1Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.

2Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?

3But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

4Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.

5They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:

6They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:

7They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

8They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.

9O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

10O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

11Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

12The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.

13He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.

14The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children.

15Ye are blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth.

16The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

17The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

18But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.

1Not unto us, O Jehovah, not unto us, But unto thy name give glory, For thy lovingkindness, and for thy truth`s sake.

2Wherefore should the nations say, Where is now their God?

3But our God is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever he pleased.

4Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men`s hands.

5They have mouths, but they speak not; Eyes have they, but they see not;

6They have ears, but they hear not; Noses have they, but they smell not;

7They have hands, but they handle not; Feet have they, but they walk not; Neither speak they through their throat.

8They that make them shall be like unto them; Yea, every one that trusteth in them.

9O Israel, trust thou in Jehovah: He is their help and their shield.

10O house of Aaron, trust ye in Jehovah: He is their help and their shield.

11Ye that fear Jehovah, trust in Jehovah: He is their help and their shield.

13He will bless them that fear Jehovah, Both small and great.

14Jehovah increase you more and more, You and your children.

15Blessed are ye of Jehovah, Who made heaven and earth.

16The heavens are the heavens of Jehovah; But the earth hath he given to the children of men.

17The dead praise not Jehovah, Neither any that go down into silence;

18But we will bless Jehovah From this time forth and for evermore. Praise ye Jehovah. Psalm 116

1Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name bring honor, for the sake of your loyal love and faithfulness.

2Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”

3Our God is in heaven. He does whatever he pleases.

4Their idols are made of silver and gold— they are man-made.

5They have mouths, but cannot speak; eyes, but cannot see;

6ears, but cannot hear; noses, but cannot smell;

7hands, but cannot touch; feet, but cannot walk. They cannot even clear their throats.

8Those who make them will end up like them, as will everyone who trusts in them.

9O Israel, trust in the Lord. He is their deliverer and protector.

10O family of Aaron, trust in the Lord. He is their deliverer and protector.

11You loyal followers of the Lord, trust in the Lord. He is their deliverer and protector.

12The Lord takes notice of us; he will bless— he will bless the family of Israel, he will bless the family of Aaron.

13He will bless his loyal followers, both young and old.

14May he increase your numbers, yours and your children’s.

15May you be blessed by the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth.

16The heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth he has given to mankind.

17The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any of those who descend into the silence of death.

18But we will praise the Lord now and forevermore. Praise the Lord!

1Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth’s sake.

2Why should the nations say, “Where is their God, now?”

3But our God is in the heavens. He does whatever he pleases.

4Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.

5They have mouths, but they don’t speak. They have eyes, but they don’t see.

6They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell.

7They have hands, but they don’t feel. They have feet, but they don’t walk, neither do they speak through their throat.

8Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.

9Israel, trust in Yahweh! He is their help and their shield.

10House of Aaron, trust in Yahweh! He is their help and their shield.

11You who fear Yahweh, trust in Yahweh! He is their help and their shield.

12Yahweh remembers us. He will bless us. He will bless the house of Israel. He will bless the house of Aaron.

13He will bless those who fear Yahweh, both small and great.

14May Yahweh increase you more and more, you and your children.

15Blessed are you by Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.

16The heavens are the heavens of Yahweh; but the earth has he given to the children of men.

17The dead don’t praise Yah, neither any who go down into silence;

18But we will bless Yah, from this time forward and forever more. Praise Yah!

Summary

A Hallel psalm — 'Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory'; the nations' idols are silver and gold, mouths that cannot speak; but Israel trusts the LORD who is their help and shield.

Authorship & Background

Author: Multiple authors — primarily David (73 psalms attributed), plus Asaph (12), Sons of Korah (11), Solomon (2), Moses (1), Heman (1), Ethan (1), and anonymous. The Psalter was compiled over approximately 1000 years and served as Israel's hymnal and prayer book. The book is divided into five 'books' (1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, 107-150), paralleling the five books of Moses. Key themes: worship, lament, praise, trust, kingship, creation, wisdom, Messianic prophecy, and the full range of human emotion brought before God.
Classification: Hallel Psalm / Hymn of Trust Attributed Author: Anonymous Key Themes: God's glory vs. human glory, the futility of idols, trusting in the living God, the nature of idolatry, God as help and shield, blessing from the Creator
Historical Context: Psalm 115 is part of the Egyptian Hallel (113-118) sung after the Passover meal — meaning Jesus sang these words on the night of His betrayal. The psalm addresses a situation where surrounding nations mock Israel's God ("Where is their God?" v.2). In response, the psalmist contrasts the living God of heaven with the dead idols of the nations. The satirical description of idols (vv.4-8) is one of Scripture's most pointed — they have every human feature but cannot use any of them. The devastating punchline: those who make them BECOME LIKE THEM (v.8). This psalm was likely sung antiphonally in worship, with different groups responding (Israel, house of Aaron, those who fear the LORD).
Structure:
  • Not to Us but to God's Name (vv.1-2)
  • Our God vs. Their Idols (vv.3-8)
  • Call to Trust (vv.9-11)
  • Assurance of Blessing (vv.12-15)
  • The Living Praise the Living God (vv.16-18)

Reflection

  • 1. "Not unto us" (v.1). Make this your daily prayer. Every success, every blessing, every accomplishment — not unto us, LORD. Redirect all glory to where it belongs.
  • 2. You become what you worship (v.8). This is terrifyingly true. If you worship money, you become calculating and cold. If you worship power, you become controlling. If you worship God, you become gracious, compassionate, and alive. Choose carefully.
  • 3. God does whatever He pleases (v.3). This is either the most terrifying or most comforting verse depending on whether you trust His character. Because He is good, His sovereignty is our comfort.
  • 4. Trust is the dividing line (vv.9-11). Three groups are called to trust: Israel, Aaron's house, those who fear the LORD. Trust is what separates the living God from dead idols — and those who truly live from those who merely exist.
  • 5. Praise belongs to the living (vv.17-18). Don't wait. The dead cannot praise. While you have breath, use it for blessing God.
