1The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

2Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

3A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.

4His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.

5The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

7Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

8Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.

9For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.

10Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

11Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

12Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Summary

An enthronement psalm — 'The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice'; clouds and darkness surround Him, fire goes before Him, mountains melt like wax; Zion is glad because of His judgments. Worship Him, all ye gods.

Authorship & Background

Author: Multiple authors — primarily David (73 psalms attributed), plus Asaph (12), Sons of Korah (11), Solomon (2), Moses (1), Heman (1), Ethan (1), and anonymous. The Psalter was compiled over approximately 1000 years and served as Israel's hymnal and prayer book. The book is divided into five 'books' (1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, 107-150), paralleling the five books of Moses. Key themes: worship, lament, praise, trust, kingship, creation, wisdom, Messianic prophecy, and the full range of human emotion brought before God.
Classification: Enthronement / Theophany Psalm Attributed Author: Anonymous Key Themes: The LORD reigns, theophany in fire and lightning, creation trembles before God, shame of idol-worshippers, Zion's gladness, loving the LORD means hating evil, light sown for the righteous
Historical Context: Another enthronement psalm celebrating God's kingship with theophanic imagery (fire, lightning, melting mountains — reminiscent of Sinai in Exodus 19). Hebrews 1:6 may quote v.7 ("worship him, all ye gods") in reference to angels worshipping Christ, giving this psalm Christological significance. The psalm moves from cosmic terror before God's glory to Zion's gladness at His judgments to the practical command: "Ye that love the LORD, hate evil" (v.10). The final image — "light is sown for the righteous" (v.11) — is beautiful: light as a seed planted now, to be harvested as joy later.
Structure:
  • The LORD Reigns: Earth Rejoice (v.1)
  • Theophanic Glory (vv.2-6)
  • Idol-Worshippers Shamed (v.7)
  • Zion Glad at God's Judgments (vv.8-9)
  • The Righteous: Love God, Hate Evil (vv.10-12)

Map & Geography

  • Zion (v.8): The hill on which Jerusalem/the Temple stood; often used poetically for God's dwelling.

Reflection

  • 1. God is simultaneously hidden and just (v.2). Clouds surround Him — you can't always SEE His ways. But His throne is righteous — you can always TRUST His character, even when His methods are obscured.
  • 2. Loving God and hating evil are inseparable (v.10). Tolerance of evil is not love — it is betrayal of love. If you love the LORD, you must actively oppose what He opposes. Love without hatred of evil is sentimentality, not devotion.
  • 3. Light is already planted for your future (v.11). Even if today is dark, light has been SOWN. It is in the ground, growing. Gladness is coming for the upright. Trust the seed underground. The harvest is certain.
