1O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.

2Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.

3Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.

4Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.

5Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

6O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen.

7He is the LORD our God: his judgments are in all the earth.

8He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.

9Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac;

10And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant:

11Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance:

12When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.

13When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;

14He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes;

15Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

16Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread.

17He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant:

18Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron:

19Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him.

20The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free.

21He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:

22To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom.

23Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

24And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.

25He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants.

26He sent Moses his servant; and Aaron whom he had chosen.

27They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.

28He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled not against his word.

29He turned their waters into blood, and slew their fish.

30Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, in the chambers of their kings.

31He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies, and lice in all their coasts.

32He gave them hail for rain, and flaming fire in their land.

33He smote their vines also and their fig trees; and brake the trees of their coasts.

34He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillers, and that without number,

35And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground.

36He smote also all the firstborn in their land, the chief of all their strength.

37He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

38Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them.

39He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.

40The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

41He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river.

42For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant.

43And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness:

44And gave them the lands of the heathen: and they inherited the labour of the people;

45That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the LORD.

1Oh give thanks unto Jehovah, call upon his name; Make known among the peoples his doings.

2Sing unto him, sing praises unto him; Talk ye of all his marvelous works.

3Glory ye in his holy name: Let the heart of them rejoice that seek Jehovah.

4Seek ye Jehovah and his strength; Seek his face evermore.

5Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, His wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,

6O ye seed of Abraham his servant, Ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

7He is Jehovah our God: His judgments are in all the earth.

14He suffered no man to do them wrong; Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,

15[Saying], Touch not mine anointed ones, And do my prophets no harm.

19Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of Jehovah tried him.

20The king sent and loosed him; Even the ruler of peoples, and let him go free.

21He made him lord of his house, And ruler of all his substance;

22To bind his princes at his pleasure, And teach his elders wisdom.

23Israel also came into Egypt; And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

24And he increased his people greatly, And made them stronger than their adversaries.

25He turned their heart to hate his people, To deal subtly with his servants.

27They set among them his signs, And wonders in the land of Ham.

28He sent darkness, and made it dark; And they rebelled not against his words.

44And he gave them the lands of the nations; And they took the labor of the peoples in possession:

45That they might keep his statutes, And observe his laws. Praise ye Jehovah. Psalm 106

1Give thanks to the Lord. Call on his name. Make known his accomplishments among the nations.

2Sing to him. Make music to him. Tell about all his miraculous deeds.

3Boast about his holy name. Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

4Seek the Lord and the strength he gives. Seek his presence continually.

5Recall the miraculous deeds he performed, his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed,

6O children of Abraham, God’s servant, you descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen ones.

7He is the Lord our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth.

8He always remembers his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations—

9the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac.

10He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise,

11saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.”

12When they were few in number, just a very few, and resident foreigners within it,

13they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another.

14He let no one oppress them; he disciplined kings for their sake,

15saying, “Don’t touch my chosen ones. Don’t harm my prophets.”

16He called down a famine upon the earth; he cut off all the food supply.

17He sent a man ahead of them— Joseph was sold as a servant.

18The shackles hurt his feet; his neck was placed in an iron collar,

19until the time when his prediction came true. The Lord’s word proved him right.

20The king authorized his release; the ruler of nations set him free.

21He put him in charge of his palace, and made him manager of all his property,

22giving him authority to imprison his officials and to teach his advisers.

23Israel moved to Egypt; Jacob lived for a time in the land of Ham.

24The Lord made his people very fruitful and made them more numerous than their enemies.

25He caused the Egyptians to hate his people and to mistreat his servants.

26He sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.

27They executed his miraculous signs among them and his amazing deeds in the land of Ham.

28He made it dark; Moses and Aaron did not disobey his orders.

29He turned the Egyptians’ water into blood and killed their fish.

30Their land was overrun by frogs, which even got into the rooms of their kings.

31He ordered flies to come; gnats invaded their whole territory.

32He sent hail along with the rain; there was lightning in their land.

33He destroyed their vines and fig trees and broke the trees throughout their territory.

34He ordered locusts to come, innumerable grasshoppers.

35They ate all the vegetation in their land and devoured the crops of their fields.

36He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of their reproductive power.

37He brought his people out enriched with silver and gold; none of his tribes stumbled.

38Egypt was happy when they left, for they were afraid of them.

39He spread out a cloud for a cover, and provided a fire to light up the night.

40They asked for food, and he sent quail; he satisfied them with food from the sky.

41He opened up a rock and water flowed out; a river ran through dry regions.

42Yes, he remembered the sacred promise he made to Abraham his servant.

43When he led his people out, they rejoiced; his chosen ones shouted with joy.

44He handed the territory of nations over to them, and they took possession of what other peoples had produced,

45so that they might keep his commands and obey his laws. Praise the Lord.

1Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Make his doings known among the peoples.

2Sing to him, sing praises to him! Tell of all his marvelous works.

3Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.

4Seek Yahweh and his strength. Seek his face forever more.

5Remember his marvelous works that he has done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,

6you offspring of Abraham, his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

7He is Yahweh, our God. His judgments are in all the earth.

