God the rock of my refuge.
23And he hath brought upon them their own iniquity, And will cut them off in their own wickedness; Jehovah our God will cut them off. Psalm 95
1O Lord, the God who avenges! O God who avenges, reveal your splendor.
2Rise up, O judge of the earth. Pay back the proud.
3O Lord, how long will the wicked, how long will the wicked celebrate?
4They spew out threats and speak defiantly; all the evildoers boast.
5O Lord, they crush your people; they oppress the nation that belongs to you.
6They kill the widow and the resident foreigner, and they murder the fatherless.
7Then they say, “The Lord does not see this; the God of Jacob does not take notice of it.”
8Take notice of this, you ignorant people. You fools, when will you ever understand?
9Does the one who makes the human ear not hear? Does the one who forms the human eye not see?
10Does the one who disciplines the nations not punish? He is the one who imparts knowledge to human beings!
11The Lord knows that peoples’ thoughts are morally bankrupt.
12How blessed is the one whom you instruct, O Lord, the one whom you teach from your law
13in order to protect him from times of trouble, until the wicked are destroyed.
14Certainly the Lord does not forsake his people; he does not abandon the nation that belongs to him.
15For justice will prevail, and all the morally upright will be vindicated.
16Who will rise up to defend me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against the evildoers?
17If the Lord had not helped me, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
18If I say, “My foot is slipping,” your loyal love, O Lord, supports me.
19When worries threaten to overwhelm me, your soothing touch makes me happy.
20Cruel rulers are not your allies, those who make oppressive laws.
21They conspire against the blameless and condemn to death the innocent.
22But the Lord will protect me, and my God will shelter me.
23He will pay them back for their sin. He will destroy them because of their evil; the Lord our God will destroy them.
1Yahweh, you God to whom vengeance belongs, you God to whom vengeance belongs, shine out.
2Rise up, you judge of the earth. Pay back the proud what they deserve.
3Yahweh, how long will the wicked, how long will the wicked triumph?
4They pour out arrogant words. All the evildoers boast.
5They break your people in pieces, Yahweh, and afflict your heritage.
6They kill the widow and the alien, and murder the fatherless.
7They say, “Yah will not see, neither will Jacob’s God consider.”
8Consider, you senseless among the people; you fools, when will you be wise?
9He who implanted the ear, won’t he hear? He who formed the eye, won’t he see?
10He who disciplines the nations, won’t he punish? He who teaches man knows.
11Yahweh knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile.
12Blessed is the man whom you discipline, Yah, and teach out of your law;
13that you may give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked.
14For Yahweh won’t reject his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
15For judgment will return to righteousness. All the upright in heart shall follow it.
16Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against the evildoers?
17Unless Yahweh had been my help, my soul would have soon lived in silence.
18When I said, “My foot is slipping!” Your loving kindness, Yahweh, held me up.
19In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.
20Shall the throne of wickedness have fellowship with you, which brings about mischief by statute?
21They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.
22But Yahweh has been my high tower, my God, the rock of my refuge.
23He has brought on them their own iniquity, and will cut them off in their own wickedness. Yahweh, our God, will cut them off.
Summary
A lament calling for divine justice — 'O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth, show thyself'; how long will the wicked triumph and crush God's people? The LORD will not forsake His inheritance or let the unjust prevail.

Reflection
- 1. God created perception — of course He perceives (v.9). The atheist's assumption that God doesn't see is absurd. He made ears; He hears. He made eyes; He sees. Your oppressor is observed. Every act is witnessed.
- 2. Divine discipline is blessing in disguise (v.12). If God is correcting you, He values you. Uncontested sin means neglect. Correction means investment. Receive discipline as education.
- 3. God's comfort meets anxious thoughts (v.19). You will have many thoughts — worried, spinning, overwhelming. God does not promise to eliminate them but to insert His comforts INTO them. His consolations delight the soul even amid the storm.
- 4. Legalized injustice will not stand (v.20). When governments "frame mischief by law," they do not thereby gain God's endorsement. No statute can make injustice just. God opposes systemic evil just as He opposes personal evil.
