Psalms — Chapter 63

1O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
2To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
3Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
4Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
5My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
6When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
7Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
8My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
9But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.
11But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
1O God, thou art my God; earnestly will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee, In a dry and weary land, where no water is.
2So have I looked upon thee in the sanctuary, To see thy power and thy glory.
3Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise thee.
4So will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
5My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; And my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips;
6When I remember thee upon my bed, [And] meditate on thee in the night-watches.
7For thou hast been my help, And in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
8My soul followeth hard after thee: Thy right hand upholdeth me.
9But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10They shall be given over to the power of the sword: They shall be a portion for foxes.
11But the king shall rejoice in God: Every one that sweareth by him shall glory; For the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped. Psalm 64 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
1A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness. O God, you are my God. I long for you. My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
2Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you, and witnessed your power and splendor.
3Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you.
4For this reason I will praise you while I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
5As with choice meat you satisfy my soul. My mouth joyfully praises you,
6whenever I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours.
7For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice.
8My soul pursues you; your right hand upholds me.
9Enemies seek to destroy my life, but they will descend into the depths of the earth.
10Each one will be handed over to the sword; their corpses will be eaten by jackals.
11But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who takes oaths in his name will boast, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up.
1God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.
2So I have seen you in the sanctuary, watching your power and your glory.
3Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you.
4So I will bless you while I live. I will lift up my hands in your name.
5My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,
6when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches.
7For you have been my help. I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.
8My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up.
9But those who seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10They shall be given over to the power of the sword. They shall be jackal food.
11But the king shall rejoice in God. Everyone who swears by him will praise him, for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced.

Reflection
- 1. Let physical needs remind you of spiritual needs (v.1). David's physical thirst in the desert became a lens for understanding his deeper thirst for God. Don't just meet physical needs — let them point you to the deeper need only God satisfies.
- 2. God's love is better than life (v.3). This is the ultimate test: if you lost everything but God's love, would you still praise? David says yes. God's steadfast love outweighs all that life offers — because it outlasts life itself.
- 3. Satisfaction in God is feast-level, not merely sufficient (v.5). God doesn't just keep your soul alive — He makes it fat with abundance. The life of devotion is not spiritual starvation but spiritual feasting.
- 4. Cling to God AND be held by God (v.8). This is the beautiful paradox of the Christian life: we pursue God with all our might AND discover that His right hand has been holding us all along. Your clinging and His upholding are simultaneous.
- 5. Seek God in the night watches (v.6). When you can't sleep, don't reach for your phone — reach for God. Sleepless hours can become the richest hours of meditation and intimacy.
