4Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.

Summary

A Song of Ascents (pilgrimage psalm of trust) — 'I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills; from whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the LORD'; He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.

Authorship & Background

Author: Multiple authors — primarily David (73 psalms attributed), plus Asaph (12), Sons of Korah (11), Solomon (2), Moses (1), Heman (1), Ethan (1), and anonymous. The Psalter was compiled over approximately 1000 years and served as Israel's hymnal and prayer book. The book is divided into five 'books' (1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, 107-150), paralleling the five books of Moses. Key themes: worship, lament, praise, trust, kingship, creation, wisdom, Messianic prophecy, and the full range of human emotion brought before God.
Classification: Song of Ascents / Psalm of Trust Attributed Author: Anonymous (superscription: "A Song of degrees/ascents") Key Themes: God as keeper/protector, divine watchfulness that never sleeps, help from the Creator, protection from all evil, preservation in all circumstances, total security in God
Historical Context: Psalm 121 is the second Song of Ascents and one of the most beloved psalms in all of Scripture. It was sung by pilgrims approaching Jerusalem, looking up at the hills ahead. The "hills" likely refer to the mountains surrounding Jerusalem (or possibly the hills where pagan shrines were located — in which case the answer is: help comes NOT from the hills/shrines but from the LORD). The psalm uses the word "keep/preserve" (Hebrew "shamar") six times in eight verses — the most concentrated expression of divine protection in the Psalter. It likely functioned as a blessing pronounced by a priest over departing pilgrims — a divine guarantee for the journey home.
Structure:
  • The Pilgrim's Question (v.1)
  • The Pilgrim's Answer (v.2)
  • The Keeper Who Never Sleeps (vv.3-4)
  • Complete Protection (vv.5-6)
  • Preservation Always (vv.7-8)

Reflection

  • 1. Lift your eyes (v.1). When overwhelmed, look UP. Not at the problem, not at the obstacle — up to the hills where God dwells. Direction of gaze determines direction of hope.
  • 2. Your help is from the MAKER (v.2). The One who made heaven and earth is your helper. He is not inadequate to your problem. Whatever you face, He made something bigger.
  • 3. He never sleeps (vv.3-4). When you're awake at 3 AM with anxiety, God is awake too — not anxious but watching, keeping, guarding. You can sleep BECAUSE He doesn't.
  • 4. All evil, all time (vv.7-8). Every exit and entrance. Every journey and return. From now until forever. There is no gap in God's protective care. No situation where He is absent.
  • 5. This psalm is the ultimate travel blessing. Whether you're walking to Jerusalem or walking through life — the Keeper of Israel watches over your every step.
