Psalms — Chapter 69

1Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
2I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
3I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
5O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.
6Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.
7Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
8I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.
9For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
10When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.
11I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.
12They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
13But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.
14Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.
16Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.
17And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.
18Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.
19Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.
20Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
21They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
22Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
23Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.
24Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.
25Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
26For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.
27Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.
28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.
29But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
33For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.
34Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
35For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
36The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.
1Save me, O God; For the waters are come in unto my soul.
2I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
3I am weary with my crying; my throat is dried: Mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: They that would cut me off, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: That which I took not away I have to restore.
5O God, thou knowest my foolishness; And my sins are not hid from thee.
6Let not them that wait for thee be put to shame through me, O Lord Jehovah of hosts: Let not those that seek thee be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.
7Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; Shame hath covered my face.
8I am become a stranger unto my brethren, And an alien unto my mother`s children.
9For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up; And the reproaches of them that reproach thee are fallen upon me.
10When I wept, [and chastened] my soul with fasting, That was to my reproach.
11When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword unto them.
12They that sit in the gate talk of me; And [I am] the song of the drunkards.
13But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Jehovah, in an acceptable time: O God, in the abundance of thy lovingkindness, Answer me in the truth of thy salvation.
14Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: Let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15Let not the waterflood overwhelm me, Neither let the deep shallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth upon me.
16Answer me, O Jehovah; for thy lovingkindness is good: According to the multitude of thy tender mercies turn thou unto me.
17And hide not thy face from thy servant; For I am in distress; answer me speedily.
18Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: Ransom me because of mine enemies.
19Thou knowest my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor: Mine adversaries are all before thee.
20Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.
21They gave me also gall for my food; And in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
22Let their table before them become a snare; And when they are in peace, [let it become] a trap.
23Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see; And make their loins continually to shake.
24Pour out thine indignation upon them, And let the fierceness of thine anger overtake them.
25Let their habitation be desolate; Let none dwell in their tents.
26For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; And they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded.
27Add iniquity unto their iniquity; And let them not come into thy righteousness.
28Let them be blotted out of the book of life, And not be written with the righteous.
29But I am poor and sorrowful: Let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31And it will please Jehovah better than an ox, [Or] a bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32The meek have seen it, and are glad: Ye that seek after God, let your heart live.
33For Jehovah heareth the needy, And despiseth not his prisoners.
34Let heaven and earth praise him, The seas, and everything that moveth therein.
35For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah; And they shall abide there, and have it in possession.
36The seed also of his servants shall inherit it; And they that love his name shall dwell therein. Psalm 70 For the Chief Musician. [A Psalm] of David; to bring to remembrance.
1For the music director, according to the tune of “Lilies”; by David. Deliver me, O God, for the water has reached my neck.
2I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; I am in deep water, and the current overpowers me.
3I am exhausted from shouting for help. My throat is sore; my eyes grow tired from looking for my God.
4Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head. Those who want to destroy me, my enemies for no reason, outnumber me. They make me repay what I did not steal.
5O God, you are aware of my foolish sins; my guilt is not hidden from you.
6Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me, O Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me, O God of Israel.
7For I suffer humiliation for your sake and am thoroughly disgraced.
8My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner.
9Certainly zeal for your house consumes me; I endure the insults of those who insult you.
10I weep and refrain from eating food, which causes others to insult me.
11I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me.
12Those who sit at the city gate gossip about me; drunkards mock me in their songs.
13O Lord, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me. O God, because of your great loyal love, answer me with your faithful deliverance.
14Rescue me from the mud. Don’t let me sink. Deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep water.
15Don’t let the current overpower me. Don’t let the deep swallow me up. Don’t let the Pit devour me.
16Answer me, O Lord, for your loyal love is good. Because of your great compassion, turn toward me.
17Do not ignore your servant, for I am in trouble. Answer me right away.
18Come near me and redeem me. Because of my enemies, rescue me.
19You know how I am insulted, humiliated, and disgraced; you can see all my enemies.
20Their insults are painful and make me lose heart; I look for sympathy, but receive none, for comforters, but find none.
21They put bitter poison into my food, and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink.
22May their dining table become a trap before them. May it be a snare for that group of friends.
23May their eyes be blinded. Make them shake violently.
24Pour out your judgment on them. May your raging anger overtake them.
25May their camp become desolate, their tents uninhabited.
26For they harass the one whom you discipline; they spread the news about the suffering of those whom you punish.
27Hold them accountable for all their sins. Do not vindicate them.
28May their names be deleted from the scroll of the living. Do not let their names be listed with the godly.
29I am oppressed and suffering. O God, deliver and protect me.
30I will sing praises to God’s name. I will magnify him as I give him thanks.
31That will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hooves.
32The oppressed look on—let them rejoice. You who seek God, may you be encouraged.
33For the Lord listens to the needy; he does not despise his captive people.
34Let the heavens and the earth praise him, along with the seas and everything that swims in them.
35For God will deliver Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, and his people will again live in them and possess Zion.
36The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who are loyal to him will live in it.
1Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck!
2I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
3I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
4Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I didn’t take away.
5God, you know my foolishness. My sins aren’t hidden from you.
6Don’t let those who wait for you be shamed through me, Lord Yahweh of Armies. Don’t let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of Israel.
7Because for your sake, I have borne reproach. Shame has covered my face.
8I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s children.
9For the zeal of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

11When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.
12Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.
13But as for me, my prayer is to you, Yahweh, in an acceptable time. God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
14Deliver me out of the mire, and don’t let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15Don’t let the flood waters overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up. Don’t let the pit shut its mouth on me.

20Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; for comforters, but I found none.
21They also gave me gall for my food. In my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.
22Let their table before them become a snare. May it become a retribution and a trap.
23Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can’t see. Let their backs be continually bent.
24Pour out your indignation on them. Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them.
25Let their habitation be desolate. Let no one dwell in their tents.
26For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt.
27Charge them with crime upon crime. Don’t let them come into your righteousness.
28Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.
29But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.
30I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31It will please Yahweh better than an ox, or a bull that has horns and hoofs.
32The humble have seen it, and are glad. You who seek after God, let your heart live.
33For Yahweh hears the needy, and doesn’t despise his captive people.
34Let heaven and earth praise him; the seas, and everything that moves therein!
35For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah. They shall settle there, and own it.
36The children also of his servants shall inherit it. Those who love his name shall dwell therein.

Reflection
- 1. Suffering for God's sake is real suffering (v.7). "For thy sake I have borne reproach." Following God does not immunize you from pain — sometimes it causes pain. But suffering for God's sake has meaning that random suffering does not.
- 2. The deepest pain is uncomforted pain (v.20). Looking for pity and finding none. Looking for comforters and finding none. If you know someone suffering, be present. Your presence may be the difference between survivable and unbearable grief.
- 3. Christ fulfilled this psalm in His passion. Every element of David's suffering finds its ultimate expression in Jesus: the hatred without cause, the zeal for God's house, the vinegar and gall, the broken heart. Our Savior knows the depth of human suffering from the inside.
- 4. Praise is better than sacrifice (vv.30-31). God doesn't want your performance — He wants your heart. A genuine song of praise from a broken person pleases God more than a thousand ritually perfect offerings from a cold heart.
