1Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.
2Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
3God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
4For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.
5They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.
6Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.
7Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
8As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.
9We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
10According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.
11Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.
12Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.
13Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.
14For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
1Great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised, In the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
2Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, Is mount Zion, [on] the sides of the north, The city of the great King.
3God hath made himself known in her palaces for a refuge.
4For, lo, the kings assembled themselves, They passed by together.
5They saw it, then were they amazed; They were dismayed, they hasted away.
6Trembling took hold of them there, Pain, as of a woman in travail.
7With the east wind Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish.
8As we have heard, so have we seen In the city of Jehovah of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah
9We have thought on thy lovingkindness, O God, In the midst of thy temple.
10As is thy name, O God, So is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: Thy right hand is full of righteousness.
11Let mount Zion be glad, Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of thy judgments.
12Walk about Zion, and go round about her; Number the towers thereof;
13Mark ye well her bulwarks; Consider her palaces: That ye may tell it to the generation following.
14For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide [even] unto death. Psalm 49 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
1A song, a psalm by the Korahites. The Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise in the city of our God, his holy hill.
2It is lofty and pleasing to look at, a source of joy to the whole earth. Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon; it is the city of the great king.
3God is in its fortresses; he reveals himself as its defender.
4For look, the kings assemble; they advance together.
5As soon as they see, they are shocked; they are terrified, they quickly retreat.
6Look at them shake uncontrollably, like a woman writhing in childbirth.
7With an east wind you shatter the large ships.
8We heard about God’s mighty deeds; now we have seen them, in the city of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, in the city of our God. God makes it permanently secure. (Selah)
9Within your temple we reflect on your loyal love, O God.
10The praise you receive as far away as the ends of the earth is worthy of your reputation, O God. You execute justice.
11Mount Zion rejoices; the towns of Judah are happy, because of your acts of judgment.
12Walk around Zion. Encircle it. Count its towers.
13Consider its defenses. Walk through its fortresses, so you can tell the next generation about it.
14For God, our God, is our defender forever. He guides us.
1Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised, in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
2Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King.
3God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge.
4For, behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together.
5They saw it, then they were amazed. They were dismayed. They hurried away.
6Trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail.
7With the east wind, you break the ships of Tarshish.
8As we have heard, so we have seen, in the city of Yahweh of Armies, in the city of our God. God will establish it forever. Selah.
9We have thought about your loving kindness, God, in the middle of your temple.
10As is your name, God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is full of righteousness.
11Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of your judgments.
12Walk about Zion, and go around her. Number its towers.
13Mark well her bulwarks. Consider her palaces, that you may tell it to the next generation.
14For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death.

Map & Geography
Reflection
- 1. God's presence transforms ordinary places into holy ground. Zion was geographically unremarkable — smaller than surrounding mountains, without a river. Yet God's presence made it "the joy of the whole earth." Where God dwells becomes beautiful. Our lives, homes, and churches become significant not by their impressiveness but by His inhabitation.
- 2. What we heard, we can also see. The psalmist celebrates the movement from secondhand faith to firsthand experience (v. 8). We begin with inherited testimony — what parents and teachers have told us. But God invites us to see for ourselves. Personal encounter confirms received truth.
- 3. Tell the next generation. Verses 12-13 command a deliberate tour of God's works — counting, marking, considering — for the express purpose of testimony to the next generation. Faith transmission is not automatic. It requires intentional narration of what God has done. We must point out the evidence.
- 4. God guides us through death, not merely to its edge. Whether we read "unto death" or "beyond death" (v. 14), the promise is extraordinary. God does not abandon His people at the final threshold. The guide who walked with us through life walks with us through the valley of the shadow and into eternity.
- 5. Enemies flee before God's presence. The kings who assembled against Zion saw and fled in panic (vv. 4-6). They did not overcome Zion's defenses — they never even engaged them. God's presence alone was sufficient to rout the enemy. Many of our spiritual battles are won the same way: not by our fighting but by God's manifest presence.