8He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,

9the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac,

10and confirmed the same to Jacob for a statute; to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

11saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance”;

12when they were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners in it.

13They went about from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people.

15“Don’t touch my anointed ones! Do my prophets no harm!”

16He called for a famine on the land. He destroyed the food supplies.

17He sent a man before them. Joseph was sold for a slave.

18They bruised his feet with shackles. His neck was locked in irons,

19until the time that his word happened, and Yahweh’s word proved him true.

20The king sent and freed him; even the ruler of peoples, and let him go free.

21He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all of his possessions;

22to discipline his princes at his pleasure, and to teach his elders wisdom.

23Israel also came into Egypt. Jacob lived in the land of Ham.

24He increased his people greatly, and made them stronger than their adversaries.

25He turned their heart to hate his people, to conspire against his servants.

26He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.

27They performed miracles among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.

28He sent darkness, and made it dark. They didn’t rebel against his words.

29He turned their waters into blood, and killed their fish.

30Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the rooms of their kings.

31He spoke, and swarms of flies came, and lice in all their borders.

32He gave them hail for rain, with lightning in their land.

33He struck their vines and also their fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.

34He spoke, and the locusts came, and the grasshoppers, without number,

35ate up every plant in their land; and ate up the fruit of their ground.

36He struck also all the firstborn in their land, the first fruits of all their manhood.

37He brought them out with silver and gold. There was not one feeble person among his tribes.

38Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen on them.

39He spread a cloud for a covering, fire to give light in the night.

40They asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of the sky.

41He opened the rock, and waters gushed out. They ran as a river in the dry places.

42For he remembered his holy word, and Abraham, his servant.

43He brought his people out with joy, his chosen with singing.

44He gave them the lands of the nations. They took the labor of the peoples in possession,

45that they might keep his statutes, and observe his laws. Praise Yah!

Summary

A historical praise psalm — recounts God's faithfulness from Abraham's covenant through Joseph in Egypt, the plagues, the Exodus, and the gift of the promised land; 'He remembered his holy promise to Abraham his servant.'

Authorship & Background

Author: Multiple authors — primarily David (73 psalms attributed), plus Asaph (12), Sons of Korah (11), Solomon (2), Moses (1), Heman (1), Ethan (1), and anonymous. The Psalter was compiled over approximately 1000 years and served as Israel's hymnal and prayer book. The book is divided into five 'books' (1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, 107-150), paralleling the five books of Moses. Key themes: worship, lament, praise, trust, kingship, creation, wisdom, Messianic prophecy, and the full range of human emotion brought before God.
Classification: Historical Psalm / Hymn of Praise Attributed Author: Anonymous (portions appear in 1 Chr 16:8-22, attributed to David for the ark's arrival in Jerusalem) Key Themes: God's faithfulness to His covenant, Israel's history as God's story, the Abrahamic covenant, Joseph's suffering and exaltation, the Exodus plagues, providence through history, remembering God's works
Historical Context: Psalm 105 is a sweeping narrative of Israel's history told as PRAISE — from Abraham's covenant through the Exodus to the Promised Land. It is paired with Psalm 106 (which tells the same history emphasizing Israel's failures). Together they show: God was faithful (105) even when Israel was not (106). Verses 1-15 appear in 1 Chronicles 16:8-22 as part of the song David composed when the ark was brought to Jerusalem. This psalm emphasizes God as the active agent throughout — HE remembered, HE sent, HE brought out. The purpose of Israel's rescue: "that they might observe his statutes" (v.45).
Structure:
  • Call to Praise and Remember (vv.1-6)
  • God's Covenant with Abraham (vv.7-11)
  • Protection of the Patriarchs (vv.12-15)
  • Joseph: Suffering to Exaltation (vv.16-22)
  • Israel in Egypt and the Plagues (vv.23-36)
  • The Exodus and Wilderness (vv.37-41)
  • The Promise Fulfilled (vv.42-45)

Map & Geography

  • Egypt (v.23, v.38): Land to the southwest; place of Israel's bondage and exodus.

Reflection

  • 1. Tell the story (vv.1-2). "Make known his deeds among the people." Faith is strengthened by rehearsing what God has done. Tell your children, tell your community, tell yourself — God has been faithful.
  • 2. Between promise and fulfillment is testing (v.19). Joseph had a dream from God — then spent years in a pit and a prison. The word of the LORD tested him. If you're in the gap between God's promise and its fulfillment, you're being refined.
  • 3. God sends people ahead (v.17). Before the famine came, God sent Joseph. Before you face your crisis, God has already positioned provision. Providence works ahead of time.
  • 4. The purpose of deliverance is obedience (v.45). God didn't rescue Israel just to be free. He rescued them "that they might observe his statutes." Freedom is not an end in itself — it is freedom FOR serving God.
  • 5. God remembers His promises (v.42). If you've been waiting a long time, remember: the time between Abraham's promise and the Exodus was 400+ years. God does not forget. His timeline is not yours, but His memory is perfect.
